Just bend it a lil bit, "make it sound kinda outta tunish, why? I don't know, it's kinda cool!" .... man I so love these!! Thanks so very much Jim!!!
Glad you like it!
First Let Me thank you for the great lessons I am a young 75 year old Guitar player but have really wanted try the banjo as a child we would listen to the grand Old Opry from Wheeling west Virginia every Friday or Saturday on the radio Can't remember what day but I always loved to hear the banjo tunes but back then where I lived there was no banjo teachers or music shops so I wound up with a Sears Guitar but that made me happy at least I could learn Bluegrass and country tunes actually got good enough to play in some local bar bands long story short I tried to learn the banjo from video tapes but never really got good but after watching your lessons on RUclips started to understand more about playing the banjo and have actually played some songs that sound pretty good and I really like the way you talk to us on your videos kind of like talking to a friend or someone you know with a little humor thrown in Keep up the great lessons and again Thank You.
Thanks for watching and letting me teach you 😊
Tank you for the lessons sir, all over from Brazil! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thanks for letting me help!
I love songs with the old mountain sound. Do more with that old mountain hick sound please. Index on 4th gets easier the more you do it. this is Awesome
There are probably more on my channel that are similar. I'll be pondering on some new content while I recuperate.
I revisited this song today. It has a cool. Old timey sound and it’s fun to play.
Thanks. Glad you are enjoying it!
THANK YOU JIM PANKEY
You're welcome!
Thanks for the fantastic new old tune!! Keep 'em coming!
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Awesome! Love this tune! Thanks again, Jim!
Thanks for watching 😀
Jim has taught me to use my fingers in ways I never imagined
Glad I can help!
A woman can do that too :P
I practice every day. Js
But even if you didn’t play banjo, watching a Jim video would be a positive ,interesting, and bright spot in your day.
I thank you on every vid I watch. Hope I dont sound like a broken scruggs record? . :)
Thanks for letting me teach you!
Thanks! Have to try and learn it this week whilst in lockdown. Ha ha, might be a bit of karma on a messed up world, Jim creating a bunch of banjo players.
You can do it!!
A good friend told me if the woman is alive at the end of the song it’s not bluegrass. Great pickin Jim
Sounds about right...
Just drinking my coffee and about to grab the banjo for some practice. Hope you're doing great thank you for the video. Rock on, man!
Enjoy!
Excited to learn it! Thanks Jim!
You'll have it down in no time!
Cool! Love "dirty" banjer!😉 Thanks Jim!
Me too!
Cool video love the tone and those slight bends take it to the next level
It's the little things...
So excited for this lesson!! Thanks Jim!
Let me know how it goes
Great lesson Jim, tied my picking fingers up a few times getting that 4th string with my index finger. Love the sound of these oldtime 'murder ballads'
I would be great if you could do a few. Thanks for the video, keep well buddy, Davy.
Thanks. You'll get better with that index on the 4th.
Thanks Jim!
You’re welcome ☺️
Very cool toon I'm gonna slow this down and learn it
You can do it!
Good stuff
Thanks 😊
Nice versuon, I will down load this tab.
The link is in the description...
I'll have to give that one a whirl. Thank you! While I was working my way through this instrument I started doing that 4th string index thing a lot I kind of like it to play some partial chords and stuff in a up sort of sweep too. I learned in your lessons ain't no wrong way if it works for you. Oh yeah I also tried picky picks about 4 months ago, I haven't put my dunlops or nationals on since then, I really like them. Thanks again!
Glad you like the picky picks! Let me know how this tune goes for you.
Loved it ! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey Jim, hope you've had a good Christmas. I'm just going back through your videos after not picking up the banjo in nearly 8 months. (Open heart surgery) Starting to make progress though, tonight is the first night I could fret the neck. The last few nights I've been trying to get the muscle memory back with my rolls. I'm about half my normal speed at the moment but it'll come back. Great to have banjo back on my knee and your videos on my phone again. Have a great new year buddy.
Glad you're able to pick it back up! Happy New Year!
Love
☺️
Jim you mentioned melody notes. I know that you said that you never bothered much with scales. What is the best way for a beginner to find the melody notes? Memorizing the fret board seems like a daunting task. Would you consider doing a lesson on how to find melody notes in a song? I can guarantee that you will get views as this is a much discussed topic on banjo hangout. Many of us struggle to find the melody of.
I think the reason it gets discussed so much is no one is willing to do what it takes to learn to find the melodies.
Sing the melody. Now, sing the first note of that melody. Now, find that note on your banjo. Sing the second note. Find that note. Repeat process until you've got it. It won't be easy at first. You will get better at it.
Yes, it's a lot of trial and error. No, there's not a formula for it. Will ear training help? Yes, but the process of hunting those melodies will train your ear.
So, I probably can't do a video on it. No one wants to hear what I have to say on it, as they're looking for "the trick". There is none.
@@JimPankey Thanks Jim! I am in it for the long haul. I don't want to just copy what I hear or see other people play. I want to find the notes on the neck. I have no music background at all so it is a struggle. Love your videos! I watch em all.
@@JimPankey the "trick" is to practice. One of my heroes, Mike Aldridge said once that " it didn't come a bit easier for him than it does for the rest of you" also, "the thought of giving up is never an option".
That tune is so cool
Glad you liked it!
G’day Jim,
I’m a new Subscriber - really enjoying the content you make!
I’m a soon-to-be banjo owner, I’ve just been feeding through your videos to build a playlist.
Being from the 90’s era, I don’t suppose you have a banjo guide on The Grid - Swamp thing?
Cheers,
- FMG from Australia!
Thanks 😊. Don’t think I know that one.
Hallo Jim!
II have also a friend who plays saxsophon. He ask me of have some notes for the song pretty red lips.
We like to learn playing together banjo and sax.
Where, please may we get notes and tab. Thanke you Mr.Jim.🪕🎷Josef from germany😊🙏
@foolishfrankie might have that...
I have no banjo tab for it though. I just played what felt right according to what he was playing.
You may not understand this Jim but are you doing a grace/ghost note on the fifth string before you pluck the 1st string on the first forward roll? Played up stroke with the thumb??
I never play an upstroke with my thumb.
Jim I learned this in one watch, you seem to be the only RUclips teacher I can learn from. Having trouble singing along to this version tho, any help?
Glad I can help. As for singing this one, listen to Ralph Stanley.
@@JimPankey I guess I’m just having trouble jumping in at the right time
First two notes you play is “Polly”
@@JimPankey I’ll keep trying. Going to hop in your next live stream for an example if it’s not too much trouble
Jim, do I dare ask for a detailed RK20 vs RK35 vid?
You can ask, but I no longer have an RK20. Honestly, there’s no comparison; the RK35 is superior in every way.
@@JimPankey Thanks Jim. I suspected the RK20 was just for a review and not kept. I do like the comsetics of the inlay over the 35, however, I suspect the 35 Madison has better quality everything and I'm pretty much looking for one to last as my only purchase due to finances, I'll have to go used. Your a good teacher and I enjoy your vids.
Actually gave the RK20 away in a drawing…
@@JimPankey I'm laughing at the irony of this. I've never won anything but was looking for a drawing but they seem to be rare. There is just something about dragging around a week later after a bout with COVID and discovering I missed the only drawing I've heard of. If you can't laugh at yourself it's over.
@@mikefinley4367 I had covid in January and just couldn’t practice for like a month because I was gifted month long ear infections from covid. Sound hurt my ears and that was so scary as a music nerd. I’m all healed up now. Play every day. But I lost ground on my skills because I just recently picked up the banjo.
Had to relearn a bit.
Hope you feel better from the covid also.
Thanks
Is it okay to rest your palm on the head of the banjo when playing
It’s not a good practice.
