@@jamestheobald535 My younger brother had on too. Anyone that believes the 335hp rating for the Super Cobra Jet is living in another world. That is probably one of the most underrated engines in that era. I wonder if it had anything to do with keeping insurance costs down. Anyway, my first Mach One was a 69 390 4sp in Acapulco Blue. I could beat most SS 396 Chevelles but never raced a 396 Camaro. My second one was identical to this one except it was red. It was the pace car at the old Fairgrounds Speedway in Salt Lake City. Super Cobra Jet 4:30 gears with the C-6. It passed everything but a gas station. Man, I wish I had that car back.
I've seen a 428CJ dyno at 406. A 428SCJ actually doesn't have any more power. They use the same intake, heads, carbs, exhaust, etc. If anything, an SCJ should make a tiny bit less HP because it used heavier rods but they were built to withstand more punishment. They also came with an oil cooler and being more rare, they are worth more.
I put a 428 out of a K.C. 1966 Ford Police car in my 68 Ford Ranger. From its performance with a C-6 and 3:50 gears , I always guessed it to be around 500 H.P. I could ease it up to 35 or 40 in first , then open the 4v as I shifted to 2nd gear and set the truck sideways on good pavement.
Yeah insurance reasons were why it was rated at a paltry 335. More like 425. Same reason the boss cars were rated so low. Boss 302 was 290 when it really put out 385 in a small block.Boss 429 was rated at 375 when it was dyno'd at 500+.
I like both these cars. The Mustang is better looking in my opinion. I worked on a General Motors Assembly line for fourteen years. "I LIKE ANYTHING MADE IN THE GOOD OLD USA!"
I had to chuckle when I saw this video. As a teen In the mid '70s I had a '69 SS 396 (L78) Camaro, it was even the same color as the one in the video, while one of my best friends had a '69 Mach 1 428 CJ, red with a shaker hood. Both were 4 speeds with a Hurst T, but otherwise the CJ was stock. My SS had a full cam, headers, 4.11 posi, and a load of other hot rod goodies. I came from a Chevy family, he was a Ford fanatic, and we had friends in the Mopar tribe and even one with a '69 AMX 390. Although we all used to rag on each other, in reality we all appreciated sweet examples of Detroit iron no matter who made it even if we didn't always want to admit it. Due to their different DNA, my SS and his CJ had different personalities aside from the way they were modded (or not). My SS was wound much tighter than his CJ due to its hot rod goodies and gearing, which was good and bad. Being built for the 1/4 mile, it was quicker off the line than that stock CJ, but it likely had less top end and was more temperamental and thus harder to live with on a day to day basis. That lumpy cammed rat motor sure sounded sweet, though. The 396 had much more room to work under the hood than the 428 'Stang due to the difference in shock tower placement. Under hood maintenance such as changing plugs, which had to be done far more frequently in those days, was laughably easier on my SS than his CJ. We sometimes swapped cars on cruise night, and being almost completely stock and not as tightly wound his CJ was better behaved and ran cooler than my SS. Heat was always an issue with higher compression and more radical cam, and was much harder to manage with the equipment we had available back then. In fact, on hot summer nights on the strip I'd make just an occasional pass in the SS then park it and watch the parade go by. Being stock, his CJ wasn't so affected. I preferred the seating position in my Camaro over the Mustang, where the driver sat lower in the car. I'm 6'2", but it was still more challenging to see over the dash and long nose of that Mustang especially with the shaker. Visibility to the rear wasn't great in either, but the Mustang's roof line, rear window slant (with slats), and lower seating position created bigger blind spots. The more upright interior of the Camaro vs the swoopier Mustang made the interior feel lighter, roomier, and easier to get in and out of the front and especially back seats. In general, they each have/had pros and cons and the SS is definitely my sentimental favorite, but I'd take either one of them in a heartbeat.
Sure thing... I'd take the Mustang! The history, the style, the sound. An icon of America, an icon to the world...a passion to New Zealand, " F.A.A.F" Ford Awesome, Awesome Ford!
I really appreciate how level headed this channel is, it's so refreshing to see a car channel that isn't obviously biased towards one manufacturer and crowns them the king every time
When I came home from Vietnam, I had basically saved all of my pay, plus some poker winnings. I drove the Camaro 396 first and then the Mustang...drove away with the Mustang and it was an easy choice. I regret that I did not hold on to the Mustang, but hey, I did trade it for a Corvette after a couple of years.
That ill fitting trunk spoiler on the camaro looks so shotty. They always reminded me of a teenagers car who had went to a junkyard and yanked one off any random car knowing it wouldn't fit and bolted it on just to make it look cool.
I feel the opposite. the mustang has like 4 lines that make up the car shape and texture, while the camaro has better curves and stance. just my opinion though.
Mustang. My dad had the exact same car when I was a kid. A blue 69 mustang mach 1 with the 428 Cobra Jet. I loved him taking me to school in it in the early 80s. It would've been nice if he kept it for me.
Back in the day I had 67 Camaro 350ci/4spd with 4:10 gears. The car ran better than average, outran a friend in his 396/375hp Chevy II. No problem with the Fords I raced until going home one night I got behind a Mustang. My plan was to jump him in first & second and then just push him home in third. When I saw his car squat I nailed it, broke even in first, hit second and he started pulling some, third hell he was pulling away. It was a "WHAT" moment for me. Saw him at the hangout the next week and he gave me a nod. Felt better when he cranked it, built 428...
Julie, bought the car from a guy that had ordered it. Had a fold down rear seat and a fan rear window defroster. Loved that car. If you were in Atlanta I would want a ride. I would be lying if I didn't say I'm a bit jealous, ok a lot . Enjoy your 68!
I like that the blooper was left in. Funny thing is that even though he pointed the way he did I still understood him. - and I’d go with the Mustang this time.
Mustang Mach 1 hands down! The Camaro styling was old and stubby by then and the Mach 1 was sleek and beautiful and the best interior for decades! The numbers don't lie either what America thought because 80k Mach 1 sold and almost half of them with 428 power. 300 some 4 speed 396 Camaros with 375 hp. The Mach 1 was 400 hp+ with a minor tune. Just like the GM and Mopar big blocks.
Nice! 2 greats ... but on this one i'd take the Mustang . I always preferred Trans Am's to Camaro's on the GM side but out of the Camaro and Mustang in this video i'd go with the Mustang ,love that Camaro SS though . Nothing wrong with that Camaro whatsoever . But i'll take that 69 Mustang Mach with the Cobra Jet . Great video of 2 great rides.
69 Mach 1 all the way I currently have a 2007 gt mustang that I have mods done to it, it’s the closest look of a 69 out there and I had a 69 fastback years ago but not a Mach just a standard 302 3 speed manual car but was fun to drive. Wish I still had it

They are both fantastic cars however since I see many more 69 Camaros on the road and rarely see a 69 Mustang I can't help but think that the Camaro was much more popular. It was when I started driving in 1975.
Same thing by me. At the car shows it's rare for me to see the mustang but I always end up seeing a couple camaros. 428-SCJ Mustangs set records in NHRA SS that took a long time to break. They ran a 40# steel flywheel like mine used to have and speed-shifted them...10's w/ small tires.
428 SCJ just the engine alone is some serious $$$. Mustang all the way. I owned a 71 Mach 1 351 Stroker Cleveland 4v heads 13:28 on street tires, easily 12’s with traction. It became a garage queen for 10 years then I sold it.

When I was in my early teens there was a couple 69 camaros in the neighborhood, loved them and want one someday. But then I saw a 69 mach 1 and the Camaro wasn't even a thought. Bought my 69 mach 1 and 20 after 2 years of looking
The Laugh at the end says it all... "We're not making the call!" I'm a Ford guy, but we ALL have nothing but respect for the 396, and it probably was the better performance potential between the two. The Mustang's 428 probably felt a bit better off the line due to some more torque, but it probably comes down to who could shift better... I love both cars.
Both very beautiful and very fast..... But as a Ford man I'll take the 428 CJ Mach 1. But don't get me wrong... I love both the first and second gen Camaro's... particularly a 69 ZL1 Camaro or a 67 or 70 1/2 Z28. Both the Chevy 302 and LT1 350 were absolute screamers for small block V8s. Really I love all muscle cars regardless of the manufacturer. Dodge, Plymouth, Ford, Mercury, Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile....Hell even American Motors built some bad ass machines in the late 60s and early 70s
The 396 and the 428 weren’t comparable. If you wanted to make things even compare the 350 Chevy with a 351Ford. Or a 427 Chevy with the 428 Ford. The 396 would have been equal to the 390 Ford, the engine everyone forgets about.
Just checked the September 2020 Pure Stock Drags a 69 Camaro SS396 with the 375hp rating and 4.10 gears did the 1/4 mile 12:42 @ 111.84 the 69 Mustang 428 SCJ with 4.10 gears did it in 12:85 @ 107.92 both were automatic cars. Both amazingly fast!
Mustang fan all the way . You can never beat the original car that started it all If there were no mustang, there would be no Camaro to compete with it
Always a Chevy Guy but love the 69'-70' Mustangs and the SCJ Engine. So have to go Stang on this one. And they had way more than 335 Hp. More like 375 Hp at least. I would add the rear spoiler, louvers, and Magnum 500 rims though.
both nice cars my first time i was in a big block muscle car was a 70 mach 1 mustang 428 talk about pushed back in the seat wow nice to see them both thanks for the show
Love them both. Wish the Camaro had better exhaust tips however. I was just a college kid in 1984 and stopped at a gas station in Cleveland since there was a 1969 SS 396 4 speed convertible for sale in Marina blue. A group of bearded tough guys in the gas station told me it was more money than I had, and I asked how much and they gave me a crazy high number that floored me... $6,000, Wish I could go back in time.
Back in 69 I would have slaved for years to get a Mach 1 Cobra Jet! Never happened and I gravitated to the Camaro SS 2 years ago. Still love the look of both. 69 and 70 saw some of the beautiful muscle cars ever!
I bought my first car in 1979 when I was 16 years old from our neighbor and it was a 1969 Mach I 428 Cobra Jet just like the one in the video but it was white with the red trim.i bought it for $900 and it was a beast. I got married two years later and had to sell it because I couldnt pay for the gas and upkeep and take care of a family. I still have it in the back of my mind to try and find one to buy one day but that is probably a pipe dream. Nothing but good memories.
The RS package really improves the '69 Camaro look. Owned a '69 Camaro RS Convertible 350 4spd as my 2nd car, a '69 Camaro SS 350 4spd coupe at the same time....my first car was a '65 Mustang Convertible A code 289 4spd. Loved all those cars. Never got into bashing one make over another. Love the '69 Mustang sport roof....one of the best looking cars ever. Whats not to like here?! Saw an SS 396 '69 Camaro, same color as the one in the video, came with the molded front bumber in body color...very rare option, had the sport wheels too....looked much better than the rather plain one in the video.
Love that 69 Mustang Mach 1 !...... For my taste, the 1969 Fastback was the best looking Mustang ever built!

You never heard of a ZL1? Race car engine rated at 430hp... Actully put down 550+. Ran a 13.1 in 69 with the same tech as these two car had.
@arborcidal maniac lol. In your dreams. I owned 2 390GT Fairlanes and couldn't even beat a 350 Chevy much less a big block.
Mustang fan. That is my dream car.
An icon of America, an icon to the world...a passion to New Zealand,
" F.A.A.F"
Ford Awesome, Awesome Ford!
Mustang for me. Driving my 8th one now....:)
Thank you for your service. Both cars are badass honestly, why not have a Corvette, Camaro, and Mustang lol
Only thing bette than a mustang and a camaro is a corvette..
Jesus H Medrano not really only looks but not lights
Terry Bruce respect for your services
Why did you downgrade to a Corvette?
With those aluminum head and intake options, it's the Camaro all day.
Next to the Mustang the Camaro looks a little bland, make mine the Mach 1 especially with the 428 CJ.
gary cotham it may look bland until you pop the hood and watch it kick the mustangs ass on the drag strip
@@bigdaddyvince182 its still ugly
That ill fitting trunk spoiler on the camaro looks so shotty. They always reminded me of a teenagers car who had went to a junkyard and yanked one off any random car knowing it wouldn't fit and bolted it on just to make it look cool.
I feel the opposite. the mustang has like 4 lines that make up the car shape and texture, while the camaro has better curves and stance. just my opinion though.
Both are great cars, but to me it's always been Mustang.
I'm more of a Charger fan. But out of these two? Definitely the mustang.
Charger is like a giant turd compare to these two lol !!!!
Since there's not a RA IV Pontiac in the voting, I'd take the Mach 1.
Felt better when he cranked it, built 428...
steve thomas I had the exact same Camaro! I still have a 68 SS Camaro.
Julie, bought the car from a guy that had ordered it. Had a fold down rear seat and a fan rear window defroster. Loved that car. If you were in Atlanta I would want a ride. I would be lying if I didn't say I'm a bit jealous, ok a lot . Enjoy your 68!
@@stevethomas760 I've had a couple 67th in a 68 myself and never heard of a rear window defroster. Must be some kind of special order!
@@chevychase3103 I think you could get a electric like current cars. It gave me some incredible memories.
@@stevethomas760 , no it was just a blower, they didn't have the electric grid yet.
Mustang, the originator...camaro, the imitator. Big block FE power...greatest satisfaction known to man...
Seeing both in original trim and builds is a treat. Both or these are awesome and have a special place in every car enthusiasts heart.
Out of the 281,000 Camaros produced in 1969, over 300,000 are Z28’s.
I bleed blue so the 428scj mustang for sure
Mustang; really wanted a '69 Mach 1 when I got my license in 1976, but couldn't afford one then, and it's always been one of my favorites.
Both fine examples, but my money goes to the SCJ!
69 Mach 1 all the way I currently have a 2007 gt mustang that I have mods done to it, it’s the closest look of a 69 out there and I had a 69 fastback years ago but not a Mach just a standard 302 3 speed manual car but was fun to drive. Wish I still had it
Happily I had a 1969 Dodge Charger RT with a 440 six pack. But if I had to choose on of these 2, it would be the Mach One easy.
I would take a 69 Camaro ZL1 its faster then the mustang or the dodge, and I know the 440 very well and it has nothing on the L88 427
@@boostjunkie2320
Father had a 68 charger - put him in a wheelchair as a quad...
Uncle was killed in a bass ass 66 Nova big block out of his 1970 RS/SS camero.
Had a 428 scj in my 1970 f 100 -
But for my money the 400 with 440 crank in a 1970 challenger.
Is a bad ass ride in my day of the late 70's...
1969 Camaro is an automotive icon.
Sales prove the Mustang was far better liked than the Camaro. The are boring vehicles as well. They never had the looks of the Mustang.
@@mustardstain504d6 You're right, and the 67&68 Camaros were better looking then the 69...
Bought a '69 Mach 1, burgundy with the gold trim in 1969. I was a damn fool for trading it in for a Triumph in 1975.
Because of this alone I'm thinking about redoing the 69 mach 1 sitting at the shop instead of the 69 maro. I've owned 3 maros and now a procharged ws6 so guess I'm more of a gm guy so this would be a big switch for me haha
Camaros are like arseholes. Everyone has one, most stink.
428-SCJ Mustangs set records in NHRA SS that took a long time to break. They ran a 40# steel flywheel like mine used to have and speed-shifted them...10's w/ small tires.
After owning four Camaros and one Mustang i’m going to have to say the Camaro but I still think the Mustang is sweet too.
428 SCJ just the engine alone is some serious $$$. Mustang all the way. I owned a 71 Mach 1 351 Stroker Cleveland 4v heads 13:28 on street tires, easily 12’s with traction. It became a garage queen for 10 years then I sold it.
Mustang baby all day long
Mustang please. The Camaro’s a close second though.
Mustang all the way but always appreciate classic muscle from any make!
i was a stock clerk at a supermarket wen i bought my 69 mach1 exactly like that one interior an exterior at the age of 16yrs old. cant wait to find another one. sweet days ago
When I was in my early teens there was a couple 69 camaros in the neighborhood, loved them and want one someday. But then I saw a 69 mach 1 and the Camaro wasn't even a thought. Bought my 69 mach 1 and 20 after 2 years of looking
Wow, that Camaro SS 396 in Marina Blue is beautiful!!!
Camaro! I have had about 20 classic cars in my lifetime and I still have a 68 SS big block Camaro...4 speed manual trans. I LOVE IT.
Both are great cars. I had a black & gold 1973 Mach 1 351-C (2 bbl). It was not as powerful as the cars from 1970, and earlier, but was fun to drive.
Awesome video! Would love to see more of these comparison videos. Definitely a Mustang fan. Love that 69!
The 396 and the 428 weren’t comparable. If you wanted to make things even compare the 350 Chevy with a 351Ford. Or a 427 Chevy with the 428 Ford. The 396 would have been equal to the 390 Ford, the engine everyone forgets about.
Love them both. Have to go with the tough as nails looks of the Mustang.
Easy choice. Mustang.
The time has come to say WE LOVE THEM ALL. Don`t forget Mopar and A.M.C. too. ANYTHING from that era is choice these days.
Definitely the Mustang Mach 1. My uncle had a 1969 mach 1 428scj he said it was more like 435 horsepower.
FE powered Mustang for me all day long.
I loved the 69 Mach 1 I had! A rust colored beauty! It was fast and yet comfortable to drive. Why did I trade it...
Mustang has more style. Camaro is like a bulldog.
PJAvenger actually i compare this camero to the 70s comet
Mustang fan all the way . You can never beat the original car that started it all
If there were no mustang, there would be no Camaro to compete with it
I'll give you pointers for the Mustang creating the pony car genre, but the Camaro perfected it.
UB3R_M4X1MU5 yeah but the mustang didn’t look cool till the Camaro came out.
The 65 and 66 mustang looked very girly
Both are absolute icons. No 1 person should have to make a choice. Find 1 or the other. You hit solid CAR gold....
Always a Chevy Guy but love the 69'-70' Mustangs and the SCJ Engine. So have to go Stang on this one. And they had way more than 335 Hp. More like 375 Hp at least. I would add the rear spoiler, louvers, and Magnum 500 rims though.
Also video says SCJ and He says it has the lower rated plain CJ? Big difference in These two engines as the SCJ has the Drag Pac.
My Dad owned that Mustang in Candy Apple Red in 1969 with 4 speed Hurst. I actually love both cars and was a Corvette guy for years. Great video!
nice ss but i own 2004 compition orange mach 1 so my answer is the 69 cj all day
My dream car is a 69 mustang.
I believe its well accepted that the 428 cobra jet made about 415-420 hp and the 396/L89 was good for 405-410 hp but was lighter motor. Thanks.
Agreed, even the ford factory cj intake was cast iron,
The 396 is lighter due to the aluminum intake and heads but a typical 396 is heavier than a 428 CJ.
Once again, the 428 in stock trime is 355-360HP at the flywheel.
both nice cars my first time i was in a big block muscle car was a 70 mach 1 mustang 428 talk about pushed back in the seat wow nice to see them both thanks for the show
Both are vary nice but I’ll have to go with the mustang gorgeous car!
Mustang all day every day
I'm a GM guy but given the choice it's the Mach1. Same today. I prefer the Mustang having been in both.
Mustang for sure but in 69 both were badass
Back in 69 I would have slaved for years to get a Mach 1 Cobra Jet! Never happened and I gravitated to the Camaro SS 2 years ago. Still love the look of both. 69 and 70 saw some of the beautiful muscle cars ever!
My first car was a 66 Mustang. I really like the 69 fastback and the Mach 1 option is fantastic. But I can also give credit to the Camero
Just can't spell!!!
Mustang fan hands down
I would have loved either one and still would. I turned 16 in 1969 and drooled over both of these cars.
I really enjoy all of your Muscle car vids ! Great Cars . I’ll take the Mustang lol!
I will take the Mustang
Both beautiful bad ass classics can’t go wrong with both, but I’m a stang fan
Ha! trick question: both are kick-ass!!
i'm Mustang fan but that SS is cool too. and now , i love both
