Alto Choir Practice: “ Agnus Dei ” soprano solo and Dona Nobis Pacem , scored for SATB soloists and chorus, is from the Mozart’s Coronation Mass “Krönungsmesse” KV317. The Missa brevis in C major, was completed on March 23, 1779. It was first performed for an Easter Day service on 4th April 1779. The mass acquired the nickname "Coronation" after becoming the preferred music for royal coronations including the coronation of Francis I in Prague. The music itself is celebratory in nature, and would befit an Easter Day service, or the crowning of the Blessed Virgin perfectly. To that end, the “Coronation” nickname has also been associated with Salzburg's annual celebration of the anniversary of the crowning of the Shrine of the Virgin Mary. The hilltop shrine of “Our Lady of Maria Plain” is home to a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, and has been a major pilgrimage destination for over three centuries. The miraculous image was crowned on July 14, 1751, and the anniversary of the coronation is celebrated on that day each year. In 1983, Pope John Paul II prayed before the image of the Virgin at Maria Plain.
