- Space is an incredibly harsh and immense environment absent of everything we need to live, and abundant only in harsh radiation and dangerous micro-meteors. Today we will examine how those will impact humans who come to dwell on space ships or habitats.

Arthur is an honest enigma to me, never met a single medium that manages to be both intriguing, terrifying and soothing at the same time. Doesn't help at all that the quality just gets better and better. A true national treasure.
I've never watched a show in my life weekly, I'm talking from cartoons as a kid, to online videos, or anything. This is the first 'show' I watch every episode when it comes out, and one of the very few I get excited to appear. Keep up the great work man.
Same I genuinely can't wait for Thursdays now.
Watching you, Isaac Arthur, is like being in a lecture at school. You learn a lot. Have a few moment where you get lost. But enjoy the voice of your Professor so much that you don't care how long you sit in that hard wooden chair.
:) I think that's why I always say I prefer doing this over return to Uni and picking up the prof-route again. I only have to give a discussion once and everyone can tune in when and where they want, rather than some stiff cramped desk.
And that why I tune in and watch your amazing videos every week. I plan to donate to your patreon now that I have a job now. "College life sucks" but thanks for everything. P.S. your the reason I passed my space science class my sophomore year at UCF

Where are you going with this?
Don't screw around with the _warship_ Rocinante, they have more than just plot armour, they have plot weapons, and four or five hero characters, they're always going to win.
your videos are always so comprehensive. as you were talking about a crew returning to Earth with tons of gold and platinum, the first thing I thought was, "how long until that amount starts to affect market prices?" and the next words out of your mouth were regarding market prices! I love it!
NewGoldStandard ... Isaac always cover the bases.
I LOVE what you do! Keep it up! I always look forward to a new video from you! 🙏
Jesus H Christ!
This is the funniest thing yet does Jesus Christ watch or did God say "Say you like dis or down to Satin"
It's about time you get your channel verified JC, what with all of the imposters out there.
I love it when Jesus Christ appears in the comment section of random videos
@@exittierone me too, especially since he's verified lmao
When I worked on a submarine I had to get used to gravity being variable.
You would walk through the white tunnel and see a footprint on the wall.
We would emergency blow and get a short roller coaster ride.
Nothing as extreme as a space ship though.
I honestly don't know how anyone spends months on a ship let alone a sub, but it probably is the best analogy for a spaceship as opposed to a ship or plane.
Joseph Fox what kind of submarine did you work on? I'd love to work on a submarine like an Ohio or Virginia class sub but claustrophobia would probably kick in.
Sometimes they stick claustrophobic minds or tall bodies on subs, it's sadistic.
I was on a fast attack.(Los Angeles-class but I had to look it up to be sure, yay memory).
The Navy always needs more nukes (my job) so if you qualify they have a spot. It's not for everyone.
Joseph Fox that is sadistic, lol. The Los Angeles class sub was quite a good sub for it's time. If I'm not mistaken they still use them to this day upgraded of course. Not sure what role they are used for nowadays. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
Joseph Fox nevermind. The navy still uses them. They retired about 27 and about 35 are still active.
This channel has made Thursday my favorite day of the week. If humanity accomplishes even one of the things you've discussed over the years... wow. Hope I live to see it.
Some things should be made, within 200 years. Most things would be done in 50 years if we actually tried to do stuff. I mean colonizing the moon wouldn't really take that much effort... I mean even hollowing out a large chunk of it to create a base wouldn't really be too hard, Even if modern day solar panels are quite crap, on the moon they would work better. I mean you could make vertical farms with red heat lamps easily, and seeing as hydroponics is 7 to 8 times more efficient than using soil, you could easily manage 5-6 million people on the moon, in about 20 years. Water wouldn't even be a problem, you can just turn hydrogen and oxygen directly into water, you can add basically recycle everything.
Everything that a K-1 Civilization can do, we could do to, if we put effort into it. Everything K-2 and K-3 can do is off limit for now.
colonize the moon?
the radiation, lack of gravity & its inner gases would kill humans?
I remember when I was watching your videos back when you had less than 100k subscriber and since then I'm still waiting your new video every time like a kid and still recommend your channel to friends who are in sciences !
This is my favorite channel. It challenges my mind to fathom utter madness which be be a reality some day!
Thank you Mr. Arthur.

7:49 "since helium doesn't bond to anything, like all the Noble Gases it's very aristocratic and snobby." *shows images of aristocratic gases*
I just laughed so hard. A great episode as always Isaac.
Have been using that description of Noble Gases when tutoring chemistry for years. It is one that everyone remembers.
yeah and at 13.34, "artificially synthesized gruel" for food, yum yum, sign me up!!
they really put on airs
Happy Arthursday! Yet another great video from Isaac and his hardworking team!
I like the idea of adapting our culture to living in deep space. Imagine a nomadic culture in the Inner Asteroid Belt, where wanderers trade whatever they mine from asteroids, and gathering ice for fuel and/or water.
-The migrant fleet
Beltalowda!
Assuming faster than light travels don't mess up the time between how much would it take to reach each other! 😅
I can imagine that, some large roaming freighters - or a lot of small ones, or both - that spend a few days at each station, picking up and dropping off some standard cargo (ice, air, water, refined chemicals, food) and collecting some new long-term delivery contracts
Beltalowda!
Still feeding us gold entertainment Isaak! While we lazily and spoiled with it just watch and sometimes remember to like, not often posting comments… never doubt how many we are who love this!
I like how Isaac pointed out that a ship will likely not worry about anything other then the fuel/energy usage. Remembering back to Star Trek: Voyager, I mentally cringed every time that they were worrying about anything other then fuel and energy. So many times a crewman would say something like, "Captain, energy reserves are down 10%." Janeway would then reply with something like, "That's it, no more coffee for breakfast." Like that cup of coffee would have gotten them one more system closer to earth if she did not drink it.
IDK mate, my replicator is always bitching when I ask it to produce coffee. Could be a lot more energy than you'd give it credit for.
Why not just turn all the lights off?
Hey, a large cup of coffee is like 4.086x10^16 J of energy!
All week I look forward to your new videos and you never disappoint! Proud to be a patreon contributor.
I like this video. One point on contention about what the Expanse did with Ceres is they did live inside it while spinning it up. Down in Ceres was towards the surface and up towards the core. The spin was less that .3 G and the authors described the further up you went. The worse the coriolis was. Eros was the same.
I would LOVE it if you could do an episode on future space suits. I've also thought a lot about suits being long-term wearing multi-function multi-environment things.
Agreed! Been thinking about this a lot lately as well.
He recently did one. But you've probably seen it.
I had a sci-fi idea where certain spaceships were built with pretty much everything covered in padding that was also handholds (think inflatable ladders) and the architecture was all small rooms, spiral hallways, and rooms with carefully placed pillars, etc. so there was never a danger of falling more than a certain distance.
An Isaac video a day keeps the existential dread of probably living in a simulation awa.....oh wait, it actually enhances it
lol, I did the script for the May 24 episode a couple days back and we hit on simulated Universes there again too
Well, time to clear my schedule for May 24th then! :D
You cannot be in a simulation. Beacuse it would mean that the REAL world is worst then this. In wich case you either don't have an option to be in a simulation or activly working on to fix the REAL world.
The REAL world being borring is not an excuse either, beacuse in that case you get bored of being in a simulation too. So yeah. There is absolutelly no reason to be in a simulation like this.
"Yeah, let's build a computer simulation for this other species that's so shitty that they question whether or not it's a simulation within just a few decades of developing computer technology themselves. I mean, even though we could easily just prevent their programming from being able to contemplate the idea entirely, let's not, because of reasons." - some species more advanced that us
Do you "simulation theory" believers ever actually think about anything before you speak? Just wondering.
You assume the simulation is built for us. It might just be a high fidelity simulation of star formation which happens to have physics complicated enough to allow life to emerge.
Hell, it could be some 5th dimensional beings screensaver for all we know.
Yet another wonderful episode. Thank you so much for feeding my daydreams of space Isaac :)
Another great video. Thanks, Isaac!
I love your videos. Found them a month ago and I've seen almost all of them. Keep it up!
I really enjoyed this episode. Again your very practical engineering approach is much appreciated as opposed to the blue sky hand waving. Thank you.
Nowadays eagerly awaiting every episode on what is now called Arthursday and it always a pleasure to watch. Great content and beautifully narrated. Thanks a lot for the upload.
You're becoming the source of my dreams! Thanks for your videos, really!
Wow those must be some messed up dreams! :)
Your videos are intellectually rewarding, well-crafted and all the topics are really well covered. They should be translated into different languages by talented narrators like you, in order to benefit more communities. 😋
Agreed.
Thanks for wrapping up with “Into The Storm”. It makes me feel like I just watched an SFIA video. (And I miss it when you don’t play it.)
It's my own favorite outro, no surprise there, but I think if we used it every time it might get stale and there a ton of songs we use that just sound better at full volume and rarely get that, so its nice to switch out occasionally.
Your topics never fail to interest me, although the Fermi Paradox ones are my favorites.. Thank you for sharing all your insights and brilliance into all these wonderful topics. And of course, Happy Arthursday!!! Peace.
Another happy Thursday at the end of a rough week. Thanks Issac.
Another 10 out of 10 episode !
I'm glad you got in to Expanse. I remember few years ago you said that you are not particularly fond of the show but you are willing to give it another go. As always, a fantastic episode. I'm looking forward to next week's episode about O'Neill cylinders.
Thanks for another great video, as always!
Brilliant insight thank you all who participated in this segment. Keep it going.
Isaac- know where I can get A Drink and A Snack?
I want snacks!
We cannot get you a drink at this time. Isaac used all the water in his multiple hour hot shower. The water supply needs to be processed through the recycling tanks.
On planet Dessert Paradise, A planet Terraformed into a Giant Candy Cane.
I want that planet!
But would you really want to drink urine recirq wine? This and other deep topics to ponder on #Aurthurdays.
*great video!*
Thanks, ditto on your own, a nice overview on plausible interstellar spaceships
The Exoplanets Channel I subscribed to your channel as well. Very interesting videos.
justin biggs thanks!
The Exoplanets Channel no problem
Of course it's a great video, Isaac Arthur did it.
I picked on watching you videos in early June of 2019 and can honestly say I’ve watched them all more then once. They are extremely informative and get one to wondering what our future holds. I wasn’t great with Math in school but I always loved science, with you I’m back in school and I don’t want the bell to ring. Keep teaching Iaasc
probably the most underrated channel right now! Keep it going!!!
Mr. Aurther you had me worried. Your video's are usually posted by my second break but this one wasn't posted until my last break. Good video as always. Have a great weekend
The Expanse is one of the best science fiction series I've seen in a long time! Just when you think decent sci-fi on tv is dead along comes The Expanse.
Thank you for what you do Issac.
Brilliant, yet again. You've really been improving your subtle sarcastic humour lately - made me laugh out loud several times, you've got such a way with words!
Loved it, thanks again Isaac.
Amazing Amazing content as always man.
This video got me hooked on Leviathan Wakes. One of the best books I've ever read. Incredible story and truly fantastic cosmic horror.
The Expanse is a fantastic show. Literally my favorite show
Your videos are always the best. I’ll continue to spread the word. Thank You
In Leviathan Wakes, Ceres is lived inside, not on, similar to how Eros is built. That's why in the series, S2E4 the railway they are on is upside down in relation to the surface and Miller's "Spoiler" falling away when he does a hard landing.
And the gravity on those stations is not 1G, if I remember correctly.
Thats the problem though. Once you increase spin gravity on the inside to the point it's stronger than surface gravity, the surface of your asteroid starts flying into space.
The habitats are built on the surface and look pretty exposed, so it's likely that the material that would fly off has already flown off and the remaining material is stabilized and constructed on.
Wait, the TV version Holden is even more reckless?
Is that even possible?
The future speculation videos don't really interest me much but when it starts to deal with space you have my full attention.
Great video isaac!
I very enjoyed this one, they’re always good but I found this particularly entertaining
Thank you for the amazing video!
Your content is amazing.
This episode needs more views. It's pretty good. It was pretty suspenseful when you described air-bags on space suits...
THANKYOU SO MUCH.. I love both science fiction and futurism, and The expanse Novels and novellas!!
OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG I LOVE Space Operas and The Expanse series is a great one! I've read all 8 books. I'm so glad you're into it also Isaac.
It's only marginally related, but my car is old enough to have separate shoulder belts that button to the headliner. I find it amazing that there was a time when people didn't wear them. What's the point of the lap belt if you're going to smash your face into the steering wheel and die anyway?
I love your videos, btw
Way to make my night, Isaac! Haha
Just remember that seatbelts are only god for head on impact. Wearing one in a side on impact can cause you more damage than not, and seatbelts themselves are likely to cause damage regardless. Humans have a long way to go before we've got a super safe harness system.
What about a five/six point harness?
Adding to this, remember: people didn't trust their safety to others quite so much back then: people didn't want to wear their seatbelts because they were worried if something happened they'd be unable to get out of the vehicle fast enough. Their plan for disaster was to leap from the car. Nowadays this is both much more dangerous (higher-speed vehicles, more vehicles on the road, etc) and harder to do (opening the car door against oncoming atmosphere, etc), while the safety provided by staying in the vehicle during the wreck has improved miles and bounds thanks to crash testing and improved materials science.
@@M33f3r ...
We are on our way to being "surrounded" by airbags.
Great video. I'll have to add the Expanse series to my to-read list! Looking forward to the habitat video next Arthursday
Oh, I can't wait to hear Isaac Arthur on void ecologies! :D
Thank you for the videos. Its folks like you who keep me from ditching RUclips.
Another possible direction humans may take for deep space travel is to breed or genetically engineer humans to be very short. If you cut the height of a person in half, you cut the mass of that person by at least half, as well as reduce the size of much of the ship significantly. The cost of space travel per head (literally the head of a person ) would be dramatically reduced.
What a well researched and narrated video! you've earned a subscriber!
Can't wait for next week! One of my favorite topics
Great video Isaac. Love your content.
I can never fully predict the perspective and angle you will present, from the title and thumbnail -- after watching I will never think of the topic without including your perspective in my thoughts. Your logic is an example to everyone ever attempting to be logical. I hope you are an influence regarding how to think and use logic in all fields worldwide
Awesome episode. I just knew _The Expanse_ would get at least a mention the minute I saw the thumbnail. Awesome books, awesome series. Signed up to Amazon Prime just to be able to watch Season 4 this December.
That was my biggest problem when I started watching the Expanse last night. They have massive water and oxygen shortages on Ceres, despite water asteroids being common and or mostly being oxides.
Some while ago I spent a lot of time thinking about how the clothes of an early-era zero-g space habitat would look like. Deployable membrane helmets and gloves stored in collar and cuffs in case of sudden depressurization/ filtering failure, micro-turbines for propulsion, wrist-harpoon for working near the habitat's outer shell.
And puffballs everywhere. Not the mushroom, but engineered organisms that use their lungs as a rocket motor to float around the hab and catch any trash that isn't supposed to be floating around.
To my shame though I never gave the furniture thought it deserved.
O'Neill cylinder is next!!
New ep new ep new ep !!!!!!
It's here it's Heree
Happy arthurthursday everyone !
🙌🙌
Another excellent episode Mr. Arthur. I look forward with eager anticipation to O'Neil Cylinders.
Happy Arthursday! A great episode, as always. A shorter one was a refreshing change tot he usual! :)
Another great episode. You always give me lots to think about ;)
Who dislikes this stuff? It’s amazing keep it up
The Expanse-books were definitely better than the series - but by a smaller margin than the majority of book-to-video adaptations.
22:56 My antique book collection is coming, so help me God!
Thanks Isaac. Very informative and detailed, I really enjoy your work thanks for taking the time to make these.
Thanks for another great video Isaac Arthur!
When Isaac started describing how a spacesuit would actually work in the future I was blown away. From where is this guy getting these ideas? My god, he should write sci fi novels or have Netflix create a miniseries. Just take the script and put over some insanely cool graphics and we are done.
Wow! 22300+ views today!
Gratz! :)
Keep up the awesome work!
Looking forward to the discussion of the habitats.
I am a big fan of Peter F Hamilton and the Night's Dawn trilogy.
Thank you so much for making this.
Nothing like living in the present. Such a wounderful gift.
Stephen R. Donaldson's Gap series is another one that's lesser known but does a good job of describing the small course adjustments to avoid weapons fire in space, as well as the layout of a ship using spin to emulate gravity.
Isaac, I love that your videos tend to feel almost like tutorials for space exploration. I feel like I could just save up a few paychecks, head down to the ol' rocket store and stake an asteroid.
I heard that a good red wine goes well with Isaac Arthur.
Good for the brain & heart.
Isaac, this video is super old so you might know this already, but on the point of spinning up ceres to generate more gravity, i think we should clarify that the residents of ceres station live *inside* the asteroid in hollowed out rings of tunnels, where "down" is away from the center of ceres. so assuming ceres doesn't fly apart from all that spinning (something suggested by most other sci fi nerds), their method of generating gravity is actually valid and theoretically plausible (no comment on the energy needed to do that though). I also need to point out that while water is abundant in the solar system, it still needs to be transported to ceres, which is how the show begins on the Canterbury. While Ceres irl has tons of water ice on it, in the Expanse (the show, the book gets this wrong but Leviathan Wakes was also written before the Dawn probe discovered conclusive evidence of water ice on Ceres), it's explained that martians took all the water ice to try to create oceans on the red planet, though it was a colossal failure. again, no comment on the plausibility of mars just stripping away a ceres' entire stockpile of water ice within a century
How to survive in space. Turn everyone into Cybernetically enhanced beings, / turn everyone into AI's, then if you want to repopulate you can just rebuild a body and reprogram the AI into a brain. Shouldn't be too hard.
There's a great series on Netflix (called Knights of Sidonia) where people are genetically modified to use photosynthesis (only having to eat normal once a week). There's a lot of other cool, practical elements the creator thought of to have people living in space, on a Giant spaceship, essentially on the run from predatory aliens.
Edit: Oh, and sudden, deadly gravitational changes, when their poorly maneuverable ship has to evade, is a big part of the series. (Everyone has to wear rockclimbing hooks on their uniforms.)
Read the manga too, it is more detailed. The anime isn't half bad either, just maybe not for many, at some parts.
If you love 3D anime such as Knights of Sidonia, i recommended to watch Godzilla, Kaijuu wakusei too.
Im not Godzilla fan, but i quickly attached to it. Because it has better 3D animation than Sidonia, like less mouth stuttering.
Also the story.
About how humanity tried to leave earth living in spaceship and face difficulties in an effort to flee from giant aliens emerging from nowhere.
They decided back to earth to stop the sleeping giant rather than trying to survive, let alone living at the harsh space.
It has more scientifically accurate atomic breath too.
I'll have to give it a try, Netflix tends to be okay to great on scifi but does thankfully provide a lot of it
Admittedly I haven't seen Knights of Sidonia (yet!) but the concept of modifying human genes for photosynthesis has been theorized before and general consensus is it wouldn't actually contribute more than a few calories a day. Not even enough to fuel an immobile sleeping human body. Our brains alone require ridiculous amounts of energy just to carry out basic functions. I guess I have to watch the show to see the handwave about it and then see the other cool stuff. :P
+Edhi Kurniawan I actually just watched Netflix's Godzilla recently and I thought it was pretty good! I can tell things are going to pick up with the coming episode (which I'm glad I won't have to wait as long for as others have had to). :P Also, I agree there were parts of Sidonia (mainly relational drama) that won't appeal to many people, but I don't think those character interactions took away from the battles so much as heightened the stakes of them.
+Isaac Arthur I think you'd enjoy most of it (at least on a depicted conceptual level). Also, love your videos Isaac! They've been a great help to me in world-building for future stories of mine.

Can you do a video on radiation mining? Taking cosmic rays using the energy out of them and expelling infrared or radio waves seems like and ideal solution for deep space if only the ships were designed for such things.
"Space is a murderous death-pit."
Remember back when Isaac was all about coffee and staying positive?
I recommend people to both read the books and watch the series if you love space operas. The books as always go in-depth to the characters, the plots and intrigue and the world building. However there's still value to watch the series if you've read the books as the space combat CG is the best space combat CG I've seen in my life, they get all the details right. If you want the audiobooks are great also since you can listen to the narrator speak in Belter creole which is lovely to listen to.
Everytime i fall asleep i throw on an SFIA episode, literally every time then my computer plays SFAI till i wake up and shut off my comp. You all should try it
hey can you make a video about space suits next time , great video by the way
Its great that your introduction sentences right before the music bit kicks in remind of something I would come across in the writing of Douglas Adams :D
Amazing video AS ALWAYS please keep checking the comments it brings us closer to you than you can imagine and makes us viewers true fans not only to your content but you yourself. I hope one day you reach some type of fandom large enough to make a great living like you truly deserve. Keep the grind up and know we appreciate you and what you do bro!
Sadly RUclips conspires to prevent me seeing most these days, it seems to randomly notify me of about 1 in 10
Isaac Arthur probably from how many comments, still they need to fix that.
Happy Arthursday everyone!
I genuinely love the content you make ❤
You make a great point about fixing a greenhouse in Earth's being a hassle, imagine having to adapt to every home repair being the equivalent of extra vehicular space walk. It definitely brings things into perspective.
Indeed, shortly after making the first draft of the video we had an amusing high-speed wind storm come through that gave me ample reminder of what a pain it was, and that was just me on a step ladder with a staple gun.
Looking forward to this Isaac
In The Expanse, I'm pretty sire Ceres Station is inside Ceres, and 'down' for the belters living there is radially outwards.
You're totally on point with the problem of Ceres flying apart though.
