Seagulls make a right mess of our loft extension windows. I've been searching for ways to do this, looking at angled brushes, long brushes. You would think that velux would have a video on their website or the windows would come with instructions BUT NO. Thank you Simon for your very helpful video. Now I know thanks to you.
Oh my g…, even watching your video I thought this can’t be right for my windows. iPad in hand I went to follow your instructions and hey presto it worked. My windows are top hung with no sign of the centre pivot until you pull the window in and down. It was a bit daunting pulling the top downwards and I was hoping it would all go back and be waterproof again. Thank you so much I now have 3 clean windows, no more peering through the green that was accumulating. Easy to follow and effective, brilliant, no more trying to reach round all the edges.
Well done Simon. We moved to a house which had centre and top hung Velux windows. I thought the vent should release the top hung window and allow it to rotate, so I pulled the vent but nothing happened. Your video game me the confidence to give it a hard tug - and hey presto it worked. I now have clean Velux windows. Cheers Simon.
Thank you! I'm 3 years in a new build and I've been precariously propping my top hung velux. Now to find the slide bolts. My problem is the the wretched thing is directly at the top of the stairs so steps are out and long shafted squeegees are in.
Thanks Simon, We've just installed top hung Velux windows and was also surprised at the lack of detail in the cleaning section of the Velux maintenance page on their website, so your demo has given us the confidence to swing it through 180 degrees. We were stopping at 90 degrees worrying the whole unit was going to drop out!! No longer have to look at the bird pooh, yey!
Simon. Thank you for this!! I have not been able to properly clean the Velux top hung windows since we moved in to our house. So simple now👍 Thanks again!
This is great thanks. I would add, if you have an electrically operated one, you need to release the chain to get it to pivot. I just did it and it's easy. Unclip the little plastic clip covering the chain attachment to the frame and the chain comes free. After, the chain slides back into place and close the plastic clip.
'Leap of faith' indeed to pull down on that top handle ! For clarity, on our (older-style) GHL window you have to kind of pull down and rotate that handle forward, away from you (rather than just pulling straight down on it). Is it normal to have a foam rubber under the top handle ? On our window that foam pad had welded itself to the window which is why we never realised the handle was movable !? We had to break the (previously) sealed-shut foam pad in order to open the handle.
I replaced one of my window frames last year as the blind was damaged. I'm sure the newer designs don't have this feature - the swivel is only about 6" from the top of the frame, i.e. it allows the frame to swig open, but that's about it? It seems?
I don't understand why they're called top hung, mine's exactly the same and it piviots from the middle. I wouldn't dream of giving it a good yank and the whole frame falling into my room. I'm going to try a long brush.
Hi Lee, I know it looks like a centre pivot Velux, but it isn't. The clever people at Velux have provided a temporary use central pivot mechanism to allow top hung windows to be cleaned from the inside of the building. You have to pull the top lever down through an additional stop to disconnect the top hinge and activate the temporary centre pivot for cleaning purposes only.

Thank you so much Simon!
I was puzzled about how to clean the outside part of my top-hung Velux. I can now enjoy a moss-free view from my bedroom :)
Omg after 3 years of reaching with my lanky long arms around the window to clean them, this is a game changer 🤣🤣
Thank you
LOL. It"s a pleasure

Thank u, Simon. You just saved me from concussion & a five hour wait in A&E!

Thanks for giving me the confidence to yank on the top handle 😂 I'm in rented accommodation and I didn't want to accidentally break it
i didn't even realise mine opened until today, I moved in last August 😂

Not a top hung,that's a center pivot

Great additional tip. Thanks
My jaw was on the FLOOR... I've had this type of window for so long and never knew!!!
I’ve been searching for info like this for years! Thank-you!
Brilliant - thank you! Was concerned that it might not be possible from the inside, so this is great.
Thanks for posting that. The manufacturer's instructions are useless. Thanks again.
Holy crap this just saved me an hour of arm reaching pain thank you so much
Such a helpful video, this gave us the confidence to choose this type of window. Thank you, Simon!
You've just made me feel better about cleaning the top hung double I've just ordered 😅
God I searched for this video like hours. Thank you man! ❤😂🎉😂😂❤
Thank you have been trying to work it out for years, easy when you know how, many thanks.

I think the foam pad is replaceable. look at velux site for details.
🤣😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
i just clean mines before watching this video☹🤨🙃😖😤🤦🏾♂️i didnt know 🤷🏿♂️
I'll be definitely doing it your way next time 😏 thank you 🙏🏾
Hi just wondering what you use to clean the wooden frames?
That's great to know.
I'm about to get some velux windows installed and was curious what size the ones in this video are, thanks.

This is amazing, never knew this. Thanks for the tip!
You are a god among men, sir 👍🏻
I’m terrified of doing this in case the whole thing falls out.
Top work Simon!!
OMG I didn’t know that! Thank you very much!
You bloody legend. Thanks
Brilliant, thank you for a great video....I now have clean windows😂
Cheers! Thank you
🎉 Thank you for this video!!
This was super helpful thanks so much!!
What about the old fashioned windows which don't give you this option?
Thank you! I wish Velux would have such a clear instructions on how to do this. Their info is rubbish!
I don't understand why they're called top hung, mine's exactly the same and it piviots from the middle. I wouldn't dream of giving it a good yank and the whole frame falling into my room. I'm going to try a long brush.
My problem is my velux window is high above kitchen. It also has 2 sheets ofglass os what is dirty is in between the glass so i cant clean it.
Can you do this on fixed velux windows?
Shouldn't you release the springs first?
thanks si very helpful
Does the window need to be open a bit first?
You need to unlock the main handle else it won't pivot, but the window doesn't need to be open
I know how to fix window. But when you clean window, and turn water leaks down... Can you make a video til end? 😀
Thankyou!
I got a feeling mine does not open at all, probably owners sealed all windows
thats not top hung

Yes it is top hung, mine is identical, but they have a hidden centre pivot as he demonstrates. It's a clever design.
These are centre pivot not top hung!!!!
its top hung when using the bottom bar and then becomes centre pivot when using the top bar.
It has two hinges, the main at the top and the hidden centre pivot for cleaning.
