The school district I teach in BANNED this book and I am appalled and disgusted. Thank you for your honesty and your message. I'm sad my students won't be able to experience this piece of literature.
I just finished the book today---and I stumbled upon this review and I was just nodding my head the whole time. you did a great job and communicating what this book signifies and what Toni Morrison was also trying to communicate!
"How do we exist in a world where we are being taught that beauty is not within us, it is outside of us..and that not only is it outside of us but it is something than what we are, and what we see" OMG. THE WAY YOU WORDED THAT! yes!!
I also thought that Pecola wanting blue eyes because that they are something that no other African American person in the community has, which would make her special/ unique (in a good way, her dark skin makes her stand out in a bad way) and everyone would be jealous of her instead of looking down on her.
I’m a few pages away from being done with this book. And honestly I’ve had to look up reviews just to see different perspectives on what the book meant to others. I really love your review because it makes me dissect what beauty has meant and means to me. The language in which Toni Morrison conveys the story was harder for me to understand at some points. So I had to do some re reading and even looking up a whole bunch of words that were used. The part where she talked about Peccola’s dad raping/ molesting her literally hit me right in my soul. That same thing has affected my family and it was too close to home. But even the concept of freedom and what that means was an aspect Toni described that had me questioning what freedom is for me currently and what it’s been. Thank you for this review, I needed and appreciate this. This will be a book I’ll re read in my lifetime for sure.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing your perspective Queen! I understand that literature can serve as pathway to healing for so many, and this book is a part of that journey for me! All of Toni Morrison’s books do that for me. 🙌🏽 I can definitely resonate with breaking down Morrison’s writing. It’s not always so clear, which is what makes it so special. How we let “beauty” be prioritized over humanity is a crazy trip of a revelation. Thank you again for sharing your experience. Continue to use books as a tool for healing. Books saved my life. Lots of love!
Sarahn Says “how we let “beauty” be prioritized over “humanity” is a crazy trip of a revelation.” Quoting that in my journal because that’s so real! And your response definitely inspires me to read more. I’m going to check out more of Mrs. Morrison’s book also. Thank you by the way Queen.
First, I LOVE your energy! Second, I'm really glad I watched your review of this incredible book. It's interesting how many times you mentioned the word "powerful". That word came to mind over and over as I was reading this story. I've never read Toni Morrison before - really? Can you believe it? I've obviously missed out on something special, but no more - I'm now a true fan and hope to read all her work eventually. Interestingly, when I saw her photo on the back of the book, my first thought was "What a beautiful woman!". The fact that this book is so often banned speaks to how powerful Toni Morrison's writing truly is!
Your review was so thorough and exactly what I felt after reading the novel! I liked your commentary about the power we put into societies’ perception about beauty. especially on black women.
I found this review just right after finishing the book. All I can say is thank you for creating this amazing review. It is a hard reading because of the feelings that forces you to experience.
I am searching for African American books and I was just looking at this book on the thrift book store site . Thank you for this review ! I’m going to purchase it now .
I felt a lot of things reading this book that I admit I didn't fully understand without the context of personal experiences. I was in awe, nonetheless, of the poetry and beautiful language she used to describe extreme suffering. Thank you for shedding light on this. What an incredible book.
Yes! I completely agree. I think this book was ahead of its time. and Morrison is just a knockout as a writer. I think the mixture of language and content is so moving and unique. I'm glad I read this book, I love reading all her books and cant wait to read and review more. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I heard about that! The internet will make many things accessible to many people. Out schools no longer dictate what is knowledge and what people have access to.
Hey there, hope you are doing well and being safe, and bless. I'm doing a essay on this book. I can use your help 🙏. Do you think that you can do that, if it is possible.?
Being beautiful can also be detrimental, it can take you down as men can see you just as a sex object, it's rough out there... I get all races coming for me,only Allah has helped me to retain self worth self love, l was born with great beauty...but is does have its down side.. Sorry

I love your review and especially your effective, direct language. But Toni Morrison won a Nobel prize for Literature, not for Peace
