I appreciate you!!! I wished so many other young men would see that AC jobs are cool!!! We need yall!!!!!! My air is not cooling as we speak and the AC repair guy is coming Monday to look at it.
It is such a nice feeling to see the customers face when you can complete a job within the scope of their hopes... hard to drop $2000 on a new compressor these days and the gratification is worth it... nice job sir
Thanks for being honest. I had a 27+ year old unit. Worked better than my four year old Comfortmaker. I've spent about $2200 on it so far! Parts are covered but not labor! Replaced the condenser and capacitor and thermostat! The company that I bought it from called it a moneytaker!
clean the coil first before adding refrigerant. Clean the coil by spraying from the inside out. That way you do not impact the material further into the coil.
Very good video. I like seeing what to expect when the A/C guy comes out and checks my unit. I need to do that, because it's hot in Houston and A/C is not cooling as well as it should. Thanks.
Easy day life is good! Not bad brother you got your shit together, nice 👍 tools. Down here In Houston it’s so hot during the heatwaves just a dirty coil like what you had makes the house hang at 78 - 80 degrees in the hottest part of the day. Good job 👏 that was good service.
Correct fix is clean coil 1st with coil cleaner. 2d take pressure of both lines. Then add refrigerant to proper specifications. Maybe even check back in a few weeks for recheck of system.
You shouldnt use stream from a hose on condencer coils. You will bend the fins and reduce air flow. If you mix your nubrite cleaner 4-1 spray it in on both sides of coil and let sit for no longer than 5 mins you only need to use the fan setting on sprayer to easily clean out any blockage, and if it dosent you repeat untill clean. No fin damage.
Hi.I want to ruin it, not to repair it ... I have a neighbor who doesn't want to move it to the house and it's right next to my terrace and makes a lot of noise.. Please help me
Lol I do hvac in houston and I cant tell you how many times I take that cover off and the coil closest to the compressor is blocked off and the rest is some what clean.
There are missing info in here. What's ballpark for a repair like this? I asked because it would be nice for customers to know what to expect to pay saves them from being ripped off I guess.
hvac Tech 100 isnt cheap lol. Its already a $200 service call just for 1 pound. 😅 a system usually needs more then 1 pound if its acting a little more strange then just running a little more often which people usually dont notice 8/10 times
R cooler fan motor went out and in our small town no AC business would answer their phones. Live in N. AZ. Tried everywhere. Some1 was suppose to show 2morrow. But I got on internet and found a motor ordered it n it came- 2 days. My Fren is electrician and wired it for me. 👍 b4 motor came we had to go out and spray with hose, hubbie placed a fan w/cord inside there and continuously have it on. 7 days.
Hey bro I was wonder what can causes a very low amount of cold air delta t, when I cleaned the evaporator coil outdoor coil and the pressures look great on my gauges idk what’s going on here
Stupid is as stupid does ! I always face the mower away from the house just to keep wet grass from sticking to the siding, requiring additional cleanup.
assuming the leak doesn’t get any worse, how long would that charge you just put in last? I never understood how if leaking can it hold a gas for more than a few days, can someone explain?
I agree with Gene, sometimes the leaks are a fracture that leak over a long period, were some are large fractures or holes that leak quickly. if you add gas more then once, you have a leak and must find it.
SuperRobkar Microscopic leaks that can take months to leak out are permitted by the EPA when it’s less than 35% of the total system charge plus if there’s no history of adding refrigerant then you have to have a starting point to justify condemning a piece of equipment. He did right a couple pounds ain’t shit if it last till next season she’s fine. Me I would have sold here a new system for about 8 to 10 thousand. Trust me she got off easy.
1) tech should ask why a sealed system is leaking. 2) this guy never bothered to spray down the valve cores to see if they are leaking 3) i did not see this guy extract the charge and pressurize the system with nitrogen to prove a viable system. 4) high marks for making money. 5) overall a hack and i'd fire him.
Ted serious question, do you recover and pressurize a system with nitro every time you have a unit that is low on charge? Why not charge the system and add fluorescent leak sealer so if leak sealer fails you can locate leak with the dye?
I would have no problem extending the system life if the leak is "microscopic" and in the mean time tell the owner to start putting money aside for a new one.
a cooler condenser = higher subcooling not the other way around, and it will drop your superheat. decent service call overall, I would've done the same thing, it's better than where you left it. I know guys say you should've went from the inside out, taking out the motor and grill but I would price that extra for the time and labor. What you did was just fine. Tell the lady she has a leak and if you find yourself coming back within 3 months I would price for a leak check and repair.
terrible bmx a cool condenser would run a low subcool because the txv is metering based off condenser temp but if the house has a high load it would quickly heat the outdoor coil and raise the pressure since it didn’t it’s obvious it was low
Patrick Murphy condenser temperature or suction temperature for the txv ? The bulb should be on the suction and depending on the load temp back to the compressor it would open or close and on low gas it would open due to high superheat and your right i think, cause if the txv is fully open feeding the evap it would drop cond. Press/temp. Maybe im overthinking it but thanks lol
terrible bmx yeah because the txv is reading discharge into evaporater that’s why the subcool is done at condenser it reads suction but that doesn’t really dictate its position since it’s supposed to maintain a consistent superheat a cooler condenser would fool the txv to staying slightly open then when pressure/temp increase on the discharge it would open full bore
Yup those units for whatever reason get very dirty in that area . The sides probably weren't that bad and the hose did the trick . It's better than doing nothing like most guys would of been lazy and just charged it up and would of over charged cause it was dirty. Good job my friend and I hope your truck gets back on the road soon for ya .
Grass clippings. They should have the unit raised up on a pad or mulch around it so the grass isn't right there. Every time you mow the lawn the mower shoots clippings right into the unit.
Even with a pad, nothing near it for 15ft and some buffer gravel around the pad, I have to clean ours 2x a year. Just fills with grass and fuzzy plant crap.

Nice job. I tell ya what, those Rheem and RUUD units are a PITA to take apart and put back together. Especially when the unit is placed that close to the house.
The high efficiency pleated air filters restrict about 500 cfm or about 1 ton of air flow even if new. I like coil cleaning solution, the foamy type with mild acidic action. The grasshopper wanted some liquid refrigerant.
I see all what you did, but did you look for the leak. do you know you are allowed to charge only one time and try to find the leak, then approach to the home owner with a solution to repair or replace the system. specially when you are charging R-22.
Can the same thing be done with an A/C wall unit? I have to turn the temp control knob to the max now to get it to work well. I believe this unit is more than 10 thousand BTU and if I can save 500 bucks to clean this one, it'll be a lot more economic to clean this one. It's more than 15 years old. Thanks.
Would you know why one room is always hot even if you keep the door open. Also why does the vent furthest from the main unit emit more air than one that's closer to the main unit
Might be the ducting closer in is narrower. On a straight six engine you can clearly see by looking at the intake manifold how the tunnels running to the two innermost cylinders are skinnier than the progressively larger farther away from the carburetor or throttle body ones are otherwise the two closest cylinders would get much more flow than the outlying ones. Check your ducts, as best you can, for diameter. You can't see a duct where it is in the wall but pulling the outlet covers can help determine duct size as well as looking at where they emerge from on the blower. . A simple fix might be to partially close down the vents getting all the extra air.
Well done champ,, i herd that they have some real great better gas, which is better than the normal gas used these days and its a direct replacement for some older A/C condensers and gases, cant remember which number it was but i think its about 4 to 5 degrees colder than current gases used in home and car a/c units, like the R34 gases, cheers i hope they older units are keeping you busy . :)
Gotta love those older model Rheem/Ruud condensers. I swear they run forever. My dad's was 1994 model before I replaced it but it was because of an air handler leak. Reinstalled it used in my cousin's rent house and it's still going. I think the only issue it's ever had was a leak in the accumulator which was a $70.00 fix.
Hey Steve! I enjoyed the video. How much was your psycrometer and that smart guage system you were using? Those would be very helpful in doing tech work. Thanks for the video.
Its a temp probe. Takes temp of pipe so we can check the superheat and subcool of a system by comparing the readings to a pressure/temp chart (gauges have the chart built into them)
I would think it would be good practice to weigh the bottle before just in case you lost some in-between the last job and now so you aren't charging someone for your lost gas
Hey Steve, I have a question for you. I know you don't work on automotive a/c but I had a truck come in and it was not cooling out of either evaporator core. The ambient temp was about 70 degrees and the pressures were spot on compared to a r134a chart I believe low side was around 35-37 psi and high side was 150 psi. Truck had just had the orifice tube, compressor, and dryer replaced by another shop. The high side lines were hot to the touch and the low side lines were very cold but not frosting over. The temps coming out of the vents were just below ambient temp by a degree or 2 and the temp on the evaporators was ambient temp. Temperature blend doors were working correctly as well. I'm usually pretty decent with a/c on these trucks but this one had me baffled.
Sounds like the blend door is bad. I have seen the door arms break internally. Take the actuator loose and make sure it moves by hand. Give me the year, model, make and I can maybe help you more.
How about the little radiator that the airflow takes cold from ? Older cars don't have the filter for cabin air and I'm sure fine dust gets in and adheres to the fins especially with condensation present.
When using scales doing the whole adding and subtracting thing takes too long and its accuracy will be a little diminished. Instead, this is what I do, start by putting the jug on, then turning the scale on, this will automatically zero the scale. Once it says 0 hook your hose up and fill as normal, upside down if 410a of course. When your done close off the jug, dump any remaining refrigerant back into the system as usual, then remove your hoses from your jug. The number on your scale now is the amount of refrigerant you have just used. Quicker, easier, and more accurate.
I need help with this situation. My system still works but after the condenser coils were cleaned the air seems to be coming out warmer than it was before. What could this be?
Best way to clean that unit? I remove the top, the fan and guard after shutting off the power to the unit, to prevent injury or shock. Wash the unit out with water from the inside spraying outward, then wash away all the debris on the outside. You can take a shop vac at the beginning and suck up all the debris in the electrical box, watch out for the spiders. hahahaha. Make sure you clean out the unit several times a year spring, summer and fall. It will improve the performance greatly and take stress off the unit. Just thought some would be interested.
Holy shit! A couple times a year?? I'm about to do this to my unit. First time in 18yrs. It's not getting the house below 78° anymore. I am doing it the way you described. But I'd rather all those spiders jump on me and bite bite bite than clean this damn thing even once a year! May as well run around cooling myself with a folded up paper fan.
Yea just make sure you got the power off to prevent injury. Vacuum out, and then wash em out. Several times a year, save alot of energy costs, and break downs.
Your right though i dont think its really necessary to do more then once a year unless the guy mowing your lawn doesnt know to shoot the grass away from the unit or your dryer vent is piped right to the coil lol. I have seen this but for the most part, no.
just a FYI for everyone reading this - it don't always have to be the coils outside of your house , it could be the coils inside your house from poor filter maintenance and/or poor filters in themselves ... more common than one would think. all the cold liquid in the furnace aint gonna do much good if the coils inside the house cant breath enough to absorb the heat from air you want cooled ...
yep, i have g20 Lennox furnace with air and I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get a look at mine and still be able to put everything back together when I'm done ...
AnyWho not sure what a g20 is but if you have a return plenum to cut a pumpkin hole into thats probably the best way. I live in florida so we dont exectly have a "furnace", we have air handlers with resistance heat. Hopefully i helped or gave an idea 👌
you did, I'm just not sure how the coil is set up inside. i mean if its one straight radiator like thing simply positioned at a slant so condensate runs to one side or or if it's more like a A-frame set up (I'm assuming that A-frame is for larger applications, my unit only covers like 1100 sq foot of heating/cooling space or so). i know my refrigeration lines and condensate lines all come in from the front of coiled section so I'm guessing if i used a Dremel or something to cut a hole in back side of section, that would be good enough for me to get in there? then just get something cover access hole after wards? .... my coils sit between furnace and duct-work with air flowing upwards to rest of duct-work ... thx for your input :)
I know the ice cream truck isn't back in service, because the video starts off too quiet! Great job Steve. Almost 60 degrees of superheat, she needed a charge for sure.
I won’t lie I feel horrible when I have to charge someone for taking their hose and water And hosing down the unit.even if I don’t do the actual hosing,I still have to trip charge them, i wish I didn’t but it’s not my company 🤷🏻♂️
I dont get what you posted here and im in residential/light commercial service. Lol. Edit: if your saying thats what most service calls are for the average tech, most of mine are drain lines or capacitors.
Yeah for splits or ptacs that is the case a lot until Friday at 3:30 then you always find the wackiest issues that take forever to trouble shoot and fix like a clogged filter drier
I appreciate you!!! I wished so many other young men would see that AC jobs are cool!!! We need yall!!!!!! My air is not cooling as we speak and the AC repair guy is coming Monday to look at it.

Shut it off!
clean the coil first before adding refrigerant. Clean the coil by spraying from the inside out. That way you do not impact the material further into the coil.
Dewitt Archibald
Your procedure is the correct way DeWitt, not the video's.
Turn unit off while cleaning
How do you clean from the inside outward?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
By simply taking out the fan motor
Never do that. Do it as the video shows.
To cool my house for me and my pups! 100 degrees outside 77 insideThank you Amazon and thank you UPS!!!
I hose mine down from the inside out, because that's the opposite direction from how the debris gets in.
Makes sense

Good point ! I use a spray cleaner after manually removing debris and use the hose at a minimum of pressure so as not to bend the fins.

Most A/C technicians won't recharge the system if it's leaking until the leak gets fixed, due to the fact that refrigerant is bad for the environment.

Its like $600 for a set like that... if you think thats worth it i seen him post a link in one of the top comments.
Consistent maintenance on the air conditioning unit can save money in terms of service calls and less issues
careful with higher pressure from a nozzle, you can bend those fins, and that won't help your problem,

Rustifer , yes, nice expensive and they break a lot, simple manifold set and meter with temp clamp does great
Its a temp probe. Takes temp of pipe so we can check the superheat and subcool of a system by comparing the readings to a pressure/temp chart (gauges have the chart built into them)
If it is leaking wont you just be back to charge it again?
$$$$
Just kidding. I usually add a leak sealer but that's up to the customer in the end
Leak sealer only works on o-rings. Is that what is usually causing gas loss?
lots of times it's a slow leak that will last the entire season. Not worth fixing yet ...

The number on your scale now is the amount of refrigerant you have just used. Quicker, easier, and more accurate.
it's always a good idea to throw your grass clippings into your A/C unit
that's the Green New Deal
That grass hopper was Alpha AF!!!!
I need help with this situation. My system still works but after the condenser coils were cleaned the air seems to be coming out warmer than it was before. What could this be?
Did you figure out the issue?
If it is the outside unit that was meant than that is good!
Does the grasshopper work for you is he your watch Hopper dose he keeps an eye out for danger.
He's a grasshopper in a refer mine !
Great reviews
great job mama !!! ;D
i've seen that grasshopper in another video - he's a superfan mama!
Enjoyed your informative video! Loved the little Kung Fu expert, at the end. "Grasshopper".
If its better.to.take the cabinet off when spraying and shes paying u then u should have taken it off lol
What's happened to the truck?
interesting ....how was it done in the old days without the smart technology Steve?
May as well run around cooling myself with a folded up paper fan.
snakeryan master just did a few Rheem units same set up. 3 pieces. Comp cover, fan, 3 side conds. Cover. Very good for cleaning?
Yea just make sure you got the power off to prevent injury. Vacuum out, and then wash em out. Several times a year, save alot of energy costs, and break downs.
If you do it yourself otherwise you’d spend 400 having a company do that thorough of a job
Your right though i dont think its really necessary to do more then once a year unless the guy mowing your lawn doesnt know to shoot the grass away from the unit or your dryer vent is piped right to the coil lol. I have seen this but for the most part, no.
Damn turbo seal is keeping your truck in the shop! That ain’t right!
I think he needs a new mechanic. This guy always takes a long time.
Grass Hopper looks like he's lost 😀👍
He inhaled some of the gas. hes pingin' hahahahah
just a FYI for everyone reading this - it don't always have to be the coils outside of your house , it could be the coils inside your house from poor filter maintenance and/or poor filters in themselves ... more common than one would think. all the cold liquid in the furnace aint gonna do much good if the coils inside the house cant breath enough to absorb the heat from air you want cooled ...
AnyWho sad part is so many are uncased coils nobody ever checks
yep, i have g20 Lennox furnace with air and I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get a look at mine and still be able to put everything back together when I'm done ...
AnyWho what kind of plenums do you have? (The ends coming off the 2 ends of the air handler made out of either duct board or metal)
Super cool has a app for the I phone you need to try it is even better than the slide rule.
I know the ice cream truck isn't back in service, because the video starts off too quiet! Great job Steve. Almost 60 degrees of superheat, she needed a charge for sure.
The cricket was the best part 🤓
What's a good hvac book to read
WooHoo - screenshotted, and off to fix the ac tomorrow. Thanks!
Just being a smartass. I cant afford that damn book.
1 Trillion Views dang well now you know :p
So instead of fixing the leak just put some Freon in it that always fix it until next year let another 2lb into the atmosphere great job.
Lol stfu
And never, never use a pressure washer the clean it. That will bend the fins for sure!
I won’t lie I feel horrible when I have to charge someone for taking their hose and water And hosing down the unit.even if I don’t do the actual hosing,I still have to trip charge them, i wish I didn’t but it’s not my company 🤷🏻♂️
Billyboy you like getting paid though don’t charge for what you do you charge for what you know
Patrick Murphy that makes sense.
But let me guess u dont feel bad to charge them alot. Lol im afraid to call way to expensive.
Modern day Super Hero
Im in hvac school. But most of the time its the filter or refrigerant. Not the contacters or transformer.
In residential you mean
Yeah. But on internships do we start off on apartment complex or hotels
Oh and not to mention most city water has chlorine which will oxidize the thin aluminum coils
That Grasshopper says its a little cooler over here.
