  • We were invited out to Harataki Onsen in Aizu Wakamatsu to shoot a video, because they're an Onsen that's open for people with tattoos! That's not common here in Japan. There are rules for using hot springs and onsens. A bunch of them. Today we're going to let you know what they're all about, so that you can be ready when you try one out for yourself!

    As a Japanese, I have to say thank you. Japan is a welcoming place and we want to be tourist friendly but it's also a country with a lot of unspoken rules since it's been so homogeneous for so long and so many things were "common sense". But because of this lack of explicit rules, non-Japanese come and (innocently, I am sure) wreak havoc in places like onsen that rely so heavily on people being well mannered and respectful. How else can you share the same bath water with strangers? If people don't wash themselves before getting in, or drag their hair through the water, or start scrubbing themselves in the bath, that's just so disgusting.
    Unfortunately, many Japanese people (especially young people) are losing a lot of their manners and common sense as they mistakenly believe that that's what freedom and modernization are. So don't make the mistake of thinking that just because that Japanese looking girl is dragging her head in the water so it must be fine - a) that girl might be Chinese or Korean or another foreign visitor who is not in fact Japanese and b) just because other people are being rude, why does that make it okay?
    A couple of other points in addition to this very comprehensive guide:
    1) be careful when washing long hair. If you're used to flipping your head or vigorously lathering your hair, you might actually be splashing people in the tub that's usually less than 2 meters away from the wash stations. Be mindful of others, this isn't your enclosed shower at home.
    2) As you leave the washing station, turn around and make sure it's in the same state you found it, meaning take the shower head to wash away any soap suds or hair into the drain, reset the stool/bucket so that it's closer to the wall and not getting in people's way. If you brought your own toiletries, repack them and put them somewhere where they won't get in people's way or will make people wonder if the shower stall is occupied. Do NOT leave empty packets of one time use beauty products lying around. I see this A LOT and it's just rude - don't leave your garbage around for others to pick up. They should have little trash cans in the corner for this, and if they don't, then it's your job to go back into the changing room to dispose of your trash.
    3) Enter and exit the tub slowly and gently. I have been splashed in the face numerous times by rude people who just stand up super quickly and aggressively walk across the tub to the stairs. You're sharing a tub full of super hot water with other people - try to be mindful of splashing others. And obviously don't swim, no matter how big or deep the tub.
    4) When coming back into the changing room, dry yourself off at the entrance, don't drip all over the place as you walk around. Again, if you use disposable toiletries as you get dressed again, throw them out, and don't leave make up stations/sinks covered in your hair. I even pick up my hair that falls on the floor but I admit that's not necessary, but stepping on hair is gross so I do it. Put the towels in the appropriate hamper when you're done, don't just drop it on the floor and expect someone to pick it up for you.
    5) Women - if you have your period, please don't use the onsen. It doesn't matter if you wear a tampon - tampons can leak, and as you walk around with that string dangling out, everyone gets grossed out since they know you're on your period. It's inconceivable as a Japanese to use onsen while on your period.
    Some of the stuff above (especially 4) are standard etiquette for locker rooms anywhere, not just Japanese onsen, but all of the above are in response to actual behavior seen in actual onsen in Japan. Maybe such rude behavior is okay in other countries, or behavior is controlled more institutionally or structurally (i.e. showers separated by walls so you can splash around without inconveniencing others), but Japan relies almost entirely on the good behavior of individuals and does very little to address it institutionally or structually, so the threshold for rudeness is set REALLY low. We get that not everything we do makes sense to others, and we definitely lower our expectations for foreigners, since we know that for many, they aren't being rude on purpose. But the behavior I've seen is SO egregious that I can't imagine it being not rude anywhere. Like, picking up your own trash is a pretty universal etiquette.

      Satopi3104 I had read that it is also nice if you use a locker that isn’t the most convenient for you. It shows respect to regulars and elders. Or is that just for public bath houses?

      Thanks so much for fleshing out this topic by the things you said in your comment! Most people don't think about others in their daily lives, so it's a good reminder to use your brain and think of how your actions make others feel. :D

    • @Satopi3104
      @Satopi3104 6 лет назад +13

      oh you mean like try to use the ones that are too high or too low for elders to use? I mean, that's awfully nice of you, but it's not a rule and no one will think poorly of you if you use one at a comfortable height. you don't know who will come in when and when lockers will open up so I think that would be really hard to actually manage. That said, I do use the higher ones since I know statistically most women in Japan are shorter than me. But if you're average height then you shouldn't have to struggle to use one too high for you.

    Semi colons are used in place of coordinating conjunctions ( , but / , and ). You could also think if it as putting one between two main clauses in a compound sentence. The hitch is that the two combining sentences need to be related. Ex. I mowed the grass; my husband raked up the clippings. (Both are about the grass being cut in some way.) Sincerely, a 9th grade English Teacher.

    Had the opportunity to go to a Ryokan in Gifu this summer. I was so hesitant to actually go in the onsen, but ended up going with some of the other exchange students. I was able to converse with some natives who were visiting and not one of them stared or even questioned me about my surgical scars or bruises (the fun of spinal fusion and having a bleeding disorder). I'm glad I was able to enjoy the onsen and make conversation in my limited Japanese. I highly recommend trying it regardless of how uncomfortable with your body, it helps greatly build self-confidence and relax you. If they have an outside open-air bath during summer, try to go at night and see some of the fireworks!

    When I went on a Japanese exchange they had a mini "trip" that a few exchange students went to together to see the sights and do a few Japanese customs and understand them.
    We had to do onsen. None of the other white students joined in and so it was me and a bunch of Japanese, Chinese and Malaysian students. I felt so different body wise compared to the rest of the people there but once the initial naked bit was done we all chatted in the bath and it was so relaxing and you kind of do forget you're naked for a few mins.
    It was super nice and fun. I'll never be 100% comfortable being naked in front of people but once you're in the water, it's all good.

    • @MrMadamS69
      @MrMadamS69 5 лет назад

      Lauren Yes, it can be weird at first, but the main thing is everyone is naked, so no one wants to be stared at or seem like they’re staring. You’re all in the same boat. I’m glad you were brave-you’ll have better experiences!

    I visited an onsen this year rather spontaneously the day before I had to leave Japan but I had no idea letting your hair touch the onsen water was considered rude! None of the websites I had visited about onsen manners mentioned that. The onsen I went to also had a little prep area for after your soak, where you could use hair dryers, wash your face, and use a bunch of skincare products. Japan is awesome :'D

    It was so amazing, well worth the getting naked so that you can sit in natural hot spring carved into the mountain with forest all around you

    kinda weird asking but if no hair isn't allowed to touch/drag on the onsen what about people with pubic hair?

    • @eatyourkimchi
      @eatyourkimchi  7 лет назад +59

      Haha it's not weird. Pubic hair falls out a lot less than our normal head of hair, and it tends to be shorter. The idea is just to keep the hot spring as clean as possible so if everyone left their hair down I would imagine by the afternoon we'd have our feet tangled with knots of hair. They still come in and clean the onsen every day.

    • @sheilahiggins6427
      @sheilahiggins6427 7 лет назад +12

      In my experience Japanese women remove far less pubic hair than western women. Wash well before entering. No problems.

    • @susanchristopher9439
      @susanchristopher9439 7 лет назад +13

      Simon and Martina just to add to that, was curious whether you're supposed to wash down there before you get into the public onsen. I'd want to of course-- but self conscious of scrubbing down there in front of other ppl 😳

      da96103 I definitely didn’t put up my hair. I, in fact, dunked my hair purposefully in the water. I didn’t scrub myself with the scrubby towel or use it for modesty. I went into the changing room with all my clothes on, changed into the yukata, walked out into the bathing area, and awkwardly scrambled back inside when I noticed not one else had them on or hanging anymore. It was an experience

    Oh my gods! So Sanji, Zoro, Brook and Luffy drinking milk with Kuzan after meeting up, totally "nakers" (They had modesty towels on though, so it's figurative nakedness here.), in the men's bathhouse (see One Piece Film Z) is a totally legit thing to do in onsen/bathhouse culture. I can understand why hair is not allowed in the onsen (Don't contaminate natural hot springs, bloody Americans!), and also how the subject of getting wet before you enter is answered differently depending who you ask.
    Martina, your feet are totally beautiful, especially those swirling flower tattoos and purple nail polish.
