I recommend a previous step to research: Try to write your essay first without sources. It allows you to clear your thoughts, detect biases, find what info you lack, what sources you will need, allow you to be really original and be less anxious about the quality or have a writer's drought.
there was one semester in college when i had a 12 page paper, a 5 page paper, and then another 8 page paper all due around finals week. after i got through that, i never struggled with papers ever again. this is coming from someone who chose to study a hard science all because of essay-phobia 😂 one tip i picked up over the years: after (and while) you do your research, just start dumping all your disparate ideas down onto a blank doc, even if they're disjointed and not in actual sentences. don't even bullet point or organize, just dump. and then build your thesis around the ideas you've put down. i found this approach a lot more helpful to structuring my papers than the classic build an outline by coming up with a thesis and then listing a bunch of facts that support it. it also made my papers sound way more organic and not as stiff and obviously formulaic.
flush0 I second the idea "dumping" technique. It's what I have started to do when reading heaps of scientific papers for new projects in my PhD research and even do this for advisor meetings. Afterward, I tend to reorganize those scattered notes to reflect and organize my findings from a literature review or the meeting details.

You should do a video on scientific writing since it’s vastly different from essay writing. It’s also very formulaic and filled with norms that many people are not aware of.
A tip I came upon in terms of editing was to change the font or the size of the font when rereading and editing. It really helps because often times it is easy to gloss over your essay when you've looked at it so many times. At that point, rereading isn't really helping. When you change the font or the size your eyes are forced to actually read the essay and pick up on mistakes you would have missed.
@@tariktoogood3957 What a surprising comment. I cannot remember what my essay was about, but I ended moving back home and becoming a middle school teacher. It was the last thing out to see myself doing while I was in college, but it is a very rewarding job.
well made sir. my main problem is always the introduction as it causes me to overthink which then causes me to not do jack sh*t. thanks for the tip to start at the body first. simply brilliant
Currently writing a 30 page history thesis. Got hit with covid(and unfortunately brain fog) during the semester and then a bunch of midterm papers and tests. I suddenly found myself very very close to the thesis draft deadline with next to nothing done. First steps I took was to outline. My general topic is understood, but the actual question and thesis is somewhat vague. 30 pages is a lot so I divided my paper up into sections of smaller papers. I found myself getting lost in sources which didn’t help the fact that my actual argument wasn’t totally clear. I was looking at sources with the hopes that they would help me narrow it down. The advice on sources and research was very helpful for me so thank you!
One tip i discovered was a quick way to google a topic only from a specific website. As a student, i'm sure most of us are discouraged by our teachers and lecturers to use internet as a source, but there are a few exceptions. There's a quick way to look for topics in that exceptional website. Just open google and type in the topic of interest followed by ; and then the recommended website. For example 'psoriasis; emedicine.medscape.com'. automatically, the google search results will only show psoriasis topics from emedicine.medscape.com. For medical students, if you must use internet as your reference the best online source out there is a emedicine.medscape.com. (emphasis on the emedicine, as this is different from the normal medscape for laymen, as it's peer reviewed, up to date, more scientific and uses more medical terms). I find it very useful in doing quick revisions and fact checks. Just a tip because it was a life saver for my last case write up :)

The first step is always to "just start". Starting anything will tend to increase your chances of procrastination. When I have something to write I just write down the first thing to come in my head, no research... no nothing. I *"word vomit"* everything I know in a "semi" essay format. Hi Thomas! Can you make a video on how to manage university studies while getting struck by a sickness?(Also, if you could make a video on how to avoid sickness that would also be nice).
This is a nice guide to help students save time without sacrificing quality. I should recommend this to second year students. Though I am surprised you skip the outline.
Proper good content! I do have a couple of questions though. 1 - I'm someone who can write a decent essay in terms of content and structuring. However, my immediate tendency is to use long and complicated sentence structures, which are confusing to the reader. (I have to consciously break things down here hah). How can I improve the quality of my writing? 2 - How do you get better at the editing stage? Spotting mistakes in very poor quality writing is easy, but I find it difficult to find them in my own writing. I also struggle with the finer points of the editing stage, like deciding if a section is necessary, or if my argument is too roundabout.
here for the milk tea Regarding your first question, I often also use overly complicated sentences too, usually in an attempt to reach the word limit, but my general rule of thumb is if your sentences still make sense and are coherent, then there's really no issue. With your second question, I also struggle with finding mistakes within my own writing, mainly because I've been staring at it for hours. What I usually do is either walk away from writing for an extended period of time, or sleep overnight then get back to it with fresh eyes. Also reading the essay aloud as if to an audience helps you spot mistakes
also for some more advanced spelling and grammar checking try some online websites, because some writing programs can miss quite a few mistakes. personally i use grammarly but i'm sure that theres a bunch of different ones out there.
here for the milk tea Can't help for the first one, but there is a lot of methods for the second one. Simple spelling errors Can often be used with software (There's a lot of free grammar checks online) You should of course be carefull. They Are not Always correct. The rest is a bit more complicated. You Can make an agrement with a classmate, that You read each others essays (Can find false data, mistakes, poor writing and ask if something was poorly explained) For me, it also helps to hear it out loud. You Can read it yourself or get software to do it for you. This helps a lot, because the sentences gets percieved in a different Way and Sometimes You Can just hear how stupid something sounds.
For citations machines, I highly recommend Zotero. It's a web plugin doesn't have obtrusive ads like Citation Machine and it's much easier to use than any other citation making website.
This is useful advice for RUclipsrs, too.
I recommend a previous step to research: Try to write your essay first without sources. It allows you to clear your thoughts, detect biases, find what info you lack, what sources you will need, allow you to be really original and be less anxious about the quality or have a writer's drought.
Yes. Write down what you know/think you know as a first draft, then check the research to see how on the ball you are.
Yes! I used to worry about not having sources to support my ideas, which used to slow down the writing process.
Good idea
I wrote a paper today utilizing this method and it really works!
Thanks for that assurance. I would do that but thought it was the wrong way to do it, but for me I found it easier to do it this way.

3. You have a new subscriber.
4. Such helpful tips. I have a 4000 word essay due in 3 days so I’m grateful for your knowledge. Very reassuring to hear that complicated vocabulary actually reduces the mark!

Your very profession and how you applied these said writing skills is a direct example of why writing is, in fact, important. This argument is only valid if we assume that you're applying these learned skills to boost productivity or improve results in a particular way.
Thanks thomas, for the advice. I will give it a try.

Thank you for sharing.

I like the don’t write from the intro first thing!! That’s great!
Thomas Frank, you're changing my life. I'm using your videos to change myself and become a productive woman and environmental activist.
This is a nice guide to help students save time without sacrificing quality. I should recommend this to second year students. Though I am surprised you skip the outline.
Love your megaman poster!
You Can make an agrement with a classmate, that You read each others essays (Can find false data, mistakes, poor writing and ask if something was poorly explained)
For me, it also helps to hear it out loud. You Can read it yourself or get software to do it for you. This helps a lot, because the sentences gets percieved in a different Way and Sometimes You Can just hear how stupid something sounds.
So helpful. Thank you
For citations machines, I highly recommend Zotero. It's a web plugin doesn't have obtrusive ads like Citation Machine and it's much easier to use than any other citation making website.
Thank you, I need to finish writing my essay today!
