Completely agree with the annoyance of opaque bottles and good review Vin. Got this for Christmas and I am yet to open it. The gift set came with a spout to avoid the supposedly dribbly bottle.
I got a bottle of this some time ago, but it is still waiting for me to give it a try. Thanks for the nice review and for your thoughts. I will keep it in mind when I Gove it a try. Cheers!
Purchased a bottle yesterday in the US for 29.00. First tasting was very pleasant and your review was fairly accurate. The nose was soft pears and fresh cut grass/ hay and very pleasing. It has good flavor, but does seem to be short lived and “watery”, similar to the Quiet Man whiskey. This will make a nice summer evening drink that won’t abuse your your palate, or the wallet. For me, a pleasant note in the nose makes for a better drinking experience.
Yes Sexton is third in my list of supermarket Irish Whiskies after Slane and Teelings (Rum Finish), spot on Vin, be patient and don't buy any of them unless they are on offer, and then they are decent value. That Teelings bottle is just about my favourite ever glassware, really old school, and feels great in the hand, the opposite to Sexton, although again with the black glass.
Hey Vin, I’m in the same boat with my preferences. I do like to keep at least one Irish around to introduce friends to whisky. I sure wish we could get RB CS here in 🇨🇦! Sexton sure has a cool looking bottle.
No Nonsense Whisky it’s difficult tho because we all have a budget of some kind for our whisky. I thought I would be wowed by RB 12 and I liked it a lot, but it is about $75 CAD + taxes here and I don’t get the depth of flavour from it (being at 40%) that I might get on other whiskies of the same price. If they ever bring back the RB CS to 🇨🇦 I will have to get it. The regular 12 was the best Irish I’ve tried.
Great review. You've got me thinking about opaque bottles now... I tend to agree, but some variants in blue or black can give a bit of pizzazz to the shelf.
"Almost certainly non chill filtered", he says. I think VP means it's certainly is CHILL filtered. For less than £25, it's not a bad dram - and I get much more Olorosa sherry coming through.
Good review. I tried a bottle of this a while back, not bad but pretty one dimensional. For about the same price I can get some JWB or Tomatin, which to me are much more interesting. I’ve gone through a few Irish whiskeys and the only one I keep in the bar now is RBCS.
terrible pourer of a bottle, nose for some reason REALLY put me off (and I like me some sherry) it also gave me a hangover with minimal dramming - worth comparing to SLANE (also entry level irish). Preferred that from memory. Both are probably aimed at bartenders tbh
Great review- There's some great Irish whiskey out there worth exploring. Most of my haul is Scotch but I have approx 20 bottles of Irish - I haven't got the Sexton it looks a bit gimmicky and basis so I've stayed away, the colour looks like Lucozade! Don't think I'll be rushing out for this one although the Bushmills 16 yo is pretty decent for a 40%abv'er
@@NoNonsenseWhisky absolutely! Caught Roys @Aqvavitae video on the patroen channel earlier - Congrats on hitting 10k, tasting pack duly purchased and look forward to watching next week 👍
Sexton is ok whiskey, but a good value at US$25. The lady that owns the brand said in an interview that this is 4 yo and much of the aging is done in 1st fill sherry seasoned casks. Judging by the strong sherry flavor, that's probably true. I like the nose, far better than the palate. The "grassy" nose, actually is rather common among Irish whiskies. HATE the bottle. Looks cool, but it's a pain to pour through the short neck.
This dram actually really let me down. I don’t know what it is, but I get a serious sharpie marker or pen ink taste that lingers. I think it’s just to young for me. I’d rather reach for Writers Tears, or Bushmills/ Powers/ or a Teeling for a similar price or just pay up and get some Red Breast or something a bit more unique in like a Glendalough especially the Porter Cask finish. I love the look of that bottle, function is a bit flawed though as it always dribbles down the side unless being extremely careful. Great review, definitely not my favorite whiskey and actually one of my least favorite Irish Whiskey’s. For Sherried Irish, I highly recommend Redbreast Lustau.
Re bottle-dribble. Coming downmarket to a mass-produced blend, it is possible to pour The Antiquary without it dribbling? I find it next to impossible LOL!
Sexy, but impractical, bottle. Apricot stones and stale gingerbread on the nose. Ground ginger and cloves up front, barky honey and bran cereal. Leaves a little bitterness to finish, which it rushes to on the tongue. Easy drinking, and with the price fluctuations I'm inclined to wait until it falls before I buy a cellar bottle. However, I do believe it's worth having. The neck pour was miles ahead with chocolate and coffee notes. For that experience alone, I would endeavour to have an unopened bottle on hand, for the right price.
In Ireland and the States, yep, you're right, except for Maker's Mark for some reason.... Most other places omit the "e". It's all marketing. That sir.....is the truth

Says it all when it needs to come packed with a tool to use it properly 🤣
Very needed...
Aberlour 12 has a stupid opening too... I ended up having to drink a rather large dram on the first pour... 😢
This is one of those whiskeys that impressed me on the neck pour but it seems to lose direction as the fill level drops... That's a rare occurrence.
If that happens to me, its going to be very undrinkable by the end 🤣
I always find that the last few centimetres are the best of any bottle...
With very rare exceptions
This is a good outdoors drink.. It would definitely be an amazing camping warmer... on a cold night
Got this for $22 USD. Not bad for a sherried single malt
Absolute no brainer at that price
Yeah - this can be had for $22 to $24 in Kansas.

Dont try it
Great review,... enjoyed 😃 try the Redbreast range especially the Lustau ..... Sherry ☺️👍🏼🥃
That is a lovely dram!

The big question is, have you managed to pour a dram without it spilling everywhere 🤣
Well..no, it dribbles with every pour. But, I will just consider that to be “The Angels Share”.
Haha I always say, one for me, one for the table
Try Whistler 7 Sherry cask strength Irish single malt. Goes for about $55. Definitely not boring
There's absolutely some cracking Irish out there. Redbreast CS is another

I'm a bit out of touch with supermarket whiskies at the moment. I'm an ALDI shopper and don't go anywhere else anymore!
@@NoNonsenseWhisky Aldi and Lidl were my inspiration, although I must be honest I tend to only go looking for the Xmas specials now.
My local one doesn't seem to stock anything good these days 😒

Oh wow, that's definitely a misspoken error on my part. I was definitely meant to say it's almost certainly chill filtered. Thanks for spotting that!

I've seen it for some pretty low prices and it's not bad as a mixer for the that. But it's not worth the rrp at all
Great review 👏 I picked up a bottle in Hawaii. Shame it's not available in New Zealand 😢

I think it could definitely do with a few more years to round off the harsher notes in it. Not quite the premium product it wants to be

Thanks for sharing. I also will not be bringing this bottle home again. OK, but not worth price.
Definitely not a repurchase
Paid £20 for it yesterday... happy with that.
I enjoy sexton, chill filtered, so. Very easy to drink. A good bottle in my cabinet.
I'll see how I get on with it as the months go on but I can't see myself reaching for it very often
The only bottle that I’ve never made a pout without spilling or wasting whisky. Might as well give my a 500 bottle that’s not as hard to pour.
Right? It's not even 90% of the time. Every damn time it spills
Oh man I tried this at a whisky festival once. It was definitely not for me lol
I think I'm going to struggle to finish the bottle anytime soon
All Irish whiskey is by law 3 years in the barrel
And a day if memory serves
I got Bushmills 12 for less than this CAN cost.
