Well, Miles lied about a tons of tunes :) Even the one of his tombstone was one that he ripped off 😄 But I do agree that it does not sound like a tune Bird wrote
@@JensLarsen oh yeah, certainly, he was very good at ripping stuff off. I just feel like he was so intimidated by and in awe of Bird that he wouldn't dare to say such a thing. Only real certainty remains that they both played it killingly!
I learned the idea of legato the last note of the string recently from Josh Meader - a rising modern jazz fusion guitarist. He systemises and uses it mainly when playing. Didn't know you already covered this stuff way back then with such a simple explanation. Great instruction as always. Thanks Jens!
Thanks. Many times when my playing is slow is to focus briefly on my pick and make sure it is parallel to the strings. It takes half a second to adjust and makes a big difference.
@Jens, This is one of the smartest videos you have done. I do not believe I have seen anyone REALLY address this very important issue for executing lines on the guitar so comprehensively . I commend you for addressing this. It is so needed in guitar instruction. (The only one that I knew of the touched upon these techniques was Howard Roberts in his book _Superchops_. I went through this book years ago and it changed my playing more than any other study program I ever did)
Great ideas as always. Using a combination of picking styles and articulations seems common knowledge these days but when I was in college in the last 80’s everyone was preaching alternate picking. Fortunately I got excited about Frank Gambale and got a little on that technique into my system while I was still young.
Dear Jens I am using legato with open strings for fast phrases, it is somehow my own legato technique, that is very fast and allowing me to attach melodic phrases and fast shifts, the only thing is to keep in line with background music
Thanks, Jens! I'm always working on Donna Lee on guitar and on upright bass. This helps me on guitar. I'm also working on Pat Martino's solo on Days Of Wine And Roses. Lots of sixteenth notes. Will see if this helps on that, also.
As usual, another very useful video from Jens. Donna Lee is such a classic. Usually ascribed to Parker, but it has been said that Miles actually wrote the head. Regarding improving guitar technique for speed - Check out Frank Gambale (played with Chick Corea, etc) - Chop Builder. The musicality in these exercises could be called into question because they are simple triads and are very “popish” sounding played over a simple drum track. However, they are fun to play and readily available on RUclips with tabs. Looking forward to trying your fresh ideas with Donna Lee.
Jens Larsen yes it is! It was filmed in the early 90s. Aerobic videos were very popular back then with good looking ladies strutting their stuff on your television. So, Gambale released a guitar video that was kind of a spoof on that. Very funny, but also seriously challenging with Frank going through the 24 modes mostly in the key of G at a high velocity.
This is such a great video. I learned Donna Lee last year but this would have halfed the learning time for sure. Another connected video question would be: when do you know what position to play in? For example, the second half of the A section, I learned one fingering then realize it didn't make any sense fingering-wise. I ended up learning it all over again in another area of the guitar.
Thank you! As for choosing positions: I really think that will change from person to person, it is difficult to pin down. It can be interesting to check out how videos where others play it, like Joe Pass playing Donna Lee
@@JensLarsen ya I know there isn't a "right" way but man it is tough sometimes when you get to horn specific bebop stuff. Fingering just go out the window haha.
It isn't that fingerings go out the window. It is that you need technique that can actually play good phrasing, and for jazz that means combining several approaches. Yngwie Malmsteen probably doesn't sound good playing Donna Lee (not that I think he really cares)
Hey Jens; If I, or any of your devoted fans, would like to purchase: "Modern Jazz Guitar Concepts: Cutting Edge Jazz Guitar Techniques With Virtuoso Jens Larsen" where should we buy it from to give you the MOST money?
Only the occasional YT video. I think it is great but I never really felt like modelling my picking technique on other people, maybe beyond Steve Morse, which I can't because I hold the pick differently :)
@@JensLarsen That's cool! You should check out the free season he has. It illuminates WHY given a certain pickslant you have to play 3nps legato in order to shred them (which I'm not there). But since applying some of the concepts I can get some licks sloppily in the 260-280 rage which I couldn't really before.
@@JensLarsen He's had gypsy players come on but I agree a lot of the examples he gives are metal or shredder stuff. It's more the principles which are applicable outside that context.

No. Too much virtuosity in theme. :)
No, I think phrasing should be as high a priority as speed. Fast with bad phrasing is not going to get you anywhere either :)

Josh Meader plays like this and his picking hand is sooooo relaxed!
Thanks. Many times when my playing is slow is to focus briefly on my pick and make sure it is parallel to the strings. It takes half a second to adjust and makes a big difference.
That's true actually the way you angle the pick can make a huge difference :)

Well, a solid alternate picking is not really a problem :)
But great that it turned out alright!
Frank Gambale is the GOAT!
Dear Jens I am using legato with open strings for fast phrases, it is somehow my own legato technique, that is very fast and allowing me to attach melodic phrases and fast shifts, the only thing is to keep in line with background music
I'm glad you brought that up at the end with the change of positions of the A note. It's a lot easier and i was doing it that way already
Jen is the man; always a good presentation, Kudos!

All in 1 position with 3 notes per string.

Can we make common 6 tuplets sequences into common 16th sequences ?? Maybe a little tricky to do that..
shouldn't be a problem?
That's jazz. 👍👍

Ok. The stuff I saw was very much directed at metal melodies and not really useful for stuff like jazz, but there's probably more :)

Jens, how do you build speed? Do you use a metronome and start slow?
Yes, that was pretty much how I did that. Every day scales from really slow to really fast 🙂

Having good flow with picking the phrases shouldn't feel like your holding your breath. I have to remember to breathe with harder parts.
True, I tend to breathe as if I am singing the phrase
Hit settings button at 8:00 and slow it down to half speed and you'll hear my drunk uncle talking
I want to see you play that strat for once 😛
I have a whole video coming up on Jazz tone on a strat.... 😀 (but you are going to have to be patient...)

cool
Or maybe 16th notes sequence into 16th group of 5
Quite a few of 16th note sequences are already groups of 5?
