The best part of Lament that no one talks about is how dark, lonely, and atmospheric it is. It’s supposed to be the genesis of Castlevania… it feels old, ancient, otherworldly. Like connected to an ancient time before Dracula. Also, the soundtrack is some of Yamane’s best work ever, also the dvd format (another first for Castlevania) was amazing for the audio and score. Not unlike the audio jump from Super Castlevania (snes/cartridge)to Symphony(CD/playstation).
Curse (the follow up) is the better game overall. But there’s something about Lament.

This game was my childhood and probably one of my top 10 for sure. What's cool to is that if you watch the Netflix series there's a shout out to Leon for being the first Belmont to hunt monsters and founder. I just thought it was awesome they kept this with the time line.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I am glad you are reviewing this game. I found it to be pretty good, had some neat lore for the world of Castlevania, and sometimes I could really get into it, thanks in part to some of the music. I did miss the 2D level design though, there weren't a lot of pits compared to other titles. I will be looking forward to watching your video when I have time to do so. I wonder how accurate my memory of the game is… I haven't played it in about 15 years.

Loved the game. Never played Devil May Cry but I believe that was the real reason this wasn't appreciated more. If you like Castlevania this was awesome when it came out.

I really do enjoy this game but I have to admit it does suffer from some very glaring issues. Probably the most obvious is the very similar backgrounds and level layouts. I'm also not a fan of the fact let this game has no pits. I'm not saying that the pits should lead to instant death but there's a way you can do platforming where you can suffer fall damage while also hindering the player's progress while not killing them off with a one shot hit. I know there's a lot of people that don't like that type of gaming. Put in the case of this series I think it adds a bit of extra tension. After all the castle is a creature of chaos and it's supposed to be daunting and dangerous. After all this simile sentient and living force is trying to ward off Invaders to protect its master. Tension equals drama.
A couple of the other things I don't care about is the double jump which should have been a wall jump as well as the whip grapple mechanic which looks very jank. Is Leon had a proper rope swing with that mechanic it would have looked so much better. Development time and budget what can you do.
But with that said I enjoyed the combo system with the orbs and it never ceases to amaze me the ability of musicians to perfectly seamlessly match the music with the visuals. I don't know if Mitchiru yamane has ever scored films but if she has you would be interesting to see how she matches her music with those visuals. Shemales that just like any other great music composer and that stuff never ceases to blow my mind.

I love the Lore of Lament o.I. I realy liked it back then, but Curse of Darkness beats it by far.
I saw this as a 3D Classic Castlevania and Curse is more Symphony 3D😅.

Good review! The camera sure makes some parts way harder than they needed to be. I remember enjoying it despite its flaws, and I liked the challenging surprises of the hard mode.
Have you ever played Curse of Darkness?

I haven't had the chance yet to play Curse of Darkness. It's one of the only games in the series that I still need to play.

Your only valid critiques are the voice acting (which is easily remedied by switching to the superior subtitles/japanese voice acting) and the camera, but honestly there is very little platforming in this game. That dark room platforming section at the end should've definitely been removed though.

There was one after this with a character called Hector and I thought it was much better

Curse of Darkness is one of the Castlevania games that I still need to play, so it's good to hear that it might be the better game.

I just recently found a copy of the Xbox version of Curse of Darkness, but haven't had a chance to play it yet. I'm planning to get to it pretty soon.
