    Informative video. Looking at both mkc models mentioned.
    Currently have a white river m1 with paracord handle. Use for skinng and butchering game and gutting fish. The paracord does gets messy but just undo the cord soak it warm water and soap for 15 minutes, let cord dry, rewarp knife.
    People say there are "better, cheaper alternatives" but have yet come across any company names.
    Mkc knives are "pay once, cry once". They seem they will last a lifetime, as long as you dont lose the knife 🤣

    Congrats on getting your hunting license! My friends and I do a mentor hunt every year to give people an opportunity to get into hunting. It’s always a little funny to see what knives guys bring, it’s usually either something like a brand new KaBar USMC fighting knife or a Swiss Army knife, so they get a crash course in hunting knives. The sweet spot for a one size fits most is a bird and trout knife for small-medium game, and a 3-5” drop point with thin geometry. You can go up to 7” for a big game skinner but the greenhorns aren’t going to take any game bigger than a white tail normally.

      It’s actually not too hard to clean the paracord. I used my Speedgoat on an elk hunt this year and it got covered in blood and hair. I just cleaned it with hot soapy water and it is fine now. No smell or anything remaining. And it’s easy to rewrap the handle if you feel the need. They have a video on RUclips showing you how. Or you can send it back and they will resharpen and rewrap it for you free of charge.

      True, that is why I use spyderco salt for these dirty tasks.

      I love the Stonewall skinner. Not quite a Nessmuk, but hints of that style, which is my preferred skinner blade shape since I use the hides and don't want to poke any holes. Only skinned one buck with it, but man it was nice not having to stop and touch up the blade half way through like my last skinner I tried.

I think I paid $325 for the Stonewall. And yes, it's worth it. Everyone keeps complaining about the price with zero perspective. Magnacut, top of the line sheaths, perfect heat treatment, and from a small business in the USA - We're not talking mass produced like ESEE or Tops (and Tops can get to those prices where you don't get what you pay for). Everyone just wants something for nothing because their short bus brains can't forest for the trees.

    Its a case of less is more. They realized there was a market for a really thin and slicey blade for field dressing that was also light weight. So, while people make comments that it doesnt seem worth the money, you are kind of right, until you go looking for an alternative knife that is 0.10 thick from magnacut and a couple of ounces. If the paracord or mirror shine are non starters for you, take a look at the Jackstone. Its been my go to field dresser. Only slightly thicker at 0.118, great shape G10, and washed finish. Thing is a laser beam. Yes, i hated that it was $300, but finds its way onto every hunt.

    G'day Aaron, what I like here is that there's a top notch stainless and a top notch carbon tool steel to choose from. Cant say I'm a fan of para wraped handles though, .... should you need the cordage you compromise the tool. I dont think there's anything wrong with the blade designs themselves, but cant really think of an application where they'd replace something I already have; fishing maybe, but then the parawrap will undoubtedly trap/soak up blood and other fluids.
    I'd suggest; if they're popular as is, ....... whack a proper set of scales on and see what happens ; )
    Cheers Duke.

    Hey Aaron, I need some help. I've employed those on Bladeforums with their opinion on this topic and they have offered some great options. These two blades look awesome and could be contenders but price is the main factor. So here's the dilemma. I'm looking for a dedicated food prep knife for the camp that is inexpensive ($55 or less), 4", flat ground drop point with wide belly, in stainless steel so I don't really have to maintain it, easy to clean and sharpen, compact enough to throw in my pack and preferably made in usa. I just realized that most of my fixed blades are 1095, 5160 and one thick Buck 650 Nighthawk in 425M and 420HC. I have gone through so many avenues looking for this blade! I have narrowed it down to the Kabar Snody Big Boss in S35VN, Kabar Forged Wrench knife in 425 (only 3" blade) or the Buck Selkirk. The Buck Selkirk would look to be the perfect blade for this in price but it's made in china and doesn't have the Bos heat treat. Are there any others you might think of with these parameters?

Rather than a personal attack, perhaps you could argue otherwise with actual facts or reasons why a string handle on a $200 knife is the best idea since sliced bread?
      What's this knife actually good for? A nice display knife should have a nice handle, and a working blade should have a practical one. It may be great steel, but the cord wrap makes no sense for use in the real world. As it is, it's just a fancy shank.
      If I was a collector, I probably would swoon over the steel, and end of story. I might not care about how practical the handle seems for actual use, because it would stay pristine. @@yellowdog762jb I was just speaking to your verbiage, I never said paracord was a good thing. It's meant as an EDC or for hikers who want to shed ounces, hence the no scales. That's the entire point. I hate skeletonized/wrapped handles anyway, it's too small, so I'd never use it. But guess what...it's paracord. You can unwrap it, wash it, and rewarp it. They even have a video showing how. I don't have to justify the knife, they do it on their own if you watch their videos. You're judging it's use and purpose and value out of ignorance and a short review from a RUclipsr. They don't advertise this as a hunting knife, it's just capable of it. They advertise this for hikers and EDC for those who want to shed weight and still have a fixed magnacut. It's a specific demographic. If you don't like paracord, they have other options with G10. So yes, I'll criticize you for speaking out of ignorance, thinking you know all about the knives, their purpose, etc. when you all you did was make incorrect assumptions.

    • @yellowdog762jb
      @yellowdog762jb 5 месяцев назад

      There's no reason to attack others with such vitriol for simply expressing an opinion that differs from yours. Paracord wrapped handles are less than optimal for a work knife in my opinion. They seem more reminiscent of one likely to be featured in a Ramdo movie. EDC means Every Day Carry, and that implies frequent use. And they are going to get grimy if used daily. For that price it is my opinion that they should have better handles. Better as in nicer looking, ergonomic, and/or easier to keep clean.
      "...when you (sic) all you did was make incorrect assumptions." You are the one that is making assumptions and judgements about others by calling them simple collectors and making judgements about their experience with knives. You also said someone else was acting like a child for not wanting to bother with disassembling the handle, washing it and rewrapping it. If you wish to do that, that's perfectly okay with me. That person chooses not to do so, and I agree with him. It's just an opinion. You are welcome to yours. But there's no reason to be so nasty to others who simply have a different opinion from you.
      As one who is concerned about the impact specific verbiage has on a topic when discussing its merits, perhaps you might reflect upon your own?
      Many people find that if they wish to rebut someone's statement, and possibly change that person's mind as well as that of others, that is it often advantageous to reframe from name calling and being nasty in general. Someone presented with a well-reasoned and nonjudgemental alternate opinion, or additional set of facts, might even reconsider their opinion instead of digging in their heels. I doubt that you would address a neighbor or coworker the way that you have done more than one person on this video. Everyone that is tempted to watch this video is sort of a "neighbor" in the knife world. They are also all going to have differing opinions on some topics, and on what makes one knife The Best for them. I'm sure that there are probably many things that you and I would agree on, this may not be one though.
      Putting aside our passion or apathy for paracord handles, I wish you a good day and the company of many likeminded companions.

      @@yellowdog762jb I wasn't passing judgment on opinions, I was passing judgment on stupidity. Different opinions are great if they're rational, logical, and well informed. The complaints here are born of ignorance or wanting to use a model for which it is not intended. I hate paracord handles, won't use one. Not liking them isn't why I commented. MKC openly advertises this not as a working knife or hunting knife. They have other models that are exactly what people want if they took 2 minutes to look at the company website instead of thinking a RUclips review gave them 100% full and accurate information, thus giving them an ignorant opinion. Just because it is capable of doing such tasks doesn't mean that's the demographic MKC is targeting and they say so on their website and in multiple videos. So yes, I have impulse control problems when people say stupid, ignorant shit.

    I love my Speedgoat in MagnaCut. It has become my go to EDC for hiking, backpacking, hunting and fishing. At only 3 oz. with the kydex sheath its ideal when ounces make pounds, and pounds make pain. I also really like the Whitetail. I feel like MKC knives are a bit overpriced but they are very high quality and are made in America by a great company that supports the Second Amendment and hunting rights. And they stand behind their products with their Generations warranty.

      I Keep hearing MKC is overpriced, but then you might as well apply that to every single magnacut fixed blade out there. They may be a few bucks more than many brands (and I've seen some more expensive), but MKC also comes with the best sheath compared to any other that I've come across and their heat treat is perfect. All things considered, the price is exactly what one would expect.

      Agreed, my paracord handled knives should be knife blanks that you bought for much cheaper and want to use without going through the trouble of making a proper handle. A good example of this is the Terava 85 puuko and Terava 80 Scrama. Two excellent carbon steel knives that can be bought without a handle and paracord added easily

      They are expensive no question. But I wouldn’t say they are overpriced. They sell out in minutes every time they do a drop so from a business perspective they are priced appropriately for their market which is mostly big game hunters. That being said, I would recommend getting their magnacut blades over the 52100. That way you are getting a premium super steel. Nothing wrong with 52100 but magnacut is a superior steel IMO.

    I had the magnacut speedgoat but sold it. The handle was too cramped. Did the same as a $15 Mora, which has a nice full handle. I do wish more knife companies would make thin stock with thin edges like MKC does though. This “survival knife” fad for every outdoor knife needs to end

  • @Swearengen1980

    I have the Stonewall Skinner and Blackfoot 2.0, both magnacut (Stonewall is my favorite), and my only criticize is they didn't come as sharp as I expected. A little stropping and it was perfect though. I won't buy their paracord handle because of my hands; getting old and arthritic sucks. I don't get the obsession over shaving 1 or 2 ounces, are we men are little girls? Everyone whines about the price, but anyone who has an MKC will tell you the sheath makes up a lot of that price from cheaper (and lesser quality) products. Best sheath I've received with any knife, hands down. I'm also more than willing to pay a few extra bucks to support an American small business. Not to mention the heat treat - watch some torture tests on MKC; it's impressive for such a thin blade. You get what you pay for with MKC.

    always enjoy your video and appreciate the time you put in making them for sure. I do like the design and blade of that stoned goat black one but I have never liked a knife that just has a wrapped paracord handle as I have always found them not to be vary comfortable in the hand.
    and for $225 they could have done micarta or nice wood handle in my opinion.
    For me I would take the Esee as I like that all around design and handle better but that is just me and like I say all the time what works for one person may not work for others.

    These are some great looking blades that really appeal to me but $225 is a stretch. Compared to some proven knives from Boker, Tops, Esee, and Joker of similar construction and size range, anything over $180 price point for them is just unexceptable for me.

    As others have said, I’m not a fan of the paracord wrap; I wish they would at least provide an option for g10. I can (and do) carry my own spare paracord, so it provides zero appeal to me personally.
    As a point of comparison with a similar price point and size/weight, I have benchmade’s saddle mountain skinner (s90v blade), and have used it on four successful hunts (2 elk, a deer, and a javalina). With the solid handle, it was a breeze to clean up. Also, the Benchmade has a little more robust blade geometry, which makes me a little more confident when potentially prying around bones/joints/etc., which sometimes is necessary. Overall, I believe it to be a better hunting knife than these, if we’re going to talk super expensive knives for hunting. 😊
    However, the sheath that came with the Benchmade is a total and complete POS. So the MKCs definitely have that as a plus.
    Seems to be a neat company, though. As a knife guy, I’ll definitely have to keep my eye on their offerings.

    • @gideonstactical

      Yes they seem to be working hard to pour into the hunting, knife, and USA manufacturing worlds. Agreed scales would be better!

    • @Swearengen1980
      @Swearengen1980 5 месяцев назад

      Critical thinking skills are dead in this society. The entire point of the paracord wrap (which I won't buy) is to shave off the weight of scales. Watch any single video from MKC and they repeat it over and over again. The selling point of these is that they're absurdly light while also being very sharp and remarkably tough for the blade thickness and weight. They have plenty of options in G10. The Blackfoot 2.0 is comparable size to the Speedgoat. The primary difference is the weight of the G10 scales.

    • @warrenruppart8567
      @warrenruppart8567 5 месяцев назад

      I’m aware of their arguments, I just don’t agree with them. I would like the option to trade weight for what to me is a better handle material. The extra ounce or so would be a welcome trade, especially with the blade shape on the stone goat (ie, I would love this knife for my uses and preferences if g10 or similar were an option).

    • @Swearengen1980
      @Swearengen1980 5 месяцев назад

      @@warrenruppart8567 You don't get to trade weight and keep any form of real handle material. I can't tell if you're obtuse or just brain dead, as you claim to understand what this is marketed towards while every other words says you have no clue. Scales weigh more than an ounce or so, plain and simple. The slightly smaller Blackfoot 2.0 with G10 scales weighs 3 or 4x the Speedgoat for example. The reality is, if you need under 2 oz instead of 6, you should probably man up or go to a gym, but that's beside the point. In any case, have you thought about actually looking at their website and seeing that they have very similar knives to what you want? The Stonewall skinner is a tad bigger, very similar blade shape, and has G10 scales - And yes you pay for it at $325. But if you'd taken 2 minutes to look instead of just whining on a review channel about just 1 of their models, you'd have known that they basically do offer what you want.

      @@Swearengen1980It’s a poorly thought-out package intended for hunting. Paracord is a fabric-based cordage that has an absorptive property. Hunting equals blood and bodily fluids on the knife, which equals a gross and non-sanitizable knife.
