Thank You ! First time filling up a 2009 and my wife couldnt get it opened. Im like 400 miles away and this video just totally fixed her day. Thank You Sir
Wow! Perhaps the best "Are you having this problem? I'll show you how to fix it." video I have seen--and I've watched a million of them. Super clear description of the problem and repair. Impressive video work, showing the important details. New subscriber here!
I'm a woman, and I thank you very much for this video, cause all i get from my husband about this is: excuse, excuse, excuse to why we need an electrician... But I was smart enough to find you here, so I can call bs...
You have just saved my life!! I just came from the gas station and couldn’t open it. I was wondering what to do and the lady on the retail store adviced me to look it up on RUclips. Thanks a million!!
Dealership didn't even take the door off to remove switch to fix this problem when I had it. All they did was spray inside the switch with a quick shot of Deoxit spray which I was told dissolves and cleans any buildup on the contacts. It worked since I never had this problem again. If unfortunately the switch does need to be changed this is a great video to save money by taking the door off and replacing the switch yourself.
Cheers Mate. ;) Worked a treat. $10AU part from Ebay. Replaced in 10 minutes and works perfectly. The local dealership would have charged like a scrub bull. Thanks to you, It was a perfect fix.
Fantastic video! I often wonder how many frantic people on a road trip have pried and ultimately broken their fuel door (and marred the surrounding paint) trying to get access to the gas cap. Would recommend that the emergency fuel door handle be pulled very gently if used ... very little force is needed. Unless you're on an extremely tight budget, not a bad idea to replace the switch (only $20-25 on ebay) vice trying to clean the contacts as shown. Be sure to have those blue clips ON HAND when doing the job, as more than likely they will break. Great video!!!
Thankyou. Your fix workeed100%. And not hard to do saved me going to the mechanic and waiting weeks. (I thought the problem was the actuator at the cap end - so pleased to see it was as simple as clearing the electrical points). Took me maybe an hour to do
Before attempting to replace the switch, try spraying inside of it a de-oxidant compound (such as DeoxIT D5S-6 Spray Contact Cleaner and Rejuvenator; priced at less that $20). It worked for me for both the fuel tank switch and the power seat switches for a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe limited. If the problem returns you can repeat the application. The way to do it is to spray abundant quantity of the product through any visible opening or "crack" on, around or underneath the switch buttons using the thin straw provided with spray. For the power seat switches you may need to remove the plastic button to access any opening in the actual switch below it. The de-oxidant product is of oily consistency but does not damage plastics (it may stain fabric though) and any excess can be quickly wiped away with a paper towel. The results may or may not not be instantaneous and you should leave the product to work for a few hours in order to de-oxidize the contacts. Again the key is finding a way to pray inside the switch where the metal contacts are.
Thank you so much! I understood that the problem was in the switch, but your detailed explanation about everything and the step-by-step analysis helped a lot!
Perfect 👍👍👍 I followed another RUclips to get the panel off, but it didn’t address the switch. Watching yours, I got the switch out and apart and saw the 12 years of corrosion😲. I cleaned all the contacts and applied a bit of DeoxIT grease and put it all back together - works great again 😍.
Good stuff, thnx so much for sharing, definitely helps to visualize and prepare. Quick tip for others: Would suggest using a multimeter before and after fixing the switch for signal and testing the switch out by plugging it directly in and making sure the gas door opens before re-assembling everything on the side door.
I'm watching this video in a petrol station my petrol cap won't open problem solved, I didn't even know there was emergency release cap in boot thank you very much
If you buy a switch and replace the functional part to match interior. Be aware of small springs that push mechanism up. Also use some dielectric grease to avoid future issues with copper electric buildup.
Great video. Had the switch replaced at 35k, (cost $130 back in 2013 probably twice that now) still have the Santa Fe and switch has gone out again at 100k ............May tackle this, may not, it is our second car now, don't drive it that much, and using the panel in the back occasionally is not that big a deal.............But, I saved this video just in case.
Omg I have only just tried it now I have the 2007 sante fe here in little old New Zealand had this car for like 10yrs love it but yes the petrol flap gives me grief wow your awesome the emergency flap 👍🏼 awesome whoop whoop
Thank you, this worked for me. My build up was really bad, and I think some of it was the grease that was used on the slider. A bit of rubbing alcohol and its working like new. (2007 Santa Fe limited)
@@GarageBoys Done, Could I request a video on stuck doors? My Santa Fe back door gets stuck every now and then. When you unlock the door, the door lock unlocks inside but the door won't open. I generally just avoid the door, but perhaps this is also a known issue with an easy solution?
awesome, so when I take door off I sand or scape off the black warn marks then re assemble the whole door. and wella it should work. Why wouldn't it work? Anyway your coaching is very helpful, keep up the good work. Thank you.
If you need to replace broken plastic door panel retainers (as shown in video), recommend using Needa? Part # 9971228 from Autozone ($3.99 for a pack of 4). Though titled "Toyota Body Door Panel Retainers", this is an extremely close match. The blue retainers that are at the rear of the door (furthest from hinge) will in all likelihood break when removing the door panel (as in the video). I even used a door panel removal tool vice straight screwdrivers and still broke two of the four blue retainers.
can I not just clean this by pulling it out a little bit without taking the door panel off? Mine detaches easily from outside the panel and I have about 2 inches of wire that is connected to work with as far as room goes. thank you in advance for your response.
It was working sometimes and when the actuator is bad it makes a knocking noise. Also this is a very common Hyundai problem, if you are having this issue 99% is the switch
Thank problem solved. tested sqitch with meter showed switch working but really not. Jumped out wires to sw door released. took sw apart cleaned contacts good as new.
Why does the 07-09 have an electronic gas door opener and the 2010 has a lever at the bottom of the drivers seat? And why does the 2010 lever repair seem to be completely absent from diy videos?
I guess I will leave the little emergency door in the trunk open and use it from now on since I won’t be able of fixing the Clip by myself. But thanks anyway
Great point, one should be able to simply pry off of the door panel, much like the plastic cover underneath the door handle. Funny how all of our other vehicles have a simple mechanical cable release in the driver's compartment, yet we've never had an issue!
Thank You !

@@GarageBoys thanks millions! I followed your instructions....... Then lost one spring...UGH IS IT NECESSARY to have both..... Drat!
Thank you. Just did this on my 2011 Santa Fe. Never done anything like this to a car and now repaired my fuel door! Thank you so much!

thank you so much from Costa Rica, it worked on a 2017 santa fe too, i didn't lose any clip and I'm a woman, didn't have to replace only sandpaper
Million thanks to Garage Boys. Your video helps me to fix the issue in 10-15 minutes without any cost.

At the moment I don’t have a Santa Fe to experiment with but I will look into it. What door is giving you the issue? And some times it works?

Tried this but no luck. Santa Fe 2011 diesel. Sanded the internal contacts but the terminal that comes out from the switch had dark green rust.
Great video. I was able to fix mine too!!!!!!!
Great video.... where can I get the gas release button????
I used eBay for that. Check the link in the description
Nice tip, I've fixed it by just applying wd-40 on back switch :D

This is a very common problem with this vehicles, I’m glad I was able to help :-)
I am too. 2007.
Thanks.
Thank u!
I am wondering why you didn't just jump the wires to see if the door switch is the issue (there is an actuator on the gas cap door)?
It was working sometimes and when the actuator is bad it makes a knocking noise. Also this is a very common Hyundai problem, if you are having this issue 99% is the switch
Great tip, thanks

Sounds good, I always do amazon because of brand items and warranty. but just check reviews and you are good to go! Thanks for letting us know
I guess I will leave the little emergency door in the trunk open and use it from now on since I won’t be able of fixing the Clip by myself. But thanks anyway
Got this car, button wouldn't work, I broke the fucking fuel door in half..needless to say..I gotta fix it
it happens dude, I was going to do the same until i found the emergency release handle. and that gave me time to fix the sensor later
Another example of piss poor engineering. The switch should be accessible without having to take the entire door panel off.
Great point, one should be able to simply pry off of the door panel, much like the plastic cover underneath the door handle. Funny how all of our other vehicles have a simple mechanical cable release in the driver's compartment, yet we've never had an issue!
Thanks!
