  • Tales of the Valiant (ToV) is a new role playing game from Kobold Press, based upon the D&D 5E rules. Think of it as 5th edition version 2. ToV is to 5E as Pathfinder was to 3.5.
I backed it on KickStarter and here I am unboxing it!

Thanks for putting this out. No one is talking about ToV and I'm getting worried. I just got my box. I remember backing this project while drunk with hate for WotC and the OGL issues. Starting to worry since DC20 outraised ToV with time to spare with 1 book of history (Alkander's Almanac of All Things).
Good news - this is the best GM Screen hands down! The Monsters have great reputation but I haven't read through it yet. Doom points seem like a good and easy to use addition. I wish they had the roles like MCDM "Flee, Mortals!".
Bad news: Only 3 Sub Classes for Cleric and 2 for everyone else. This is supposed to be compatible with 2014 5e including people like the Xanathars and Tashas (I think). Also, I was hoping for changes to Ranger and Monk but they are not large changes.

Thanks for your thoughts. I just checked out DC20. I won't be backing it. It seems different enough from 5E that it will feel like a different game (4 attributes instead of 6, multiple point systems for actions). Also, the MCDM rpg won't compete directly with ToV/D&D, since it's more of a tactical combat game rather than a narrative based RPG.
My concern is that WotC have not taken One D&D in a different direction to 5E. So ToV and One D&D are both backward compatible improvements of 5E. ToV won't be able to compete in the same market niche as another product with the full force of Hasbro behind it. I'll be posting my thoughts about this on the Kobold Press ToV discord forums soon.
It may be that the appeal of ToV is that it will become a minority alternative to mainstream D&D. If I'm the only DM in my small city running ToV, it will feel like the old days when I was the only kid in school running red box D&D. Not a bad feeling!

I would complain about the box that should not arrive damaged the way it was packed.

They gave a $10 credit to everyone who bought the slipcase, as they couldn't replace every slipcase.
