- The Perfect Chipper Knife!! I made a short video on what knives work best for us in our Morbark chippers. We currently have a model 23 whole tree Chipper, two model 23 flail chippers, and model 2755 flail chipper. All these chippers have the same angle knives in them. With the proper angle and the proper sharpening technique you can make great chips! This is what works best for us!!
I used to work for Trelan and yes the paper companies are very fussy about chip size. Besides the knives another thing to watch to keep making quality chips is the condition and clearance of the anvil, it always amazed me how many customers would bring their chippers in complaining about ragged and over size chips , when we opened the hood a lot of times we would find the anvil would be worn so much it couldnt even be turned to a new coener
+Fred Hankes Yep! That anvil can make ya or break ya!!!
Thanks for the comment!!
A knife is always as sharp as the quality of the back grind. A slight angle on the back gives a perfect back edge, without grinding the whole backside.
I have a tiny sharpening business in northern ca. I mostly sharpen chipper knives right now. I have a patent on the way I sharpen them. I can sharpen them razor sharp, the exact same size as each other, and without heating them more than a high room temperature. Which means longer lasting. Im just a little one guy who works in the woods business. Jut thought id let you know.
It would be a great job if you share your experience other people to help beginners like me make their own small wood chippers
Do you sell chipper blades too? Lmk the name of your company, I have a small tree service and just got a chipper
I'm just starting with my chipper and do know some about sharpening and my gauge at 30 - 30.5 degrees and will check things out.,Want to build a flat grinder and look like a reason. Look like some good information here, thanks
My chipper is making a ton of strings. I have all new anvils in it set at .020 and running 30 degree blades. I’m making a good quality chip that is in spec but also making a lot of strings. You have any pointers. I cut southern pine. Thanks
great video. I love learning new things. How much farther back can you grind the knives than the one in the video ? I loved the birthday cake part, looks like you have a great family.
Commenting on an old video, I know, but still relevant, and thanks for it. Quick question, if you don't mind: So if I happen to need larger chips - as large as possible with this equipment - , it's a matter of using a worn anvil? or some sort of spacer (though I'm not sure it's doable) to distance the blade from the anvil? Thanks in advance
Hey there, if you still keep damaging your blades with holders etc use plastic or wooden containers instead. Thank you for the video :D
Is this use for hardwood too? I use the TCT for keruing kalimantan (very hard wood) and its broken.
What kind of steel are made
What the tool you use to measure the angle call. Thanks
Should take a lesson from woodworkers that use planes. On hand planes, if you use a secondary bevel on the front blade at 1 degree higher and a backbevel, you'll get a super sharp blade. The idea about the secondary bevel is that it saves a tremendous amount of time sharpening, the blade lasts longer and its sharper.
Prayers to Lacey , Great family Too !!
+mrbakerskatz Thanks!
Would this process work on a Vermeer 1600a?
Hi. I just found your channel few days ago and i like your videos. Those lead things on the knifes. What do they actually do?
Ravolta The knives get sharpened ever time they are dull...so they get shorter. The lead keeps them the same distance when you put them in the chipper disc. They stick out of the chipper disc 7/8 inch. Thanks for Watching
I like to go 28and a quarter degrees on mine,,, that 28 and a quarter,, turns out some of the crispiest chips and that angle last for long time...
That 1* makes a bit of a difference in surface area, it is a bit more gentler of a angle so it is more of a "scissor" action and less of a "chisel" action, should also reduce fuel consumption too.
those are badass knives.will the 29 degrees work on all chippers?
No all depends what angle the knife pocket has be machined to be. The grinding angle that being talked about here is a clearance angle. Example, The last sawmill chipper knifes i did was 31⁰.
The sawmill before that had 2 chippers. 1 was 30.5⁰ the other was 29⁰
Cheers
@@madtoddman very interesting thank you.my biggest chipper is 32hp PTO operted
Hi im running a drum chipper here in sweden and was wundering were you buy your knifes, the brand? Gonna resharpen some knifes and try that 29 degree angel :)
What is material of blade? Good video.
You said in your video that the knife can get banged up in the tray. Have you ever considered using an adhesive caulk and putting a piece of rubber or hardwood in the bottom of your tray? All of my expensive woodworking tools/bits are stored in wood cases and really makes a difference in keepin em sharp. Good info in your video.
How long do you change the chipper knife every time
do they make a carbide knife?
How hard are they on the Rockwell “C scale??
I believe its around 30ish. I can check Monday on the knives we got if you're still interested in knowing
Do you have your own Hanchett knife grinder? I own a sharpening shop in Traverse, and I grind a lot of those. THe logger never asked me to back grind them though. THat is interesting
Max hope all is well do are you looking to sell a hanchett?
@@morganwiliam5574 No. WHen I can get work for it, it is a great money maker
What does 28 do?
would the 29 degree angle work with any kind of chipper blade, big or small ?
+GmGarlo That's a good question. I'm not familiar with any other Chipper except for the three we run. They are all at the 29 degree angle. Sorry I'm not able to answer your question.
Thanks for Watching!!
Most chipper blades are about 30 degrees, so - yes. The golden rule is: High angle - long life / low angle - short life.
Then comes all the variables (blade strength, chipping rocks or cotton, bad adjustment and so on) :-)
The family starts with chisels at 25 degrees and goes all the way up to planer blades that are about 45 degrees.
Whats the Name of the steel?
Type of métal made from it cvp?
Whats the lead for?
+Mike Buffing Even knife is a different length. When you sharpen the knife it's get shorter...if you look at the lead it makes them the same length when you set them in the chipper disc.
Thanks for the comment!
ok just surprised its lead and not shimmed another way. the same method used to sharpen those knives is used when sharpening metal cutting tools allows them cut instead of chip off.
'in spec'....are they that particular? Why are they that particular about their wood chips?
+Keith Brettell The chips we produce are constantly checked. They check for sizes and bark content. They don't want them too small or too big. We are set up to make a 7/8 inch chip.
Thanks for asking!!
That Chipper Guy What are they used for that they're so particular?
nice info vid
+william hale Thanks William!!!!

+Luis Lucero Central Michigan
