    Thank you for this video. Since I use an OSC camera, I’ve often wondered whether or not I should begin to “upgrade” to mono imaging. Now, after viewing your video, even thought the colors of Chloe’s mono image are more appealing, I see that there’s no urgency to abandon my continued OCS use since the difference is rather subjective. As is evident to all of us who image, this is an expensive hobby. There’s always the temptation to jump to the bigger, more expensive astro-toy, but your video goes a long way in helping us make those decisions. Once again, your content is amazingly relevant. Do keep up the great work.

      Thank you very much indeed Joe! - I always appreciate hearing your perspective on things my friend, I absolutely fell prey to the temptation to spend more and more early on in this hobby, and in doing so nearly killed it for myself! - These days I favour using a super quality scope with a OSC camera best of all in terms of enjoyment, that's where my fun comes from! :-) Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment Joe!

    Hey Luke and Chloe! They both came out really well. Can definitely see a difference, but not surprising considering how vastly different the capture hardware is! The Rasa definitely is a lot brighter and a deeper red, but the wee camera did well. The mono setup has more colour depth although looks a little washed - maybe just a subtle variance due to slightly different processing. I would be happy with either, but overall think the mono took the win this time. 😀 Although the Rasa clouds do look better.

    Hi Luke and Chloe, those two images are stunning. If I had to pick a winner it would be the refractor/mono set up pipping the RASA with what I see as higher definition,it would be interesting to see what the Esprit could pull out using the Player One camera sometime in the future.A great image with the Player One camera again considering it’s sold as a planetary camera.BTW I would love to see some more of your processing videos in the future, Clear skies.

    Great comparison, it is impressive how far OSC has come, with the new cameras and special filters out there. I would also favor the mono camera based image with its more fully developed color palette and the more controlled stars and detail, but the RASA does show off its efficient data gathering by seemingly going a little 'deeper' and getting some extra detail in the surrounding dust clouds. Great work and very fun comparison. You clearly presented the differences for lots of folks to check out.

    In a nutshell I would be extremely happy to have produced either of these images, the end result being more important than how you got there. Great video Luke. Personally I find these comparison videos fascinating. I use a Zwo 294 mc pro OSC with the l extreme filter but have thought about going mono with the new Zwo 533 mono. My issue with mono though is the time involved and also the cost. I'm not sure there's enough of a difference to justify the investment. If you'd have put the two images up left and right and asked people to vote which one was mono I think many would have guessed wrong !! I think I actually prefer the rasa and the OSC on this one !! Cracking video mate 👌

    • @lukomatico
      @lukomatico 2 года назад +1

      That's a great point Paul!! - I really agree with what you're saying about the price difference not really being in line with the image quality difference!! - also, mono does take a lot more effort during capture I reckon, we were continually trying to figure out which narrowband channel needed more frames during this capture, to try and keep things even over these short sessions that made the image - not to mention the fact you have to take lots more flats! I do like OSC best in terms of enjoyment though, so maybe I'm biased :-D

    Luke, I recently switched over to N.I.N.A. from Sharpcap and I too miss the livestack view. However, with the EZ Processing Suite by DarkArchon for PixInSight comes 'EZ Livestack'. You point it to the folder of your subs and it builds livestacks of each filter. Very nice. So while running my session in N.I.N.A. I also have PI up so I can view the stacks as they come in. Interesting to see the two comparisons. First off, the little OSC camera did quite an amazing job really considering that it is uncooled and more of a planetary camera. But the difference is still quite significant I feel with the mono camera setup having much finer details and a better colour depth. However, for someone on a budget or wanting a more hassle free portable rig, the little OSC is worth a consideration and performs well.

    Awesome video Luke👍🏼. Now I haven’t jumped on the bandwagon for mono. I do have Astronomik SHO12nm filters and a 294mm. I got my feet wet doing duo band extract for faux SHO on OSC. The results are great but processing through extraction isn’t exacting as what mono can bring. Where data is embedded and more linear. In OSC extraction you still have to properly pull those filter elements SHO colors and make adjustments. I had to reprocess the heart nebula 3X because there are spots where 03 isn’t showing at some sections of the heart nebula to compare. Unlike on true 03 single filter data. F2 is a light bucket. I recently been using an OAG which is still setup on my rig. I had to adjust my way of processing targets because they turned out dim for some reason. Somewhat different from what I’m used to on a Hyperstar.

    If the stars were processed in the same way, then the difference in size is in the band widths of the filters, 6 nm vs 12 nm.

    • @lukomatico
      @lukomatico 2 года назад

      Thanks Oleg! - The stars were processed similarly, but not identically of course - I think the other issue could be the difference in sampling ratio, plus the extra point-source brightness from the larger aperture of the rasa coupled with the bandpass difference as you mention! :-) Thanks for watching and helping out mate!

    I recently tried shooting a small dim PN with an OSC planetary camera, which is a contrast to what I normally shoot with, which is also a planetary camera, but higher resolution, larger sensor and mono. Before testing, I thought I had made a mistake going for mono, but now that I've done it, I can truly say that I prefer processing the mono images much more. Processing colour is a hassle (for me), and the expense is longer time for capturing.
    I preferred the results from the Esprit, and that was because of the colours.

    Interesting video again Luke, hard to tell this way, looks like the Esprit needs more integration time but absolutely has tighter stars and better detail already, so if it would have more subs it would be a much bigger difference regarding details in benefit of the refractor,.
    The RASA brings a lot more nebula in the image thanks to the f2.
    To do a better comparison the Esprit with mono camera should have a lot more integration time to equal the Rasa with OSC camera.

I am using a OSC ZWO ASI533MC Pro Cooled with this filter and the results are amazing! I get all 4 narrow band colors instead of just 2. Very good comparison, Luke.
    I think that since the OSC with the NBZ cannot record SII signal, the difference will show up.
    Nevertheless, it's very clear that the amount of signal gathered by the uncooled OSC with RASA's fast optics is similar to the cooled with the refractor in OIII and Ha. Maybe a comparison with the mono image processed in those two channels could confirm (or not) that statement.
    The difference maybe worth or not, according to the user's preference. But the result of your experiment shows that the OSC is very capable.
    Personally, I use a C9.25 EdgeHD with hyperstar (f2.3) and a ASI071MC Pro cooled OSC camera and get very good SNR with the frames and the NBZ filter. No need to go for the monochrome yet, unless I plan to image a very faint object at f10.

    I like the mono/esprit 120 combo a little better.. but I have to say, I'm really impressed with the OSC/uncooled camera. You're demonstrating that it is possible to get by with an uncooled camera. What are your thoughts on its performance (perhaps a subject for a video). Well, on my old iPad, which still has decent screen resolution, the RASA appeared as the clear winner. The image appeared sharper.
    I likewise use the RASA 8 and the NBZ (the slightly older "Nebula Builder") but with the ASI2600MC. I have attempted to do MM on the RASA 8, and with some success (not complete success), but truthfully, Celestron did not envision people doing mono on the RASA. You can't put a filter wheel on it, and that is a limitation. With the NBZ doing the nebula building, it would be great if you could click a switch and go to a UV/IR or an LP filter in order to get a full spectrum of star colors. Instead of having to laboriously remove the camera and filter to essentially start over from scratch (usually on a different night entirely). Conversely, I use the NBZ to get "Ha data" for face on galaxies when my LP or UV/IR filters don't provide that data well.
    I don't know a thing about the OSC camera used here; I sure like the price however. I am caught in the "ZWO net" using the ASIAIR Pro with the advantage that all ZWO stuff works great as long as it's with other stuff by ZWO. Can't say I'm totally happy in that boat, but ASIAIR Pro works via a/c and wifi at home and no wifi and battery power out at a primitive dark site.
    The RASA has limitations of course, and I was interested in Shaun Nielsen's new and affordable big Newtonian 8 as a possible alternative.

    I have to give a thumbs up to the mono version. Broader color range, slightly more detail visible in the fine structure. Star bloom is a fact of life with OSC' even the higher end like the ASI2600MC-P (also affected by the filter used). I just made the switch to mono (and of course have had almost no observable nights since). But in the few test images I made I have been pleased with the difference. More post processing times, but some things, like noise reduction, are much easier/simpler with mono images. It also takes a change in perspective since it can take several nights with a mono rig to get a full set of images. Not better or worse, just a different approach.

    It’s astonishing how much better the refractor is with mono…. I thought the RASA would be able to keep up, it really didn’t though on any level… Shows how important a good camera is I guess.

    Both are great but I like the OSC better. How did you manage the amp glow on the 183 specifically, if you remeber, because its notoriously bad on that camera?

      Thank you! It can be difficult to calibrate, but we made sure to use fully matched dark frames when calibrating, so they were perfectly equal in gain, offset, temperature and exposure length :-) Hope that helps!

    Having shot both OSC and now mono, I defiantly like Mono better. Also to the untrained eye the wont notice the noise in the uncooled camera compared to the 183mm. I ran the 183mc on my hyperstar for a while, Then sold the hyperstar and 183 and moved up to the 268m 😉. I am more of a wide field guy so even though I like the 102ED look better , the FOV of the Rasa wins

      I'm glad to see you like things about both images, that's a positive outlook! - I think the FOV of the rasa and an APS/C cam would be incredible fun to use... watch this space! :-)

    Wow! Great images both. I am staying with OSC since image time is limited here with cloudy skies etc.. Mono is perhaps better but OSC can achieve incredible results too.

    How did you get that 1 inch sensor to work with RASA , that is small sensor , do you use some focal reducers ?

    • @jesuspineiro1622
      @jesuspineiro1622 2 года назад +1

      The RASA do not accept focal reducer, they are f/2. You can use a small sensor or a full frame sensor without problems

    • @dedskin1
      @dedskin1 2 года назад +1

      @@jesuspineiro1622 I know you can but you waste a lot of light . Jesus Christ i dont know what is the image scale on RASA but its probably at least full frame if not bigger . So with 1inch sensor , you are wasting 17/18th of light , or image area
      Becase 18 of those 1inch sensor can fit on a full frame .
      That is like having a picture then cutting out 1/18th part of it .
      Thats a waste if you ask me .

    • @lukomatico
      @lukomatico 2 года назад +1

      Hi Pavle! - As Jesus says, the RASA cannot accept any focal reducers etc :-)
      RE: small sensor and wasting potential image space - You're right, there's wasted light but it's the best sensor I have available currently, if I had a bigger sensor I'd be using it for sure! :-D
      I hope soon to get an APS/C size astro cam though!
      Thanks for watching and giving feedback guys!

    • @dedskin1
      @dedskin1 2 года назад +1

      @@lukomatico I dont have it as well , i roll with 550D and 5D , maybe get 6D soon , im not sure if you can put DSLRs in front of RASA , probably you could , a small one like 4000D wouldn't make all that much difference .
      You can mod it easy .
      You probably knew that .

    • @jesuspineiro1622
      @jesuspineiro1622 2 года назад +1

      @@dedskin1 The RASA 8" does not accept DSLRs because of the short backfocus. The RASA's backfocus is very precise to keep the flat field. The RASA 11 can use a DSLR, but it covers a large area of light path. It is always better to use astro cameras of smaller diameter, although they can be fullframe without problems.

    Hyperstar or Rasa? your thoughts would be good 🕸

    • @lukomatico
      @lukomatico Год назад

      That's a tough one mate! - I think if you'd be looking to spend 90% of your time shooting at hyperstar/rasa speeds, then go with the RASA - it's a dedicated, purpose built scope so is going to be, generally speaking, better than a bolt-on solution like Hyperstar (in my opinion!)
      If however you're planning on switching between setups a lot, spending a more even split in your imaging time using the scope at F10 and F2 then Hyperstar makes a lot of sense I think :-)
      Hope that helps!
