As a literature professor, this is my most fave among BTS songs. The lyrics, symbolism. It's a poet's haven . Glad you're slowly catching up. I wish more people like you get to appreciate their artistry. They are very talented, but very humble even with all the success and accolades they have.

Blood Sweat & Tears was a game changer in the KPop world, not only because of the music, but also the deep & symbolic text in the lyrics. Some of the riffs & timbral textures go back to 1980's synths. This was released in 2016, a sort of time where BTS was starting to get bigger & this song played a huge part in that accelerating ramp-up & global awareness that there is something special about this band.

70 year old BTS Army here. This song is inspired by "Demian" by Hermann Hesse and is about yielding to temptation. Also, fyi when they sing manhi, manhi, manhi, (sounds like money,) they are singing more, more, more. Thanks for your reaction to this great song/MV. BTS is all about the lyrics in most of their songs. That is what attracted a lot of their fans and created one of the largest fanbases in the world. They don't focus on sappy love songs and a lot of their music speaks to people who are experiencing bullying, mental health issues such as social anxiety and depression, loneliness, lack of self love, or just questioning themselves. Some of their music is quite deep and I personally love that. It is far from run of the mill and since I grew up with the Beatles and eventually got stuck on the same old classic rock songs, I am happy to learn about something different. Thanks again. I recommend "Mic Drop" Steve Aoki remix, and "ON Kinetic Manifesto film". I enjoyed your reaction! 💜

I didn’t stop loving the Beatles and the classic rock I grew up with just because I found BTS. They had some deep songs, too. Hopefully the way your comment came across to me into what you meant.

@@Imme_begin I didn't "stop loving" the Beatles or any of the classic rock I grew up with. But, I am more than happy to have something new to listen to. I personally consider the depth of BTS lyrics to be on a different level and I appreciate it. These are different times.
I have my playlists and the Beatles still get a lot of play.
P.S. You are talking to someone who sat with her 3 girlfriends at the theater and we screamed our heads off from the beginning to the end of "A Hard Day's Night"!!! 💜😁💜

Gosh, this is the song that made me into an ARMY. Also, I feel like it went sort of viral at the time...there's are whole bunch of individual films that led to the release of this song that follows the BU universe. Also the WINGS album (which this song is from) is an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE. Probably one of my favorite albums of theirs.

I'd suggest reading the lyrics before or after watching the MV. They are deep and meaningful. That's why we love BTS! Good rhythms, good lyrics, good voices, good dancing, and, why not, good visuals 😅
I think other Armys told you already about Hermann Hesse's Demian..
Thanks for your reaction! What's next? 😂😂

Bts is not kpop nor some random pop singer. Their songs are appreciated because of their depth. While the melody can draw you in the meaning solidifies your interest in them. They are not just another pop group.

I understand what you are saying, but they actually are K-Pop. They are just on a different level than most. Even JK told a Suga in Suchwita that he is proud to be a K-Pop idol, (or singer). I don’t recall the exact translated word. 😊

I agree that I used to listen to music without thinking about the lyrics, just vibing to the music. It is because most music in the West is about the same old same old, no need to look at the lyrics. But I strongly urge you to take some time before or after the reaction if you prefer not to show it in the reaction. For instance, RM, the leader of the group, is a poet, Suga writes raw and emotional lyrics too. All members write and they are personal stories. Also they have a fictional storyline that runs through many songs across multiple albums. This is called the Bangtan Universe or BU. Each set of EPs/albums has a theme. For example, Map of the Soul Persona and Map of the Soul 7 explore Jungian concepts of Persona, Shadow and Ego so the songs in the albums tell the journey of exploring themselves and accepting all parts of themselves. The lyrics are either deep, meaningful or help others through difficult times. One of my favourites is Zero O'clock. RM writes about how at midnight the world takes a breath and a new day starts. No matter how bad the day is we start a new day and we can right wrongs, fix problems etc and it will be better.
This song was based on a book called Demian by Herman Hesse. He writes about how to become an adult you have to explore dark and painful experiences but once seen they cannot be unseen, and you can't return to the innocence of youth.

Okay, so this is gonna be a long comment so bear with me!
“Blood Sweat & Tears” is the title track of one of their albums called “WINGS” (2016). This particular song and entire album uses a plethora of references that link to one book: “Demian” by german writer Hermann Hesse. This book tells the story of a young boy named Emil Sinclair and his childhood growing up during pre-World War I. He struggles to find his new self-knowledge in the immoral world and is caught between good and evil. Already we have some clues as to what this song/MV is about: the battle between good and evil and temptation.
The video opens up with the members in a museum; notice how every member have symbols of innocence, such as a bike or slingshot; also each younger member is paired with an older member, their “mentor”, refferencing “Demian”. Jin, the oldest member, stands alone. He is gazing at the painting called “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” by Peter Bruegel the Elder. (good angels fighting Lucifer/evil angels fallen from Heaven). He is about to begin his journey towards adulthood and finding his true self and identity. On the left&right, there is a white and a black door, which represent the paths Jin can go on: the good side and the evil side.
Now, If you notice at 3:22, Jungkook is on a swing, and behind him is the painting called “The Lament for Icarus” by Herbert James Draper. Jungkook is representing Icarus troughout the whole video. (V also represents Icarus but in a different form). The swing could represent Icarus being safe, the Icarus following orders (he is supported by a swing). Later we see a drop of wax dripping on JK’s finger (4:21). This is a representation of the fall of Icarus and foreshadows what will happen to him later in the video. The painting in the back also foreshadows his death.
At 5:32, V is representing Icarus but also a fallen angel (this scene can also symbolize the fall of Lucifer: he rebelled against God and fell from grace, tempting more angels to do so in the process, thus connecting to the painting at the beggining “The Fall of the Rebel Angels”, maybe this is why he smirks after he falls down the balcony). Behind him we see the painting “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. This scene represents the death of Icarus (he ignored his father’s warning about flying too close to the sun, until the wax that kept his wings attached to his body melted…and he falls to his death-again we have the theme of temptation-Icarus falling to temptation). But…at 5:49/5:56 we see Jungkook again, but this time he is floating. He in this scene is dead, and him floating represents how Icarus started “floating” in the water after he drowned, connecting V’s and JK’s scenes. We also see feathers floating around and on the floor as well (being underwater). So the whole Icarus imagery in this MV comes in like this: stage 1: We see JK on the swing, Icarus being alive; stage 2: V/Icarus falls off the balcony; stage 3: The painting in the background (“Landscape with the Fall of Icarus”) foreshadows JK/Icarus when he is floating/drowned (him being dead/underwater); stage 3: the painting behind JK (“The Lament for Icarus”) foreshadows V/Icarus having no wings on anymore which is the final stage.
Now, the kissing scene. (BTW, RM is reading a paragraph from “Demian” at 6:19, if you didn’t read the book, you will not get it; also, this scene portrays Jin letting go of the balloon. This can represent him letting go of his childhood innocence, his youth and moving into adulthood) During the interlude of the MV, all the members run towards the exit except for Jin and V. If you notice, Jin has a very confused and scared look on his face while V blindfolds him with his hands. After that, a white statue with black wings appears: this statue represents the god Abraxas-the deity is a representation of good and evil, it is not good or evil, it is both (good and evil into the same word). After that, Jin walks closer to it, takes a look at it then kisses it. This scene represents how Jin has finally embraced both good and evil into himself (by kissing Abraxas), thus destroying the world of innocence he has lived in prior to this. We then see V with his wings cut off, giving a smile to the camera (him smiling could symbolize that Jin’s growth is complete, and he finally accepted chaos into himself which leads to self betterment-theory of Carl Jung: accepting your shadow). Again, Icarus but also a fallen angel. So this whole MV is revolving around Jin most of the time, he is the main protagonist of this MV (his path to adulthood, maturity and acceptance of an evil realm). The quote above the mirror at 7:59 is written in German (belonging to philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche) and translates as: You need to have chaos in yourself in order to give birth to a dancing star” basically meaning that if you don’t accept chaos (evil) into yourself, you will not be able to grow to your full potential. At the end of the MV we see the old version of Jin, the one that was pure and innocent cracking, there is no chaos in him and so he cannot give birth to the dancing star.
Other scenes that further strenghten the overall theme of the MV include 4:01, 4:44, a “Last Supper” kind of setting in which all the members have an apple and a chalice, both signs of temptation; 5:28, again, a blindfold and an apple and so on.
There is so much I didn’t say here, you’ll have to watch the explanation on RUclips to trully understand how everything connects because trust me, this whole thing is cohesive and connects, I just told you the main things of this MV but not specifically how everything connects! I look forward to your next reaction, maybe the introduction to the 7 members by Taylor Nakamoto will be great! Cheers! 💜

Tackling BS&T as your 4th BTS video is quite ambitious. In a year you'll look back at this and see a whole different MV. I don't read the words on the first go around. I find them distracting. There's plenty of time to read it but only one first chance to watch it and focus on the sound - not the words. I love your enthusiasm - it's great to see the purple light dawn in your faces.

Yeah - lots of folks just plan to watch twice, or study the lyrics first - because it's too much to catch everything in one pass. I'm a words first person, not music first, but I do want to absorb both. 😂
And this one is too much to catch in ten viewings 🤣🤣🤣

It starts with Jin looking at the painting ov the fall ofthe rebel angels. On fhe sides of the painting you can notice a black door and a white door. Representing good and evil. The story line comes from the book "damion". It's about the temptation between good and evil. Jungkook floating is like icarus floating to close to the sun. The quote the way read during the pause was from the book. Jin kissing the statue is him giving in to temptation. But the aftermath of giving leads to chaos. V Representing the fallen angel. There is explanation video for this video as well as a dance practice and a video sketch. All of bts videos have a story line and the songs themselves have meaning to them. I would suggest starting at the beginning with No more dream and working up and the documentary "guide to bts: the bangtan 7"

This type of music that is introspective, deep, relevant, and relatable is what BTS is known for that locals/non-fans don’t know about because they haven’t checked out their work, and it so happens to be put to bangin’ music at the same time lol. For BS&T, one can write a dissertation or teach a class on the mv and lyrics.

Lyrics are important though. I understand it's a distraction when the mv has so much to offer. But if melody is everything, the entire k-pop might have been considered great, which is not the case. They might be saying bunch of bs but BC the beats n melodies r good ,ppl often love those groups (w/o reading the lyrics) but I get it what you mean. Lol I read the lyrics later after I watch the mv. But ofcourse you don't have all day free so it's impossible for you guys but thank you. We appreciate your reaction to BTS

They are unique from Kpop or anything really, just plain superstars in their own genre. A few songs have actual explanation vids to understand. Honestly, I am not too sure exactly what the lyrics are exactly about. But this was how I felt when I heard the song. The boys met the devil and the temptation was too hard to resist. I think this is symbolizing the toxic love relationship OR greed of human in general. The part they say want it more more more. This made me think about how in toxic relationship, you are trying so hard to get away but many return back to the relationship. They are desperately craving for the love that are deserve from their partner. They are trying with all of their blood tears sweat soul and body, basically all they have. But you are not getting any love back so you just want it more and more. Also, same goes with human greed. People basically die trying and sometimes they even sell their souls to devil for what they want (talent, money, fame, success etc). That was how I interpret it

It’s heavier…they are introducing Nietzsche, Damien by Herman Hess, and Dr. Carl Jung. Every prop in there has meaning. They speak in symbolism. They are not representative of K-pop. No one in K-pop does this. In fact, “K-pop” tried to kill them off. They don’t belong to the “big 3” labels. They are under BigHit. When K-pop couldn’t kill them, they jumped on BTS coat tails. Now everybody copying them.

I got so excited for this reaction and you guys were quick to pick up that one of the members was a fallen angel AND the fact that one of you picked up on that the portrait was the battle in heaven between good and evil. BTS love to make ARMY into Sherlock Holmes with all their hints and clues. Did you notice on each side of that painting was a black door and a white door...a choice to make. Also, the member that played the fallen angel, V...was out to tempt them with their hearts desires. Many miss the fact that they are not in a museum but are in fact in Vs home. He is dressed in rich man's "lounge ware" while the others are in there casual dress clothes. Dance moves that included covering their ears, eyes, mouth..."see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". Just to point out a few things, there are so many more nuances.
Working hard to be successful and do something meaningful...or allow yourself to be tempted and accept fame, fortune and all that but losing your soul in the process?
Even though this was based on a book, they have a way of structuring their songs and meanings to stand alone, even though you may not know it's based on a book. Make sense. They are great story tellers.
Might I suggest Spring Day mv and the Spring Day Explained video.

I think this is quite a heavy BTS song for beginners, did someone recommend it to you? Can I suggest So What for something lighter, or their first number from 10 years ago No More Dream. Or if you like to hear rap listen to Mic Drop Steve Aoki Remix

You can read the lyrics before or after watching a video. BTS is appreciated a lot for their message, the lyricism. So if you “don’t care about the lyrics” you are really missing out what this group means to people around the world. Seems like you are not really Interested in the music are doing this for followers
