name ideas for the new half-blind rescue? I think mrs mustache suits her well :) 🥸
p.s. next fish restock is Nov 1st @ FishPortals.com! :)
MRS MUSTACHEE
Name her scar
Definitely scar
Sally
I love the name wink personally
The fact that you even detected a small detail of the missing eye on that fish just goes to show how much pure love and enthusiasm you have for fishes.
She detects them all with the vision of kindness
Always noticing the little things ☻
@@Fish4Everwhat is that smile emoji
Bruh why do i see you on every video 💀
Word
You should name her Ghost. She's pure white for the most part and her missing eye makes her a lil spooky, which is fitting for this season!
She might not be 'pure white' (unless she was specifically bred to be that color) for longer if she begins recover and continues to do so. Her color might come back. I have seen videos of stressed/maltreated fish who loose their colorful scales and after some much needed TLC regain their original color
Mustache Ghost
ghost
I would share a name with that fish then!
@@tiffanychan9627i think she is a peachy pink gal
I had a fishie who was born without one eye. His name was Pirate and he had a mustache as well. He was a cute goldfish
That’s absolutely sounds like the most perfect name for him I love it 🥰
Fish goes from plastic cup to something I would love to live in,you "i'm sorry for the mess"
As an ex petco worker, the fish are easily the most neglected creatures that exist in the store.
The snakes are horrible
As a rat owner, at my petco the cage sizes are fine. But the rats have absolutely no toys and the only thing they have are 2 plastic little igloo lookin things. They need places to climb, or hammocks to rest in. They look depressed and almost always have respiratory issues. Luckily, when I got my girls they had just arrived and hadn’t been exposed to the bedding that would give them issues, and now they’re about one and a half thriving. (You probably don’t care now that I think about it but whatever)
When I went to a petco to get my birds, I saw a conure in a really small cage where they could only turn around, and it had a chain toy. All the birds had no real food, just millet. Petco really mistreats there animals.
@@Apple.toast_ I care! Thanks for sharing 😊
When I used to go there I would see super crowded, empty tanks with the corpses of other fish still inside.
They way Betta's are treated in pet stores make me so sad they sit there for so long in the tiny little container and not taken care of properly
I used to work at a Petco, they get new water every day but it pissed me off that I wasn't allowed to change their water twice a day, and that corporate wouldn't let me put cuttings of elodea in their horrid little prisons to help with the water filtration and enrichment :( shop local fish stores y'all
@@violentabyssive seen pet stores throw them out still alive. i hate pet stores that treat their animals like stock
@@milkyeyez34what the hell? alive??
@@milkyeyez34 I never saw that happen where I work but I believe it. The animals are in such bad conditions they can be mistaken for dead. But they don't throw dead animals in the trash, there's a separate cold storage for dead bodies that get disposed of safely prevent spread of disease. If an animal is thrown away alive the person didn't see them in there. But yeah I believe it happens. :(
@@violentabyss I’ve seen a couple stores in my area put a bit of cuttings in theirs, hopefully for that reason too. Corporate pet stores are so depressing 😢
In Europe I think it’s illegal to keep fish in these conditions. They’re always in big tanks with other fish (usually taking up a whole wall) this is crazy! And sad :(
Betta fish can't be put with many other fish but you're definitely right they need more space. I get so sad seeing then at the store and here no one even realizes that's not enough space for them because the stores teach everyone they just need a tiny bowel to swim in :(
Yeah in Europe they usually get each their own 5-10gallon tanks. At least Ive seen it in every pet shop my city has. They are very well kept tanks too, with nice aquascaping etc. in my country it is illegal to keep them like shown in the above video(plastic containers)
@@ashleyx7454 They need flowing water - at the very least they could stick an airstone in their cups and change the water daily.
This is so sad, I'm glad you rescued her. ♥
"im gonna keep out a EYE for her" ..
I was litteraly coming to comment this lmao💀
She's Selener
HAHA I THOUGHT THE SAME
She already has an eye out!!! 😱
Ya no 🧢
The fact that pet stores do this to the fish
?? just simply being in the hobby makes us equally responsible because if we weren't buying them, they wouldn't need to mass produce them and ship them by the millions in packed bags leading to millions of them dying just from the stress of shipping alone. If only you could see the amount of fish that literally every pet store throws in the trash before you ever get to see them in the tanks when the store opens (some stores don't even bother to take the dead ones out when they're supposed to) This one fish isn't the big picture.
@@otallonoWhich is exactly why more regulation is required for fish sales, purchasing and keeping.
Still not a good idea to attack the workers, it's not their decision to put them into cups 😭 I'm a pet care worker and I spent hours opening and cleaning Betta fish cups today just to make sure they all stayed healthy my fingers are in IMMENSE pain
@vexayen1675
1. Aww your poor fingers. At least you're not stuck in 1 room that you breathe, shit and urinate in, with no way to open a window for at least fresh air, hey.
2. No one said anything about attacking the workers.
The other person meant something along the lines of as long as there are Beta Keepers buying or "rescuing" these fish, being kept in miserable conditions... the companies that order in, store and sell them in little plastic cups will continue.
Rescuing 1 ill looking Beta, won't change the conditions for the rest of them, still left on the shelf. Or those that will be ordered in to replace them.
A lot of these fish die due to keeping them like this, if not at the shop, when some goodwiller buys them at half price thinking they're going to try save them - but the fresh conditions happening too fast shocks them and they die anyway.
Then they're attracted to "make it right" for the passed "rescue".
So they ask questions in Facebook groups, do as much reading as they can absorb and prepare and prepare as well as they can (this is best scenario behaviour in their eyes),.. Two weeks later, they return to the shop and purchase another Beta in a cup - you know, in tribute to losing the first one they tried to save.
It's yet another perpetuation of the cycle.
At the end of the day, no living animal should be kept in such conditions.
It should be regulated/legislated to change this, wherever these cups of Beta are sold.
*Here in all the Victorian, Australia, aquarium shops, they have walls of Beta tanks. Very small tanks I grant you, but absolutely not a plastic cup, and they're all hooked up to their own filtering system where each tank has fresh turnover of water, automatically. They are fed, and kept a close eye on. As all fish should be.
Supermarkets should not be permitted to sell live animals, regardless.
Having said this, our pet shops no longer sell cats or dogs either. Our general pet shops only usually stock general fish (typical tropicals & goldfish), maybe hermit crabs, some basic reptiles with minor licenses required before purchases (higher knowledge licensed animals can usually be ordered in), rodents and birds.
Our pet shops, thankfully, will often have "useful Karen" monitoring them, their live stock and treatment.. and it's how we got our regulations changed.
We still have our back yard breeders, negligent owners with "oh no, another unexpected litter!", because they failed to have their chosen pet desexed - but for the most part, our pet purchasing practises have been extremely upgraded, compared to what they were when I was a kid.
I understand some wholesalers still transport Beta orders in cups.. but it's just laziness for a retailer to put them on a shelf for sale, in the same conditions.
Only way to demand better, is to stop purchasing them entirely, until change is made.
@@anti-victimGenX firstly relax, I'm but a broke 18 year old doing my best with the guidelines I've been given. Secondly the workers are not happy about the cups at all, they're a pain for us and it's way too small of a space to keep the fish in. We literally all agree with you.
I hope people realize when they “rescue” a pet from a pet store they allow that store to buy 2 more for the one you “rescued”/“saved”
Agreed
According to her, the fish was the only one that was potentially infected. Plus, would you rather to let the animals just suffer in there?
@@ToastallyManonMcMarringtonI’d rather it die and nobody buy it than support a big chain store as horrible as it sounds buying the 1 allows the company to buy 2 more and put them in that situation
And I hope you realize that if you don't rescue these poor animals they die a horrific death so even though their profiting off of these animals what matters the most is trying to rescue as many as we can so they don't die a very painful and horrific death your logic is wrong you're basically saying No this company sucks don't rescue any of their animals because they're just going to buy more honey regardless they're going to buy more if a fish dies they're going to buy another fish to replace it..
I mean come on stop being ridiculous don't get me wrong I understand what you're saying but you need to realize that if you get people to stop rescuing these animals then they really are going to die in a really bad way is that what you want are you okay with them dying like that?
If you are then you're the problem not people who rescued these animals that will die horrific death if we tell people what to do because without them these poor little fish would die a really sad death and they wouldn't matter to anybody so I'm sorry but you're Logic on this is wrong..
@@ToastallyManonMcMarringtondon't listen to that person they're wrong I get what they're saying but these fish will die a horrible death if someone doesn't rescue them this person is saying that just let the fish die that's not right plus if they do Let them Die they're just going to buy another one and then try and sell it so it's best to rescue these types of fish if they seem sick or something is just not right there's nothing wrong with people rescuing them just because people don't like the big company doesn't mean anything they're like well we're supporting the big company well I'm sorry but I definitely will pay to save that cute little fish it's more important then how I or anyone else feels about the big company saving an animal is always the right thing to do if that person doesn't realize it then they have a huge problem don't worry about people like that they think they know everything and think they know what's best but it's ridiculous because they're thinking it's okay to let an animal suffer and die just because they don't like a big business that seems shallow to me and says you don't care about animals like you say you do SMH..
“I’m going too keep an eye 👁 on her”
Get it 😅
As tempting as it always it to rescue sickly looking or very beautiful and interesting bettas, I have a personal rule of never buying them from pet stores that keep them in cups. Yeah, I could help one or two, but that would just make the store buy more.
An interesting dilemma.
I guess she broke one more implicit fish rule then.. interestingly enough
That’s why I steal them 💀
Same. I refuse to get carnival and pet store fish bc those establishments will just buy more, and the cycle will continue.
I help some anyway because I think about how much of a difference I can make for the individual fish’s lives
The fact that they keep the fish in a little cup and don't take care of them is absolutely disgusting. The hamster cages have gotten even worse and I can't even think straight when I visit.
Then don’t visit. This is the industry; if you give it attention and buy into it, they’re only gonna continue.
It honestly disgust me when they leave the lids off or not on all the way I went in to check and get stuff for my new puppy that I just picked up a few weeks ago and some of the lids were not on properly so I went in and closed. Everyone checked them to make sure all the bids were on properly some of the employees were giving me nasty looks
@@MattKeepsFish I rarely visit. The only times I do is when my family member takes me there. Otherwise, I avoid it.
@btsrosaline3559 It's disappointing, it really is.
It's sadly better than a dumpster, try to rescue the sick ones 😢
I wish that the workers cared more about the fish in some of these stores. I worked in one where the caretaker was just amazing, but she seems to be the exception to the rule.
I work at a big box pet store and I wish there was more that we could do, we do water changes on the cups weekly, but corporate is in charge of everything we do, and we're closely monitored so it's their way or the highway.
@@lowlypurveyorofcram I worked for a franchise, and the person who was in charge of the fish would take them home to treat them and then bring them back.
@@lowlypurveyorofcram does it say you can't change it more often or use treatment drops? I would think that the little bit of medicine would be worth not losing the merchandise.
Thank you for rescuing her!!! The tank is beautiful! I have a Cory Dora Catfish who lost an eye a long time ago and he is doing great!😊❤
“Close eye out” she did her dirty😭 but seriously I hope the fish is alright! I’m sure your taking good care of her!

Ay man, it's okay to break rules sometimes. Gifted that fish with the opportunity to live a long, happy, and healthy life.
‘Eye out for her’ 😂
When she said “I’m going to keep a close eye on her” I literally died I bursted out laughing 😂🤣😂because the poor fish is missing an eye ❤️
I also adopted a fish like this and named him Odin, I tried to help him as best as I could and gave him a smaller and more simple tank so he wouldn’t get spooked. He was so sweet, he did pass 6 months later though :(
At least he didn't die in a plastic bowl...❤
Atleast you tried. Rest well Odin 🥰
😓rest in peace, Odin. I just bought a sickly betta that I named Mars around 4 or 5 months ago, and today, he started pineconing. praying for the best after a hefty water change, and I ordered some overnight delivery ketacanizole 🙏
Moon? I like to think beauty IS in the eye of the beholder, even if your fishy’s only got one, and she’s so pale and graceful like the moon. You amazing for seeing her and deciding to take care or her 😊
i love this, I really hope she names her moon 💚
Moon is so basic, that’s like the people that name their cats “Luna” Mrs Mustache is good how it is..
I love how much attention that you give fish. I’ve never seen anyone so caring ❤️🌹
You know, until finding your channel, i always thought of fish as low-maintainence beginner pets. And to an extent, they are. But your videos have made me come to realize how poorly pet fish are treated, and how they’re basically just given to small kids and families who cause damage and death. Thank you for being so kind to even the little guys!
The way that the pet store didn’t clean the poop and didn’t notice the missing eye ):
If they noticed they probably would have flushed him down the toilet, so this may be a good thing... Sadly.
@@cheh1311 youre talking out youre ass literally stfu lmao you have no idea what youre talking about.
Its not poop its degraded pellets........WHEW ppl just believe anything theyre told its NUTS
As a worker at a similar petstore we do clean their cups twice a week, tho it should be much more than that. If it helps at all, when we spot sick bettas (at my store in particular) we do take them to the back and treat them. We don't flush anyone down the toilet. Alas, it will never be enough when corporations care more about the dollar than the animal 😔
@@michelles1250My ex worked at a petsmart and any sick fish just got euthanized, even if it was easily treatable like fin rot
“Keep a close EYE out for her”, poor thing, hope she recovers ♥️
You noticed that too lol
Mrs Mustache is so cute I love it
fish just escaped from horror movie 😂
The other forbidden rule is to NEVER purchase any betta from Petco/PetSmart. The bettas are always treated so poorly and buying them is encouraging the stores to get more.
she only rescues them
@@serenaferea8434If chain pet stores know that some bleeding heart will come by and pay full price for a dying fish (and post it online which encourages more people to do it), what reason do they have to keep their fish healthy and in better conditions? Sick dying fish are still selling and making these corporations a profit! That sick fish will just be replaced by another fish that will get sick from lack of care. The only way to save fish in any real way is to get these companies to STOP carrying them and that only happens if NO ONE buys them.
@@serenaferea8434 the issue is all the bettas from these stores are mistreated, so all of them will eventually lose one eye or something if no one buys them, does that mean you should buy them all?
@@Dubbsss13exactly. like petco doesn’t care if they have a bad rep if you’re giving them money anyway?
Not that I blame OP of course. How can you not want to reach out and help something that’s suffering?
i think it’s different if you’re going out of your way to purchase an animal from petco/pet smart vs how she stumbled upon this poor fish unintentionally. yes it is still supporting the business but i think it’s understandable to do this as well
This fish got lucky to get you to care for her! Love your videos and can’t stop watching them 😂❤
That is very nice that you rescued the fish
Thank You for Rescuing that Poor Betta! As a former Betta owner, my heart goes out to the people who have the money and time to save these vasty abused fish.
She didn’t “rescue” that betta, she paid for irs abuse and just funded the abuse of more fish like it. The only way to stop pet store abuse is to stop funding them!
Betta fish are hearty fish so it won't be too bad for her to be placed in a new tank this soon, especially given her circumstance. Hope she makes a full recovery! I bet she'll be even more beautiful once she's healed!

(Edit OML tysm for the likes ima cry✨🫶🏼🫶🏼)
or Victoria to represent her victory!
Nike would be nice too, the goddess of victory in Greek mythology.
Best advice for you, dont go to petco. While it is sad knowing fish like this one are suffering, and i can tell you have a big heart, shopping there for just supplies still supports this. Find a LFS that takes care of their animals and shop there for all your supplies. Best of luck with your rescue!
as a worker at petsmart i can tell u that while the conditions arent good, the animals arent completely neglected. the fish at the store i work at get water changes daily, sometimes twice if theres a lot of extra waste (the water comes from the massive filtration system set up to all of our tanks so its well treated and well cycled) and fish that have concerning conditions or behaviors get put into a larger tank with any treatment or enrichment required. No employee should be ok with anything like this, but if something like this happens, its a lazy individual
My local fish store is just as bad, maybe even worse than Petco and PetSmart and the owner is a complete a**
She is the fish MOM.
I always go through the bettas when I’m at my local petco, can’t tell you how many dead ones I’ve brought to the registers. It’s honestly so sad the conditions they’re left in. Can’t tell you how many sad cases I’ve taken home, just like you, to get them out of those little cups and give them a better life
Fish in cycles are doable if you’re diligent and experienced, which I know you are! Not for beginners or “lazy” fish keepers, and definitely not for anything but an emergency situation, but it can be done safely. ♥️
30 years experience. Fish in cycles get a bad name. I only do fish in cycles and have since the beginning. Someone taught me how back then. If you're willing to put the effort in and know how to do properly, it's pretty breezy, now especially with prebottled beneficial bacteria. 😊
one fish in a tank with this amount of plants for the amount of water that's in it, you wouldn't even detect any ammonia anyway. I have a few like this that I never changed the water in, the waste feeds the plants and eventually makes it's way into the sand as well. But anyway this video makes no sense because she has plenty of cycled filter sponge she could easily cycle it instantly if she wanted to. So she's intentionally not cycling it.
Edit: Oh and there's also a good chance the plants themselves will carry some beneficial bacteria, and probably even some snails that will help clean the tank.
@@pink_alchemist Bacteria in a bottle is 100% a scam. You had success because "cycling" is something that happens no matter what and your fish didn't care one way or the other. Every controlled study ever done conclusively showed bacteria in a bottle products do not make a difference in the slightest, and regardless of brand. You're just putting dead bacteria in the tank thinking it's going to do something and at some point it is cycled anyway. Actually the majority of aquarium products are scams and the youtubers who promote them know they are but they get them for free so there's no loss.

We had to do this with our first fish, he had been in a bowl for several months. Also a betta of course, he was left behind by our former roommates when they left. They didn't even like tell us they were leaving him behind or anything, It makes me sick. Anyway, we got him into a tank ASAP and he's still thriving nearly a year later. We had absolutely no idea what we were doing in the beginning either, we just knew bowls were bad because of our fishkeeping friends!!
Its because its so hard to watch all the fish its like watching all of ur children and try to detect if one of them is chewing on a toy

One-eyed Monroe
Sometimes rules need to be broken when the circumstances are different. You did the right decision and that fish will benefit greatly from it. The amount of ammonia and nitrates in that small container will definitely been at toxic level so it would have only been a matter of time where it would have been the fatal cause of death.
Thanks for saving that poor betta!
She looks so happy🥺
Edit:Wow I'm 3rd to comment
While yes she is saving this one fish she is also harming more. Not saying she's horrible for buying this fish, I'm sure she hates buying fish from the store anyway. I'm saying that by buying that fish it encourages the companies to keep selling them and then that leads to more not cared for fish.
A close eye out for her was a wrong choice of words 😂
Name idea:treasure, because pirates bury treasure, and they wear eye patches
The way she said “I got a close EYE on her”😂
I had a gold fish like that, she lost her eye. It didn’t seem to affect her much. She was so beautiful to me, died last year don’t know what could have been infection, old age, or both. She was 13.5, long live her memory. ( I hope you fish has a good life like mine)😊😊❤❤❤
I’d totally call her Phantom as Phantom of the Opera 😅
The missing eye reminds me of a stray cat my cousin and I encountered at a resort in Brazil. Phantom seems like a good name as it looks like she the phantom from the opera phantom movie
You can always ask employee for a piece of their filter material to put in your new filter, or if you dont use a filter, just put the material in your tank. It's already colonized and helps a lot

Hi! As ex beta fish breeder I would not recommend putting her in this tank
I do not know English that well so I cannot explain chemistry behind it but in fresh started tanks will be sudden changes of parameters!
She's professional and she can check water daily but I do not recommend it, a sick fish with tank like this will 100% die.
For wondering:
The most effective way in treating beta fish like this is to put them in bowl (you know, just some container) with fresh water, change water on on 48 h to avoid sudden changes in parameters. Slow, gentle pre started filter and ofc heater bc betas need warm water! To water you gives the
In week or two fish will be stronger and start to behave normally (in hard rescue cases it really can be a long process)
When tank is ready you can move your fished but not before first two weeks for sure. The first spike in azot (?) is the most dangerous, with others betas are dealing pretty well :)
