- How to tell which mushrooms are safe to eat and which mushrooms are poisonous. I did not talk much about the death cap mushroom in this video, but one thing that I should have mentioned is that it is white in appearance and brown underneath, making it harder to tell apart from common field mushrooms.
From what I understand the death cap mushroom has a much rounder dome at the top and a smoother appearance but it is the location in which it grows, predominately under trees that is the reason that I will never eat a mushroom that is growing under a tree.
I love bbq mushrooms. Mushrooms soup, mushroom gravy, butter sautéed mushrooms, skewered mushrooms, stir fry with mushrooms, pizza with mushrooms.
God I love mushrooms. An old Italian once told me that they are the earths meat and I will never forget.
Thanks Rob! We get those nice mushrooms here in Mildura too, you gave me confidence to go shroom picking myself.
Hey buddy thanks so much mate. I lo e them too. Good luck on your shrooming adventure buddy.
Great video, love the sentiment, but I fear there are some ideas here that are just myths. When a mushroom grows near trees it means its mycorrhizal, it formed a bond with the tree and they live in symbiosis, this by itself tells you very little about how edible a mushroom is, rather it helps identify the specific species, as they all have particular growth habits. The color of a mushroom is also not a good indicator of a quality mushroom to eat, there are thought to be millions of different species of mushrooms and the vast majority aren't known to be safe or not. Firstly you should find a type of mushroom you'd like to eat that you're aware grows in your area of hunting, then find out the taxonomy and morphology of that particular species (basically the way it grows and what it looks like and how it smells specifically) then study that specific mushroom's look alikes and find all their distinguishing characteristics. Otherwise you may just find a very toxic mushroom that fits these qualities and end up poisoned. There is a giant amount of information that grows daily available about mushrooms in your area, study hard and pick wisely.
He was providing the simple and safe way to choose the mushrooms he knows of. 🤦
@@Will-nb8qkpeople are absolutely ridiculous on here sometimes
Mind yourself Robbie you have played with poisonous snakes and killer spiders we dont want you killed by an omelette or a stake and chips dinner. Pick very carefully. Stay safe my friend. Very intresting video. Very enjoyable.
Hahaha thanks so much Vincent. Death by Omelette. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You have to be careful of "Yellow stainers" too Robbie. They are just like the field mushroom, but they stain yellow when you rub them with your finger nail. They won't kill you, but if you eat them they can make you sick and give you the runs.
Great vid Robbie! im a massive fan of mushrooms also!
I would just add if you are looking at what you think are field mushrooms but not sure just give them a scratch, if they go yellow leave them alone, white gills are another good sign they are no good.
As well as field mushrooms im a big fan of the pine ( saffron milk cap) slippery jacks, (got some sautéing ATM) and chiodini, (by far the best tasting of all but harder to find.) Sautéing them in garlic, olive oil and fresh parsley is also in my opinion a better way to get the best flavour out of them.
Keep up the good work!
They look delicious! Andrew Fishman had a great video last year showing the major differences between deathcaps and field mushrooms. I'll play it safe and stick to the ones at the supermarket though I think haha
Hahaha best thing to do if you're not sure. I will have to check out his video.
Hey Robbie! Good video mate. I forage mushrooms in my local area too. We only eat the huge white ones in the paddocks. They grown up to 30 cm high. Really nice crumbed 👍
Robbie mate the cold weather with autumn rain is what turns them on
I reckon so mate, u til it gets too cold. Once we start getting frosts we stop getting field mushies.
Think I'll do a mushroom hunt in my paddock tomorrow morning I love my mushrooms this made me hungry for them cheers mate
haha Thanks heaps mate. I had a ripper for tea tonight with my steak and veges. Absolutely beautiful.
@@robbiefishing beautiful you didn't get out the Pandora oven to cook it in its the weather for it now
The underside of the mushroom somehow makes my skin crawl, it’s so uncomfortable, I can’t explain 😩
What i find interesting is that when i searched up differences between poisonous and safe mushrooms, it seems that all the people are either British, English, or Australian in the videos.
Aussie Aussie Aussie. 👍
Thanks for the info never to touch any mushrooms that grows on or near trees
Deadly poisonous Amanitas are easy to identify, so are deadly galerinas. Most good edible mushrooms grow in the woods or directly on wood. It's very easy to spot amanitas and simply avoid them. There are tons of different agaricus mushrooms that grow in fields, they can be very tricky to identify. This video actually contains pretty bad mushroom hunting advice and perpetuates the general public's mushroom phobia.
Thanks for the knowledge mate. Good to see your out and about. Keepsafe love you videos.
Thank you so much Elliott.
I think the orange mushrooms at 4:55 are called hen of the woods. If I'm right, they're edible
They are definitely not chicken of the woods mushrooms. Maybe a gymnopilus or something.
Great work Robbie very informative! Next time show us which magic mushrooms to pick hahaha
Hahaha to be honest mate I'm not sure if we get death caps on my area. No doubt we do get a few dodgy ones. LOL
Thanks for great mushy tips. I was coming home this morning from a run and encountered mushrooms growing in a small nature-strip. No trees around. Looked like a mushroom and smelt like a mushroom. When I trimmed the stem, though, the inside had a yellowish tinge. My wife said not to eat them, so I didn't. Store-bought ones don't have this yellow tinge. What do you reckon?
I know this is 6 months later, and I am very new to mushroom hunting, but there are species of field mushroom known as yellow stainers. As far as I've seen they stain quite a bright yellow instead of just the slight tinge, but better safe than sorry. Although not to everyone, they can have negative effects (stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, sweating and diarrhoea).
you may know what to look for but a strong knowledge of what you are looking for is the number 1 rule
I used to photo and pick mushrooms up in Sweden. I mostly picked the chanterelle types but like you said keep away from those on wood. Although some fungi is deadly a lot of inedible ones just taste disgusting. However you should never eat any unless 100% sure you know what it is.
Thanks mate. A great rule to live by.
Yumm mushrooms we used to get them when we were kids haven’t got them in years though good instructions we only ever looked for brown underneath
Thanks Cam. They really do taste amazing dont they. Hard to beat a feed of fresh mushies!!
there aren’t many mushrooms around here but i still enjoyed this video, thanks robbie:)
Hi mate thanks so much for watching.
The 3rd ones on the tree remind me of chicken of the woods mushroom, yet it'd best to let it grow into a matured monster sized one to be edible
Please be careful Robbie. Even experts with mushrooms have been caught out in the past with poisonous mushies
Yes I actually read that yesterday. That's how hard they can be to tell apart.
@@robbiefishing can you still buy the grow your own mushroom kits ? Disease and pest free and definately safe to eat. Be nothing fresher than growing you own
@@mrdilligaf1968yes.
It is a nobrainer -even if you go to the supermarket the mushrooms there are brown underneath. I never touch anything that is white or yellow underneath.
Haha me either mate.ast night on the news they were talking about deathcap mushrooms. They said they're almost identical to normal mushrooms, and then went on to say they're white underneath. LOL 😂
Hi Robbie have you found mushrooms growing in a "Fairy Circle"? We have several times, thought it was an old wives tail but it is true. Also, I was taught that if you can peel the shin on the hood right from the edge to the centre of the hood and not have the skin continually breaking in small pieces, you a mushroom not a toad. We have also picked mushrooms too big and tough to eat(dinner plate size), just left them for the cattle and goats.
Enjoy but continue to be careful!
Thanks mate. Can't say I remember ever seeing a fairy circle.
Your vid is quite apropos! The bloke that is camping at our place atm, is a retired samaritan builder. He went for a walk yesterday, he picked a big bunch of brown mushrooms, on the side of the road. He brought a tub to us. I took 1 look and said, 'NO good!'
Dad pulls his,' I'm older than you card, been picking mushrooms since I was a kid in the 40s blah blah!'
I still said, 'These are still no good! I can tell by the shape of them!' The looked LIKE Swiss Brown/Field mushrooms, but have a more dome shaped cap, thinner stem, and sun burnt easily. But the BIGGEST kicker, was the SMELL! These false brown/field mushrooms REEK of IODINE! Dad still wasn't convinced as they did NOT stain yellow, (as some of the others do!) But he peeled 1, and left it to oxidise for a few mins! THEN he smelt it! He also tried cooking 1 piece, & the whole kitchen stunk of iodine! I told our guest to chuck them immediately, & he did!
These 1s often grow in big CLUMPS! I saw some at a local park on Sat. Knew they were crap straight away!
As to growing under trees, there are many EDIBLE species that grow under trees! I often used to get BIG horse/champignons under river red gums, and slippery jacks under pines. Orange chantarelles also! Used to pick morels around central Vic as well, that look like an upside down pine cone on a stick!
But your guide lines are sound! Also under the fauna/flora guarantee act, you aren't supposed to pick wild mushrooms from public land! (Private land obviously, doesn't count!)
Spor on mate. Many good mushies under trees..... if you know what you're doing. And I don't. LOL 1🍄🍄🍄
@@robbiefishing Wow! 3 months??? Record! LOL!
Agaricus species can be difficult spore print microscopic images is often needed to ID the orange ones on the tree were gymnopolus sp. But your rules and a lot of experience is definitely needed for wild mushrooms 🍄 im no mycologist niether but used to pick bucket loads of these in the barossa and some of the biggest were dinner plate size
Nice Video Robbie, we were also taught as kids if you scratch the top of the Bell and it turns yellow it is poisonous. Ferrets, yabbies and mushy’s fun days...
Absolutely mate. Death cap mushies have a yellow top when rubbed. I read that in my research for this video.
The ones that bleed blue are good to lol
haha yeah they're the only ones I know how to recognize
Same lol theyre probably the only ones i can 100% identify haha
People eat mushrooms under trees here in the u.s all the time. Chicken of the woods, chanterelles etc.
They do here too, but I don't know which ones are which. All mushrooms are edible, some of them only once. LOL
I like the way you say brown. Good video
Awsum as always mate! I have found maggots in the steams of some mushrooms over last couple years! Mainly in older looking ones.. anyone else seen that? Yeowwwww
Ewww yuk! As yucky as that sounds, I wonder if they're actually dangerous? I wouldn't want to be the one to find out. LOL I have never noticed it mate.
They don’t look too offensive and are only in the steam, added protein! But worth checking for! Either way, can’t beat em! Enjoy
Yep. I find maggots n bugs in the vanes too often in wild mushrooms
@@robbiefishing it’s common actually in field mushrooms, they get worms and insect lava in the stems, my granny use to take me mushrooming and we use to pick ones under the trees but she grew up in the hard times after ww2 so they use to pick mushrooms just for food to eat so she knew what she was looking for, she would always say (it may be different for other area’s) if it’s a young mushroom and it’s pink underneath and you can easily peel the skin off it’s safe, if it’s white underneath and you can peel the skin off it’s probably safe but don’t take the risk and if it’s yellow or orange don’t touch it, and in my local area anything with brown gills is good.
Mushrooming can be good fun but local knowledge is the real key
I don’t think they are maggots I think they have a specific name but I can’t remember it
check out pine mushrooms, very distinct orange colour (and yes they only grow in pine forests)
Thanks Dave. I've seen other people eating them, but I wouldn't have the confidence. LOL
What about Pine Mushrooms and Slippery Jacks Robbie you can find them in the pine forrests and they are great to eat
Hey buddy i have no doubt but I'm not game enough to eat them. LoL There's only 2 different types of mushies I will eat. Field mushies and supermarket mushies. LOL
Only eaten the ones that do go out of cow poo. Will try others following the rulz of course
Probably a much safer option than eating the ones that grow out of tree roots I reckon.
I like the ones that turn blue on the inside
Nice video..Be careful.
You and I have both been in good paddocks Robbie! I love a feed of fresh mushies.
Haha thanks Kevin. They sure are bloody beautiful mate.
Nice video Robbie about mushrooms I was ignoring that there's some good eating mushrooms out there. As Italian I would love some risotto mushrooms especially if fresh 😜😁👍💪💪Ciao ciao Robbie
Only about 3 mins in brother, But you are missing out on some good tucka, Ignore what you think about trees, and being an aussie ( also almost all over the world ) there are 3 mushies you can pick with no mushroom that has same features that are poisonous and good in oz, Saffron milk cap, orange mushie and orange underneath, slippery jack, brown on top yellow honeycomb sorta looking underneath, touch the top if its slimy or slippery its a jack, none look the same ( look at pictures first and description and none are similar that are poisonous ) the other is porcini and again hard to mistake. All grom in australia and all over. Good luck picking brother and stay safe
Mushrooms have tons of tiny little roots called mycelium in in scientists have called it a network because of it looks kind of like a network also the underground
Great video mate
Thanks so much mate
a few years ago i grew mushrooms from a box set of mushroom compost, it was rubbish only got a couple so threw the compost under a bush id just planted, now I've get loads of what look like shop mushrooms growing there, would you eat them?
WOW, I wonder if they're the same as the shop ones? I wouldn't wat them to be on the safe side. It might just be a coincidence that they're growing there.
@@robbiefishing yeah weird i'd thrown it there ,i haven't eaten them, they are have brown gills , they look the part, smell right , its a lilac bush not a tree , tree ,might buy some to compare
Don't quote me if you die, but I heard that if you can peel them, they are a mushroom. Heard this from a so-called expert on TV. I would stick with the brown gills and familiar smell. If the gills look a bit pale, keep them for a while to see if they turn more brown. I'm still alive, that's how I can tell you this.
Great video 👍 nothing better than fresh field mushrooms 👌
Thanks John, that's what I reckon mate. Absolutely beautiful.
The White dapperling mushroom is edible & it has white gills, not all of the brown gilled mushrooms are edible.
If you scratch the top of the mushroom & it goes pink then it's edible,if it goes yellow then it's poisonous !
I love how this guy goes on about what a mushroom is and is not and apparently the only thing that is a mushroom is a field mushroom 😄 They are all still mushrooms buddy.
I never said they weren't. Ij just said that I wouldn't eat them. I never said they weren't mushrooms. LOL
i love the way you say fungi
Hey Rosie I love your vids you inspire me so much to get outdoors and have a fish throw a yabby net in and just enjoy the country that we have, can you please give me a shout out awesome vids cheers, Brock👍 I'm 12 years old
Thanks so much champ. I would love to give you a shoutout but I get asked every day by so many people, so I only give shoutouts to my Patreon followers and my close friends sorry mate.
If I say yes to one then everybody that I have said no to will get upset.
They start more pinkish than end up brown
Yes, very true mate.
Love those aussie accents!!
Psilocybe cubensis are even better
LOL mate I just googled them. Pass.
Hey Robbie, why did the mushroom go to the party? Because he was a fun guy (fungi)
Hahahaha love it.
Mushrooms are so much cheaper than 40 years ago in the shop - not worth messin' with , just buy 'em.
Plus , do you have yellow stainging mushrooms up your way - heaps in Melbourne , they grow on most nature strips when the weather is correct.
They give you sore tummy if you eat them - but they look and smell just like mushrooms.
Hey Mohammed I am not sure sorry. We might. I onky even eat the ones growing in paddocks and have never had any issues. Everything else is good for photography only. LOL
The river behind you Robbie looks fishy have you fished there and what fish are in there
Hey Sam, its a beautiful spot. I've caught a lot of cod down there.
I think there are poisonous field mushrooms also.
I'm a mushroom at work.
Kept in the dark and fed shit?
@@robbiefishing you said it wrong - It's bullshit
Can mushrooms grow in skin in the wonder land?
Why no pick under trees?
I just seem to see lots of different ones under trees and don't know which ones are good and which ones aren't.
Hi robbie this is awsome thanks
Thanks for commenting on my video
Hey buddy its my pleasure. Thanks for watching my vids. 👍👍
robbiefishing thanks for uploading
Try with garlic and butter in the middle of them on the bbq mate.
Yummo, I will definitely have to do that mate. Thanks for the tip.
Ever done magic mushrooms?
Hahaha no. Not for me. I'm crazy enough without them. LOL

We got shit loads out in the orchard mate. Lovely.
here the fun fact: orange mushroom that growing on the dead tree or alive are edible but has no taste

Are you sure? Looks like Jack O Lantern to me
Yummeh! Watch OUT for 'Operation Portabello!'
Bravo.
Psilocybe cubensis 🤤
Robbie's mushrooming adventure's! I like it 😁
But oyster type mushrooms grow on trees, and tree bases? Only ones told on ground around trees and bases//roots ect.. are also oyster and morels, but others no. Even if look like yellow or brown oaks they are evil twin lol. Oyster mushrooms most don't have evil twin lol
The last of us gave me hella anxiety of mushrooms
I escaped mormonism, and you can too
LOL I am not a Mormon mate.
We're my mushrooms
the good mushroom grow in poop haha
Just stay away from the magic mushrooms
Haha great advice mate.
If you scrape the mushroom and it turns a yellowish hue, it is a poisonous mushroom...if it turns blue you just scored!
Tip ….take a little mirror with you and look under the cap , kicking and pulling every mushroom out of the ground just ruins them producing in the future , you said there wasn’t many around. , even more reason to leave them alone and not destroy them , great advice on not taking what you don’t know is edible and if your in doubt leave it alone as well , responsible foraging take what we need and not take every thing or they can’t not reproduce anymore , the older ones release there spore so we foragers can come back again and enjoy in the future , gets annoying seeing people just bust them up for no reason and wonder why there is none next time they go out.
Hi mate, great advice. I must remember that, thank you.
To be honest, I actually thought that breaking them up like that released the spores and helped them reproduce.
@@robbiefishing it may help as long as we don’t bolder over to many that might not be ready to help generate , magical world fungi , magic mushrooms lol as time goes on they are learning the health properties mushrooms have and are helping people with all sorts issues , the more you look into mushrooms and species environments etc the more you will realise what we didn’t know , quite fascinating , you already got the bug mate , always love watching your videos , keep them coming bud .👍
Me: Ahh what about the ones that grow in shht Robbie? 👀
Rob: It doesn't Matter if they are near it.
Me: I think you're diverting the question Rob 😑🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha I would probably still eat them. With my cooking, I wouldn't notice the difference. Haha
What about chanterelle?
I don't know her sorry.
💀💀 chanterelle is a mushroom💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Everyone be careful with picking any mushroom that has not yet opened, certain dangerous amanita species will look exactly the same.. I personally don’t think this video is a good representation of safe picking and suggest anyone who is going to pick and eat their own harvest do there own research on the particular mushroom you are looking for. Not just a “field mushroom”. Happy hunting’s 😊
I love the blue meanies 😵😵😵😵
LOL I don't even know what they are. I will habe to google them.
@@robbiefishing type of magic mushrooms. Was being silly 😂😂
@@robbiefishing, did you hear about the mushroom that was the life of the party?
He was a fungi.
On a more serious note. A mate and l once collected several buckets of beautiful looking mushrooms from an otherwise bare paddock. However once we started cooking them they turned a bright yellow. After a little research, they are actually are called yellow stainers, and do contain a poison that can be activated by heat. Please take care, and don't eat the yellow stainers.
