I suggest their first hit song, Light My Fire. It spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (in July 29, August 5 and August 12, 1967). The Doors were invited to sing this hit on the Ed Sullivan show, the top variety TV show of its day. Jim Morrison was advised to change the lyrics (girl we couldn't get much higher). The Doors management agreed because an appearance on Ed Sullivan was a game changer especially for a new band like the Doors. (The Beatles first American appearance was on Ed Sullivan). When The Doors performed Light My Fire on LIVE TV, Morrison leaned into the camera and sang, Girl We Couldn't get much higher. As a result, The Doors were banned from the Ed Sullivan show. It didn't hurt their career.
Morrison was a rebel and lived a hard life. Their concerts were crazy. I suggest the studio version of Light My Fire and avoid the AM radio hit, which was shortened by eliminating delicious instrumental sections that appear on the album, (longer) version.

The show's producer came to their dressing room after the performance and told them they'd appear on the Ed Sullivan Show again. Jim replied, "Man, we've already done the Sullivan Show."

@@bob_._. Google search: 50 Years Ago The Doors Get Banned From The Ed Sullivan Show
The infamous banning occurred after a producer from the show asked the band to change a lyric in “Light My Fire” 'Girl we couldn't get much higher' to something else. After all, this is a family show and you can't say “higher” on television.Sep 17, 2017

While I agree for a new listener "Light My Fire" is a good listen to it's so overplayed. It's like suggesting to someone who has never heard Led Zeppelin to listen to "Stairway to Heaven". Nothing wrong with either song but both bands had greater songs once you start to delve deep into their music. I personally wouldn't put "Light My Fire" in my top 30 greatest Doors songs.

    • @bob_._.

@@markastoforoff7838 How is a song "overplayed" to someone who has never heard it? And although a deep dive may turn up subjectively better music, Sal's trying to pull an audience here and realistically more people are going to click to see him react to something they already know than something they'd also be hearing for the first time. The more people who wonder how the hell this guy hasn't heard this popular song yet, the better on this platform; deep dives and other niche stuff are for patreon.

No one got more from the Hammond B3 than Ray. There's a local (Houston) psychedelic band that also squeezed every drop from the B3. FEVER TREE. If you play the first 2 tracks from their self-titled first album straight through (as one song), it demonstrates their unique style. Headphones are definitely recommended. Great song! The Doors were among the most controversial & influential rock acts of the 60's, mostly due to Jim Morrison's lyrics & voice. They had a lot of great songs such as "Love Me Two Times", "Roadhouse Blues", "The End", "Break On Through (To The Other Side)", "People Are Strange", "Light My Fire", "L.A. Woman", "Hello, I Love You", "Touch Me", "The Unknown Soldier", "Love Her Madly". Sadly Jim Morrison died in 1971 at the age of only 27 but left a great legacy of music.

A great choice and it's one of best bands and songs from the 60s and being speechless is understandable. This is what you get when you combine 3 uber talented musicians and an avant garde poet. The hypnotic melodic rhythm and bass define the era’s psychedelic sound that you get lost in. It still hasn't aged in all these years and feels fresh.

@@jimralston7562 .... the greatness of morrison lyrics when they were good (as here) is it sets up simultaneous layered meaning wh/ dovetails into a larger theme.... on one level, the lyrics you referenced are a literal dark tale of a dangerous drifter roaming outside the city in the desert, who is merciless & violent. a predator who will take life to get what it needs both for craven reasons & for property theft. this beast roams outside the safety of a city as law abiding family inhabitants drive by.... yet, on another level the hitcher is a metaphor. wh/ in turn scales the meaning up to the collective & the culture itself. in that context, the road becomes Time. the car, the culture's station in the present moving thru time. the hitcher, evil temptation of choice. the storm, cultural unrest & strife (kent state, nam, riots, heroin plague etc during time of this song). the choice: to either pick up & indulge the hitcher or drive on beyond it & weather thru the storm. culture's fork in the road in '70 & cylically like a storm reoccurring again in times of strife like now. jim as he left to go to paris gives his good bye to the culture he loved in this poem and song. a warning, but also an option of hope. its prophetic. b/c by '72-'75, in many ways the nation lost its way & some fell apart (as shown by the character Jenny in forest gump book/movie). they in a sense picked up the hitcher. while others, endured, healed, steered away from the hitcher, weathered the storm and found love & built families.... in that context, its a masterpiece & was spot on re the fork in the road the culture was in at that time. & like a storm, its cyclical & could be applied to the present time. thats the power of well written, large arc theme poetry. quite a good bye gift from morrison.

Lol, Salvo is such an enigma to me…
On the one hand, he’s one of the most appreciative, sensitive and attuned reaction channels to the lyrics and mood and overall depth of a song, yet it seems like he was literally born yesterday. Not only has he never heard any of the songs, not even their most famous, but knows absolutely nothing about Jim Morrison or “The Doors” movie or so many huge cultural references (just recently first heard the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive”!). This goes with most of the other huge bands, artists, and super groups as well.
I wonder if he came out of an experimental program where they had a baby underground and saw how he could live without contact with the outside world for 30 years. 🤔

This is over 55 years old! Sounds great! When they came out in 1967, I was not sure their music would stand the test of time, but it definitely has.

The best of the best of the Doors:
Break on through (to the other side).
    Light my fire.
    When the music's over.
    Hello, I love you.
    Roadhouse blues.
    LA Woman.
    Riders on the storm.
    Love her madly.
    The end.

My fave Doors song, & one of my all-time faves - period. Many yrs. ago, a hurricane struck our region, where they are extremely rare. At the height of the storm, our local Classic Rock radio station rolled out this song. Perfect! Thanks for your reaction.

Great reaction! The whole "L.A. Woman" album, by the way, is just as great as the track you listened to. It's a total banger, well worth taking in to get the entire brilliant Doors experience.

I was a small child when the Doors came out, so I kind of missed this until I was much older. But I fell totally into this band. Jim Morrison is a God amongst men; as far as writing goes. I'm a huge fan for many years. I'm glad you likewise this song. I hope you drive into more soon

I suggest listening to this song on stereo if you can and no headphones, with lights down low, with your favorite beverage in hand. Raises the enjoyment of listening to the Doors and this song to a whole new level.

It's a wonderful dreamy song... Now you definitely have to listen to 'L.A. Woman', a whole different side of Jim Morrison's vocal skills (and killer bluesy keyboard)

LA Woman has got to come next. Or Light My Fire. And When the Musics Over is, I don't know, like pure Doors. Like the Doorsest song they made. Great reaction. More classic rock please. It's classic for good reasons.

That whispering at the end, like Jim Morrison snuck into the studio after several whiskeys and hooked up the mic and just started a "soft parade," if you will, of the chorus. Eerie, poetic, and JIM!
