We the audience are learning 2 things with your 'gun lock' series. First, the manufacturers of gun locks focus more on the securing method than the actual lock they employ. They spend countless hours (no doubt) designing a system to incapacitate a firearm, but then just get the cheapest lock they can find to secure that system. The result is a gun lock with obvious shortcomings.
The second thing we are learning is you have a nice collection of guns. Probably a understanding wife too.

Thanks... as for the understanding of my wife, she grew up overseas in a war-torn region and has witnessed the atrocities that can result from a disarmed population. As such, she is quite supportive of my "other hobby." If there was any "understanding" required with this particular gun, it was with respect to the amount of time I put into it. After getting the proper approval and paying the applicable tax, I built it in my basement out of de-militarized parts and a homemade receiver. Building an AK (well) is quite time-consuming.

I think the red pins around the trigger DO have metal inside them, it's just that there's plastic over the tips so you can't see them. Try sawing one in half to see for sure.

    • @lockpickinglawyer

      I checked them with magnets.

    • @jaymassengill3340
      @jaymassengill3340 6 лет назад +92

Don't most tungsten alloys range from just barely magnetic to almost completely non-magnetic?
Even if the pins do contain some metal, I think the housing is too fragile.
Depending on the construction of the gun, I have used padlocks with shackles large enough to completely fill the space behind the trigger. So for example, an AR with a completely enclosed trigger guard could have some extra security added with a thick-shackle padlock. But one with a hinged winter trigger guard would not be a candidate for this. Sure, even a solid trigger guard's aluminum could be easily cut with a hacksaw but then you're getting into destructive attacks which could defeat most any lock if causing some damage to the gun is not an issue.

The best child lock is to INCLUDE your child when you go to the range. My dad did. He let me see and hold the guns when they went off.
I KNEW what kind of power they had because I felt and heard it. It also showed me it wasn’t a toy, because I saw what the bullet did to the targets. I had a friend over when I was 10. Those metal rods are almost certainly not tungsten carbide, a quick test with a magnet would settle the question though, because tungsten is not magnetic. Tungsten is also very heavy compared to the same size steel part. Tungsten is a brittle metal that's not much good for structural parts. Where it works well is in drill or cut resistant plates because it's much harder than most drill bits, or hacksaw and file teeth.
I assume the rods that are supposed to be in the plastic pins are the part where the tungsten is supposed to be. At least that would make the pins hard to cut with something like wire cutters, though in something like this with a plastic body it's had to see that making much difference.

I also have safes and secured rooms with the safes concealed within, (poorly concealed I'll admit). I also secure my ammo separately, (although less securely then the guns). Of course my highest level of security is education and opportunity to go shooting to any of my children and their friend's, assuming they have permission from their parents. If your "child" wanted to take that gun, break the lock, load the gun, and shoot it chances are that they need some education about guns, better parents or psychiatrist.

Because of the relative ease of defeating many of the weapon security systems out there, I find that using a combination of devices gives me the best security when I do not have direct control of my firearms. I use a cable lock on each weapon, each weapon is stored in a security cabinet which I have fitted into a closet lined with several layers of sheet-rock for fire protection, a steel security cable runs through the back wall of the closet into the back of the cabinet and through each firearm and is secured with a padlock, the security cabinet door has a standard lock but the closet door was replaced with a steel fire door I bought for a really low price at auction, and of course a home security system by a major provider secures the room and, indeed, the rest of the house. I did all this a little bit at a time over the course of several months and I am very pleased with the results. The cabinet is bolted to the concrete basement floor and is far more secure now than firearms safe and hundreds of dollars less expensive. I have less than $300 in this setup, excluding the monitored security system.

Tungsten carbide is pretty hard as metals go, so if you can file it, the metal probably isn't tungsten carbide. Additionally It is used as the electrode in TIG (tungsten inert gas) welders, if you have a welding friend and the pieces of metal are big enough they may be able to at least give an opinion.

It's best to not place the movable posts on the finger side of the Trigger, better to keep them on the perimeter, and behind the Tirgger . With posts in front of the trigger, a hard pull on the lock body can sometimes operate the trigger and discharge the firearm. This has been an issue with some of the other types of locks siminlar to those others you showed in this video.

It's obviously not an AK-74SU due to the size (although I could be wrong due to the folding stock), or an AKMS due to the upper receiver's machining, but I'm still curious.

Take a look at the inside of the plastic and look for any markings. From here, it looks like cheap ol ABS plastic but the markings would tell us if it was more robust plastic like glass reinforced nylon, etc would tell us if the plastic would be more shock resistant or just cheap plastic you cold destroy with a simple hammer.

Even now, if when im holding my gun, i could have the magazine out, the bolt taken out, i make sure to never point it at anything i don't want shot. Even when im cleaning my gun and i take off the barrel, i don't point the barrel at anything. This kind of safety is exactly what should be taught by parents. That guns are not toys.

The best way to keep a child safe from firearms is to teach them about safety and what to do around guns. The lock will most likely trigger their curiosity. We need to teach them from a young age the dangers of reckless firearm use, so they don’t seem that interesting to the kid anymore.

The tungsten carbide rods are meant to prevent this lock from being sawn or dremeled open easily.
I fully agree that their implementation looks very anaemic.
However, the length of the rods means they won't come loose or melt out easily. If you actually do a saw test on this lock I think you may find that it's tougher than most people might expect. That is, if the carbide rods are glued in properly.
Tungsten carbide is not cuttable by any regular tool, you cannot saw it, you cannot cut it with abrasive wheels.
Carbide does however have a weakness we can take advantage of in this case, it's very brittle. After having sawn most of the plastic, a hammer should be able to snap the rods without too much trouble.
Another method would be to use a steel disc on a dremel with diamond bonded on the surface (usually meant for stone carving)
That is, if we were not going in through the lock.
