- In this video I’m going to be purchasing my first pair of flat pedal shoes, the shimano GR5. Giving my thoughts on the shoes after my first day wearing them. If you have any questions make sure to leave a comment or follow me on Instagram @GoldGloveMJ
The small holes on Vans fit right over the pins in pedals. Like they were made to fit.
Great vlog Matty, you wait to see how much more power you gain from those new shoes out on the Roscoe!
Damn you're improving fast. I just found your channel today on one of your older videos and your skills now are so much further than a month or so ago. I really need to start pushing myself more like you do. Shows how fast someone can get better when they put in the effort. I've mtn biked frequently for the past several years and still am very scared of jumping like that.
Wow, I love seeing your progression of learning about the sport. I too have been wearing Vans to ride and just bought some Freerider 510s last week. They should be here this Thursday. Can't wait.
I never used " mountain bike shoes". All I can say is my Vans grip my flat pedals with pins like crazy. Sometimes they get stuck!! I love them.
Good content on these shoes! Really good for us to hear that are newer to the sport. Keep the good content coming!
Great vlog. I like that you show the community aspect of things and showing others respect for what they ride. It wasn’t that long ago since you were on that Marlin 6. I bet that kid will be in the local bike shop soon! I don’t know what’s more dangerous for you though: the trails or the LBS. I hope they threw you a discount for the plug.
I’m glad you like the shoes man! I love the content👍
Thank you Sam I really appreciate!
Nice! They'll make a big difference on the MTB next time you take it out.
The guy was spot on with the 5.10. It's *super* tacky which is why people love them, but they can get chewed up after a 1 - 1 1/2 year of heavy riding due to that soft rubber.
Thanks for watching! Yea I heard some guy say he tore his knee because his foot was so glued to the pedal from the 5.10
Grip on Vans is amazing. Over the years I got problems with tingling in my pinky toes. I wonder if dedicated MTB shoes will help me with this.
Your content is sooo good man, please keep up this grind.
Thank you Ricky I really appreciate it!
My dad just picked up a Remedy and it’s great to see how the bike “helps” him on the trail. The bike just works with him and he’s not fighting the bike on the trail like he was on his other (entry-level) bike.
Rolando Vera nice!
I also use mid tops. They give you more protection against crank slaps.
Nice video I like how you are doing Accessories and showing bike store and not sticking just to riding love good video as Usual
I just got the 5-10’s yesterday and man are they grippy! They are like magnets to any surface! $100 on Amazon. I also replaced the stock Bontrager pedals on my Roscoe 8 with the Race Face Chester’s. Insane grip with that combo! I am a little concerned about the longevity of the soles now that I’ve watched your video and how the 5-10’s wear out quicker. Guess traction is a trade off. 🤔 Keep up the great content!!!
Thanks! I use the same pedals as you. Awesome pedals!
Love that PK Ripper 👍 As an old BMXer I'm attracted to dirt jumpers, but be too far into midlife crisis territory for me haha
Haha they are a lot of fun for sure!
😫... please don’t remind me of “midlife crisis”!!! I just turned 50 and am getting back into mountain biking after 25 years! My mind still thinks I can do it but not sure how my body is gonna hold up! 🤪
@@subman719 i think go with your enthusiasm. I'm in the same boat and enjoying riding, so why not. Just get some padding haha.
I’m 51 & just bought 2 SE BMX cruisers! Don’t sell yourself short man. I started out just wanting to get outside & lightly cruise & get some exercise & sun, but now I’m hitting the trails & really digging it!
Great video man! You've helped make up my mind on some flat shoes.
Thank you for watching! Glad I could help
Great content and your video skills are getting better too. I'm new to Colorado so I like seeing all the tracks near me that you go to that I don't know about.
John Atkins thanks I really appreciate you watching! Welcome to Colorado!
I ride with a pair of air jordan 3 retro. Thick stiff sole ,ankle protection. Extra layered leather on toe 👌 and the flat bottom grips pedals superbly
Back in the day when I was into rock climbing (10-15 years ago) I had some Five Tens for climbing and I also owned a pair of their approach shoes as well. I can attest to the fact that they make some of the grippiest soles on the market! They were pretty durable as well. (I still have the climbing shoes in a box somewhere.)
Anyway, might need to check someplace online for the MTB shoes. Personally, I still like muh Vans.
I love the channel very entertaining love it. I went clipless for my trail/CC bike and it really changes your riding. But for dirt jumper flats are the way to go 100%. What im saying is, you should try clipless it only takes like two rides to get used to them and its worth it trust me.
Matty, nice videos, way to go. It was good meeting you today, Sterling had fun watching you jump. I’ll download his camera and see if he got some good ones of you
Nice to meet you guys too, Sterling is awesome! Hope to see you at the park again sometime.
Matty Johnson, Sterling did get some follow cam footage on one line. How should I get it to you?
Peter Mann you could send it to my email. Johnsonmatty870@yahol.com I plan to post the video with him pretty soon
cool, just sent it to you
I got 5/10 shoes about a year ago and had loads of grip. But it started to to diminish about a year in. Why? It was the pedal it really helps to have a really solid flat pedal with great pins then just about any riding shoe will be great👍👍
Your video came at the right time, it's time for me to skip my Vans and get some decent shoes.
Appreciate the video. I just started riding about 6 weeks ago (on a Roscoe 7) and have been wondering if I should invest in some riding shoes. Got my shins all marked up from the pedals after my shoes slipped a few times pedaling up some steep hills.
Proper shoes will make a lot of difference in your riding! For mountain biking, a soft soled, flat bottom shoe will grip the teeth on the pedals better so you don’t slip off as easily. I just invested in knee-shin guards too because there will be those rare moments when you might come off the pedal and catch it in the shin. Hope this helps!
subman719 what knee/shin pads did you get
Damn, how does that shop look fully stocked? I work at a trek retailer and we have a few e-bikes and one Fuel ex 7 in stock. Pretty crazy times, we can't get any more 2020's in stock either
Yo! What Fox Elbow Pads are you wearing? Awesome channel by the way! I'm still loving my Roscoe 7! Thanks Matty!
I wear the fox enduro knee sleeves and fox enduro elbow sleeve
@@MattyActive Awesome, thanks man!! I'll check those out!
Great videos. I still have the slate and yellow marlin 6. Cant afford to upgrade but like you have discovered I need a tougher bike. So far its surviving will ride till it dies ha. Keep up the good videos. Would like to see some shots of you riding and jumping in 3rd person. Would be cool. #ukfan
Shimano GR soles last way longer than the FiveTens. FiveTens are slightly trippier but I look for long term value and Shimano is made better
Hey man how have those shoes held up a year later? would you recommend them?
Yes they have, they are starting to wear down now tho after a year and a half but I’ve ridden them pretty hard. Very quality shoes in my opinion
Come out to the west coast...AZ...gotta ride Sedona or south mountain... have fun!!
When I get a full suspension Sedona is definitely on the list!
@@MattyActivelol you can do anything on a hardtail long as you have the right mindset
First like and view I got you
Love the pk good vid
I just have to stick with regular Nike, since I wear a size 16 and obviously people who wear 16's don't ride bikes lol.
Wow 😯 lol
nice video and jumps
Did you invest in knee and shin pads?
Yea I got both elbow and knee pads
All decked out now. That Trek Fuel is such a bad a$$ bike. Its the sticker shock that repels me away.....LOL
Looking for some mountain bike kicks that don’t look like trash.. wish I could convert my Jordan’s 😂🤣
Do they run wider then regular shoes?
Yes they do
@@MattyActive thanks, go to know.
If ever you come to Vancouver, let me know. You have a place to crash, and we will ride the North Shore.
Is it just my idea, or you are still using those cheap plastic pedals that came with the bike? Use metal pedals, with metal pins, so your feet stick in the pedal no matther what shoes you wear.
I have race face Chester pedals now
