    Hard to believe that from my early 20s in the late 80s to now in my mid 50s, they have sold me the same movie over 10 times on different formats and versions over the last 30 years, so maybe i better make a note in my will at some point to leave some money for future versions of this movie, 8k, 16k, 32k, 3dvr, direct brain version. This movie is an example of the fact that the universe is a vast place with many stories to tell. Audiences at the time, were perplexed as to why it wasn't what they were used to. I saw it as a theatrical release and loved the technical stuff and the soundtrack but thought it was too "odd" at the time. Now I see it as part of the uniqueness of storytelling.

      This was the first movie I saw in 1980. My mother got home from Bingo on the evening of December 31st, 1979, I was ready and hopped into the car. we drove to the theater, got our tickets, went in and sat down. I'd say the auditorium was about half full. At midnight we all screamed, "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!". The curtain parted, the lights fell and we probably got a couple of trailers before the movie started. When it was over I was like, "meh...". It was okay. Just a bit convoluted. Now I watch a new version whenever it's available and I like it a bit more each time. With these new effects shots (Vulcan is GREATLY improved!!!) I think I'll like it quite a bit more.

    Wow, wow, and just WOW. At 45, I grew up on TOS reruns on WZTV 17 from Nashville. I still, to this day, recall the pride and joy of getting this on DVD, which was a HUGE upgrade to my VHS copy. And as good as the UHD box set version of this looked, this is a fabulous, spectacular upgrade. I've never seen the refit Enterprise model look more realistic! The contrast and blacks look sooooo much better on this. Day One Purchase (TM) for sure! Thank you for this!

    At 3:40 on the right side, the Director's Cut added TOS shuttles sitting on the newly added area. Robert Wise had added them because he felt that Starfleet would not have completely replaced everything from the TOS era in less than ten years. Plus it was a cool easter egg.

    I like how at 7:19 in the comparison video they switched the deflector dish color from blue to yellow/orange. The rule was supposed to be yellow/orange at impulse and blue at warp. This was just calling for continuity errors that occurred throughout the movie. In the following movies, they just left it blue at all times, which was easier to manage.

      Really it's not that bloody complicated when you have storyboards and people who's sole job is continuity. It's no more of an issue than things like unbuttoned uniforms, injuries like scratches and dirt and such. One would think the director would tell the special effects team what the ship is doing.

    I saw the new Directors Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture once it came out on Paramount Plus + this morning and the movie has never looked or sounded any better than it does here. Also the shots of the enterprise leaving drydock so much more clear than in the Theatrical Edition. Also the sound in Dolby Atmos amazing in 5.1. Can't wait for this to come out on physical media on 4K UHD Blu-Ray Disc this September !!! Since it came out on Paramount Plus + I've been hearing a lot of great things about this new 2022 remaster of Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Directors Edition but the other 50 percent I've been hear a lot of mix comments on youtube and on social media things like the coloring does not look right , too much grain was removed , it has fake grain , the HDR is not right , stuff does not look right etc. You do realize this is the same team that worked on the 2001 Directors Edition right? I heard these same sort of complaints when the Star Trek Original 4 Movie Collection 4K UHD Blu-Ray Disc / Blu-Ray Box Set came out last year of the 1st 4 TOS films some fans are just never happy these days my goodness. Nothing is going to be perfect different remasters are going to look differently than what fans reemember when they 1st saw this film in 1979.

      IF you have a subscription to Paramount+ you may be able to watch it in Denmark. You need a VPN (Virtual Private Network) that you can set to whatever country you want it register your current location as. So get it, set it to show you are in the U.S., and you should be able to watch whatever Paramount+ has in the U.S. which is not available in your homeland. Is it the VPN? There are so many techs floating around I don't use so I'm not one hundred percent sure that a VPN is the proper service. I think it is though. Please research for yourself, don't take my word for it.

    Still my favorite TOS film. Criminally underrated. Overall, the new 4K release is beautiful, and I just saw it 4 times again in the theater! However, there are places where I don't think the new 4K release did the film any favors.
    Some dialog could have been restored without interrupting the flow or run time excessively - and some of it seems kind of important to the plot: "My god, over 82 AUs in diameter!"; "Viewer off!" [repeated]; "And there are no finer navigators in Starfleet, Commander."; "Mr. Sulu, please take Lt. Ilia in hand." through "I'm sworn to celibacy, Mr. Sulu. That makes me as safe as any human female."; "I know the Captain meant no personal insult." and "I would never take advantage of a sexually immature species. You can assure him that's true, can't you?"; "Maintaining warp point eight; I show our new heading as 287 point three Mark 105. Lieutenant Ilia...?" and "Confirmed, Mr. Sulu. Confirmed."; "Get out of here, Bones." and "As ship's doctor, I am now discussing the subject of command fitness."; "The new screens held!"; "It could hold a crew of tens of thousands!" and "Or a crew of a thousand, ten miles tall."; "...I don't want him stopped, Bones; I want him to lead me to whatever's out there." "And if that 'whatever' has taken over his mind?" "Then he'll have still led me to it, won't he?"; The whole scene that goes "Why have two carbon units entered V'ger?" "They want to make contact with V'ger." "Does V'ger object to the presence of the two carbon units?" "The carbon units are of no consequence; V'ger will determine their purpose." "Their purpose is to survive." "That is also V'ger's purpose." "You said V'ger's purpose was to find and join with the Creator." "That is how V'ger will survive."
    Visually, one part of the new 4K version was really inferior to the 2013 Bluray: In the lounge where Kirk invites Spock to "Sit down!", the trio's faces against the new added effects outside the windows are distorted and madly masked. I think the previous FX were just fine if the new ones required sacrificing the characters.

    Thank you. I'm very interested to see how the scenes taken from the SLV look and sound now. Someone spotted that on the DE, where Spock goes outside, the neck of the Enterprise is partially transparent in the background for a second. Barely noticeable but I wonder if it was the same in the TC.

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6
      @KRAFTWERK2K6 2 года назад +1

      It depends on HOW the VFX scenes were remastered. If they had the original 70mm elements still available and put them together digitally, it might look better. Otherwise they may have used the optically layered print of the VFX scene that we saw in the TC. I suppose this time around they might have invested more work into the optical effects remastering and rendering the new digital effects at 4K. We can see a wonderful change that makes sense at 4:14 with a minor perspective adjustment of Kirk and Scotty looking out of the transport pod. These are the kind of adjustments i like because it's subtle but it makes sense and would have been like that if they had a little more time in the postproduction during the making of the movie.

      It's all about Money! The more releases of the same movie & nutjobs like me who keep buying the "better" version, the more money in their pocket. lol Both of these are 4K Blu ray, but the P+ version has had many of the visual effects totally redone over just the upscale 4K upscale version. Meaning they went over every single frame of the movie to remaster it. Also P+ streaming of the 4K movie is still compressed over the 4K disc. Plus you need a mid to higher tier 4K Blu ray player & proper TV to take full advantage of the uncompressed discs visuals.

    I thought the new effects and restoration was hit or miss. Kirks tram arriving at starfleet looked way better in the original. There was that janky scene in the observation lounge with kirk, Spock and McCoy where they added the windows and warp nacelles but it totally distorted McCoys face. I miss the original klaxon they used and the original intruder alert voice. 7 out of 10 for me as an update and restoration. I wonder if they ran out of time for the first contact day release. Hopefully they can go back and fix some of the scenes before they commit it to 4k blu ray.
    I first watched TMP as a kid in the early 80s and last watched it when the directors cut was released on DVD. As an adult I definitely appreciate TMP much more. And this cut actually pushes it to the top 5 amongst all star trek movies.

    The Director's Edition was a quantum improvement over the first 4K transfer. There was so much more that needed to be done than just a simple re-grading. It needed just what it mostly got with the DE: to be taken apart and put back together again, just like George Lucas did with the "Star Wars" Special Editions, just without all of the annoying add-ins :)
    Now if only Paramount Plus would consider doing that with the other five Classic "Trek" movies, especially "Star Trek V"; watching Birds of Prey with hairy matte lines makes me angry.

    The new version really is the finished product we should have seen back in '79 but for the fact that the Paramount theatres were pushing Paramount to get the movie out to theatres for the Christmas rush. Consequently, as we all now know, the whole editing process, ADR Foley, colour grading and negative cleaning was done in a fraction of the time such things normally take to meet the exhibitor's deadline. Robert Wise was very unhappy with what was initially released, as was Gene Roddenberry but the theatres had the threat of a huge lawsuit against Paramount if the movie was not delivered on time...hence film cans were being shipped straight to theatres with some prints still wet from the developing baths!
    This is now the definitive version of the film Wise always intended it to be with all the cuts made more coherent, use of recently discovered voice sound loops which, because of time, were not used in the original release and so on. The newly mastered effects have gotten rid of the poor colour grading of the original, the grain and those terrible tearing mattes (especially in the last minute of the travel pod scene). Gone also is the reflection of the filming armature of the travel pod as it backs into the Enterprise.
    All in all this is just a wonderful release and I am so happy about it. Yes, kids will still think it is slow compared to their bang, bang smash-em films passing as SciFi these days but many may just twig to the fact that this is true Science Fiction which posits some very important quesitons about the future of humanity and what it means to be a human being looking for meaning in this universe...hence that final legend at the end of the film, "The Human Adventure is just beginning." Superb...just superb!

    Yes, best looking overall version - no doubt, with increased visible resolution (perhaps just be better encoding, or actual 4K instead of 2K upscaled) and DV, higher DR, resolved color grading, recreated some all-effect composite shots, but not all live action and effects combination shots leaving aliasing and rear-projection and the bridge depopulation SNAFUs. Film noise is controlled where easily possible, and noticeably scene stealing where it's not addressed. Why go so far restoring but not finish the job fully? This is NOT fully restored yet. Still, what's on display, even just streaming service (at peaks of 2.5Mbps by my monitoring), it's an incredible achievement. It's hard to imagine how good the discs will look like at 60Mbps.

    Wow, they really cleaned this up. Looks like it's digitally reconstructed with AI upscaled and the visual noise has been considerably cleaned up. Lighting has been altered. I would even say that they took the original image of some pieces and replaced parts of it using the original image as a template. Skin tone has also been modified. The added detail is exquisite.

    • @theemrpoint123
      @theemrpoint123 2 года назад +1

      As far as I know, AI upscaling was not used in this restoration. They did however reconstruct some of the original visual effects by re-compositing them, hence no matte lines. And of course, they altered or completely replaced some shots with new CGI.

    • @ByungSuk
      @ByungSuk 2 года назад

      @@theemrpoint123 well I can definitely see a lot of it was repurposed and recomposited. The colors just pop and seem to have more detail. A definite vast improvement from the 2001 Director's Cut. However some of my complaints from the 2001 Director's cut again made it to the latest version. First off, Jerry Goldsmith created the score for the original 1979 film that covers the entire film and the Director's Edition cut some of the scenes short like the Klingon Battle, going through the Cloud, and the V'ger fly over. When they shorten the scenes they also shortened Jerry Goldsmith's score and it IS very noticeable almost like a scratch in the vinyl. Also annoying is still they shortened the cloud power field from 82 A.U.s to 2 A.U.s. Overall a good attempt and vast improvement from the earlier 2001 Director's Cut, but I still prefer the theatrical 4k edition for having the true 'un-cut" version.

It is more the color grading and contrast adjustments that make the difference. I have my is Ultra set to 4k 60hz without hdr for the best results. If it was hdr that made the difference you would only see the improvement when streaming in full 4k HDR.

    The rotoscoping in the scene between Kirk, Spock and Bones just before reaching V'ger is dire and should not have passed quality control. Looks like a student did it. The new titles in the directors edition are probably intended to give it an element of class but the gold shine effect and the "shimmer in" effect just makes it look like cheesy. I actually miss the original bold white titles.
    Otherwise the 4k directors edition was a worthwhile watch.
    I really wish they'd fix the rotoscoping on that scene though or just put back the original in its place before it hits theatres.

    • @jfleming2203
      @jfleming2203 2 года назад

      There's also a number of other issues with this release - look at the CGI shuttlecraft launching in the background of Starfleet HQ when Kirk is talking with Sonak... on the DVD release this looked fine... but with the 4K release at the end of the shot the shuttle model just hands there in mid-air for about 4 frames which is jarring when you watch it. That's just poor keyframe animation - plain and simple. The final shot of V'ger just before it explodes - the blacks look way too black - it looks like a still image placed in the centre and it detracts from an otherwise great FX sequence, which is a shame as some of the other work in this release (especially the colour balance and audio mix) is great. The only other thing I could live without is the really cheap and cheesy rotation of the Enterprise as it flies to the end of the V'ger ship just before Kirk orders "hold relative position here". The original FX shot was better IMHO. Thankfully the issues are so minor its easily corrected for personal home viewing by taking the next the directors cut has to offer and merging it with original shots that were better left untouched.

    I'm not sure that it would be worth getting this over the current 4k edition. I don't have Paramount plus, nor a Blu-ray, so this is just an opinion based on the images show.
    For the most part, it's not worse, with some colour changes looking better. There's an extra sharpness in some shots shown, but I almost feel that it lacks a sense of atmosphere. Like you are just watching someone on a set, rather than someone on a ship, that's maybe got a few plasma leaks here and they're, colouring the atmosphere a little. Also, I'm not sure changing ships in the earth transport hub is a good idea. I feel, it's best to leave those things alone. Tidy then up, clean and colour correct but I'm not, personally, a fan of changing things like that. Which leads me to V'geer.
    I grew up with not knowing what it looked like, it was mysterious and massive and huge. It has swallowed planets and solar systems. It's so enormous that, it was almost in comprehensible.
    Now, I know that technology has progressed and maybe if they had what we have now it may have been different but I believe, that like in the best Horror, what your imagination makes up, for what's not seen is best. So showing an actual ship, however accurate it probably is, is not for me. It spoils it a little, it takes the mystery out of it.
    I think I'll stick with the DVD version i have, or maybe get a LD instead, now that would be cool.

I don’t like new effects in old films as I view movies as time capsules to what kind of effects were possible at the time (although for this movie great care was taken to make the effects seem like they were from the 70s).
