Can this app turn your phone into a hearing aid? As we use tech to combat hearing loss, our pocket computers are powerful enough to pull off some impressive audio processing. Sampling sound around us, reducing noise, and helping us hear things we might have otherwise missed. It's not just about making the sound around you louder, but reducing the noise competing for our attention. Does Sound Amplifier work? Let's take a listen!

Juan, I'd just like to say I really appreciate you making videos like this. I am a viewer who suffers from severe hearing loss, it has definitely been quite a difficult obstacle to tackle throughout my life. I was honestly so happy to find your video as this is an app that I've actually never heard about until I saw you, and it's an extremely helpful tool for me. So thank you, I really look forward to tech vids just like this that assist people like me.
Hoping to produce a few more of these over the next year.
Great vid with valuable information, thanks Juan.
😊
Thanks for sharing this Juan! Google has done a great thing by making better hearing accessible to the masses. Also check out how AirPods Pros can function like hearing aids using transparency mode with headphone accommodations.
Great video! Good detail man!
😎👍
Nice & great review as always.👍
😊👍
happy new year Juan!
Happy new year!
Excellent review, just downloaded the app and looking forward to giving it a try..
👍
Great 👌 , got a new sub.. will try on my Pixel phone, keep up the good contents, IMO you should more subscribers...
MARANATHA 👍
I might use this for listening my friends behind my back.
I use a hearing aid that I lost recently. It was from resound and custom tailored to my hearing profile. I have hearing loss in only 1 ear and have been looking for a solution because the resound earpiece is $1700 to replace.
I noticed when I turned the ANC off my galaxy buds it amplified the sounds around me and let me hear easier. It led me to believe there was a way to do this- hence the app showcased here. Thanks Juan!
It won't replace that hardware tuned for you, but hopefully it'll help 👍
i use 15 euro aids from aliexpress, for my right ear; perfect i love it, have a spare one, never needed yet, 1 year going; mother in law had the million dollar shht from the rippoff store, tailored to her hearing BS, still has it, constantle needs re-tuning or something, what a bunch of crap, she prefers the 15 euro one, she says it is louder and clearer, plus it is easier to clean.
I used this feature on my pixel 4 last year. I was using the wired usb-c pixel buds and it was a pretty cool experience. My ears was plugged but I can hear what my cousins was saying. It wasn't perfect but still pretty cool nevertheless.
Thank you. I'm experiencing some hearing loss (too many concerts!), but not to the point I can justify spending thousand$ for hearing aids. This is a great compromise for someone with minimal, yet annoying, hearing loss.
Thanks Juan, I was concerned it might be malware when it suddenly appeared on my phone's home screen
I've been hard of hearing my entire life. I've tried using this app with varying success. Doesn't quite replace my hearing aids as they are digital and are programmable to my specific "asymmetrical" hearing loss. This was well done, thank you.
It's an encouraging trend to see a phone app use off the shelf consumer tech. That also means the next generation of dedicated hearing aid hardware should be impressive.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Agreed. I hope I don't come across as being overly negative. I AM impressed with what I've seen the tech do - like the Pixel transcribe feature is mind blowing. Kind of makes me want a REAL Pixel next time around I'm shopping.
I'm glad somebody thought about folks in my situation! I will be sure to give it a go again!
Just curious, did you activate the "Adjust ears separately" feature in the app? That's supposed to address "asymmetrical" hearing. My mom has the same issue and she says it helped her.
What's the best neckband BT with the main purpose for phonecalls !!!!!! I need some advice
Hi Juan can you use an external mic and use Google sound amplifier?
Hey! It says to me that not is not available... what should i do?
Im wearing hearing aids, and i was consideru=ing the main differnce between sound amplier over the hearing impliefierm what hands to youy recommend (for church interior)?
Wow thanks, things are getting harder to hear and volumes are going up. I will try this.
Give it a try but I have to suggest working with a doctor if you can. Especially if you're noticing hearing loss.
I've found another use for Sound Amplifier. I bought a MicroClimate Air and no noise-cancelling earbuds, no matter how advanced, can work properly in that enclosed dome. I needed an external audio passthrough solution and Sound Amplifier was a welcome solution. Although, the built-in mic on my Pixel 2 XL drops off quickly with distance, so I'm going to try a USB-C lav mic next to see if I can't get a bit more sensitivity. Next step, attach a small Bluetooth audio DAC to the helmet and attach the channel outputs to a couple 4 or 8Ω Dayton Audio exciter transducers to pump audio into the dome from the outside.
Whoa. That sounds interesting...
@@SomeGadgetGuy Follow-up: Sound Amplifier doesn't recognize my external USB-C lavaliere microphone. Google Camera does. Can you reproduce this issue?
Edit: I was partly mistaken. It does support external microphones, but not when you simultaneously activate Bluetooth audio. It's either/or, but not both. Google really needs to add independent audio routing to the app.
This is pretty slick. Can't beat hardware-based solutions with dedicated signal processing, but for a free tool, this has some great utility. This won't unseat the bone conduction bluetooth buds I use for situational awareness, but pretty cool to have still
It worked better than i thought it would!
I wonder how well Sound Amplifier actually works on bone conduction headsets given how they're notoriously poor at reproducing lower frequency audio due to how they have to couple with your soft flesh prior to hitting your skull.
@@MikeTrieu u seem to have good info, where can i follow u, new to hearing aid world, thank you Juan
Tried it but the lag was too much.
I wanna get my hubby so.e earbuds that help him with his hearing... What's compatible with Apple pro buds in the android please...seeking advise, wanna get for his Birthday Dec 12th
New subscriber, new subscribe in 01-01-2021 20:40 from north Africa. Thanks and happy new year with blessings to come.
Happy New Year 🎉
@@SomeGadgetGuy Thanks for the reply and for your wishes. I came from Salah channel.
Unfortunately its not working in Stereo mode audio.
O.k. I'm hearing impaired. Not deaf, but have to use Bluetooth hearing aids both sides. I remove them to insert my buds for Android music on my Tablet. Then someone begins to talk to me. My hearing aids are synced to my mobile & they're over on the table! Is there an app that I can use to pause the music & listen to the conversation through my ear buds, more or less then continue with the music?
Okay, I have SSD Single Side Deafness, I use Bone Conduction Headphones for the reason of I can hear the sound going to my bad side in my good side through bone conduction (what ever is playing to connected device like my phone so music whatever it may be) weather I take off the good side or not if I do have the bone conduction on my bad side I can hear what's going on in my good side it's super weird for me because I just discovered this, then I stumbled upon this app Sound Amplify from google apparently on android 8.1 and up devices but mine was in the settings in my google pixel 6 phone, I can indeed use my device as a mic for hearing on my bad side as I can't normally some think I'm very rude because I just don't hear them, why is this really important though safety that is why, Driving for example like me I have good earing on my left side but I cannot have the window down on that side at all or that is what Ill hear only, the people like the passenger that do talk I can hear them talking at time but I cannot understand what they are saying so over the years I have developed this ill fill in the blanks deal and it's gotten me in major trouble before, but this app helps me out on Driving and using bone conduction headphones with it as it supports almost all earphones, i give this app well 5 star, 10 star, it really just depends on the site but for me this app is a life savor i can't believe this actually exist
Glow by alien ant farm. Nice!
Works with plugged in heafphones, not ear bids
Wish I could use this with Spotify for a LowFidelity Transparency Mode
same here.. it cannot used with spotify?
@@violetsareblue6818 Nope, it pauses any background audio. I recommend an app called "Safe Headphones" on Android to make it so you can do Transparency Mode
@@NigelMelanisticSmith thanks alot bro
They need a small, QUALITY Bluetooth Mic. that you can put closer to the desired source so we can keep our phons on us.
Yeah, wouldn't that be something? Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Sound Amplifier currently supports external mics. I just received a USB-C lav mic and the app doesn't detect its presence although the Google Camera app does. I can't imagine anyone is happy with the audio quality from the phone's going built-in MEMS mic.
Im dying to see Juan's review on apple Airpods Max.
:D
Found it on my Pixel 4a by accident
Just tried it on my pixel, its creepy and satisfying at the same time
It's a trip for sure.
Man, where was I at when you made this video. lol. I using the Google sound amp app and Samsung's amp apps. I actually like them both and use Google Trans Live and Translate app for other languages. Could you make a new video for us this year? Thanks again.
I should give it a revisit.
@@SomeGadgetGuy cool. I been playing with the softwares on Samsung lately. Google and Samsung are some interesting companies bro. lol.
Tq amplifier
Just tried it on my V20, this phone's microphone is unmatched well at least against the newest V60 it's not
Can’t wait to get RTX voice mobile
For reals! It's such a perfect tech for mobile.
Was gonna say the same thing. RTX voice is mighty impressive.
I took a hearing test for work not too long ago. I thought I'd do poorly on it. It turns out my hearing is fine, I just don't pay attention.
Similar to me with short term memory loss. Just don't pay attention to what people are saying/ what I'm doing
Hey, I used to think that too, but you might actually have an Auditory Processing Disorder! Talk to an audiologist about it
@@sonotfetch If you don't mind, what is an auditory processing disorder?
@@briancaster2876 Basically it's a neurological disorder that affects the way that the brain processes sound. So being unable to decipher the source of a sound, having difficulty remembering verbal instructions, listening to music but being unable to decipher the lyrics (this is very evident if you're able to enjoy foreign music without thinking about the fact that you can't understand the words), or hearing someone say something but only being able to understand it seconds later (basically a delay in your hearing and processing).
It's something that can't be found with a simple hearing test since your ears are fine, it's just your brain. But an audiologist will provide more complex tests that can identify APD.
So I can’t use live listen coz I don’t have Apple earbuds and can’t use this because I have an iPhone. Cool
I mean... Seems like the issue is Apple then...
Do v need data for that....do v need pone on no

😊👍
Spy aid
I have Hearing aid
Seems silly posting to a week old video..but having tried the app for a week on my Huawei p20 pro,I can honestly say my mic pick up on my phone is bad..very..very..very..bad.
Well sorry to hear that, but it's something to consider for a future phone. Shame more techies don't talk about audio...
@@SomeGadgetGuy thanks for taking the time to reply, appreciated..
Perhaps it's just time to consider upgrading to a new phone.. 🤔..
And agreed completely, there's very few tech reviewers I've seen besides you & flossy who take the time to discuss anything besides the top of the money tech tree, so long may it continue and thanks for the videos(especially those featuring food 👍)
LOL I'm such a poser foodie...
@@SomeGadgetGuy hahaha. 😅
how to uninstall it lol i jate those apps pops out without my permission lol sound amplifier is a hacker
Am I first ? Ayyee
