So today at work I got to do something that was both incredibly stressful and kinda fun at the same time. Basically, before today, I'd had exactly 1 lesson on how to drive a manual car, and that was just doing 20-30 m.p.h. around an empty parking lot. Today I had to take a manual Nissan Sentra to the DMV to get inspected, and then take it to a nearby ford dealership to pick up some car parts for the auto shop I work at. Both of these trips involved doing 55 m.p.h. on the highway, which is quite the leap. And yes, there were more than a few short burnouts, and even more stalls.
Usually manual cars cost more than automatic cars in the US now, and yes police officers do drive automatic cars. They've been doing that since at least the 1960s
For some more fun the AI races in Italy with the traffic on are mental. PS the drivers keep their cars in second gear (automatic) for the Freedom 500, not sure if that works here...
if only the performance on italy was better :/ but I'll give them a try :) also thanks for the tip on second gear, I don't think it ever shifted to 3rd, but it should help
i think the reason most American police cars are automatic is because 1 anybody can get inside one and drive with minimal training (something American police are famous for) and because most departments buy there cars straight from the manufacturer in bulk so price disparity doesn't matter as much
Fill, here in the U.S, the only cars that even offer a manual are either cheap econoboxes, off-roaders, or performance cars, and more and more of them are either ditching the manuals in favor of autos, going electric, or just going away. In fact, so few people here know how to drive a manual that it is literally an effective anti-theft system because nobody knows how to drive them. It's a shame, but the whole "manuals are a dying breed" thing is so bad here in the U.S, that I genuinely wonder how much longer we'll have them, and the vast majority of people her who do know how to drive stick are old, with the younger buyers almost completely uninterested in learning. In fact, in 2023, there are only 39 new cars for sale in the U.S. that offer a manual, out of probably a few hundred total models between the companies that sell here. It's genuinely tragic.
Crown vics in a 90s to 2010s never had a manual option. As where the transmission and seats are located would be difficult to put one there and it was cheap factory
I didn't know that they didn't have a manual option :/ I am now considerably less interested in them. Though if they can have fwd manuals, then I don't think fitting a manual for rwd is that hard
@fillman86 yeah it isn't too terrible to swap them. But for it to fit since vics and old American cars have bench seats or had a center console that would have to be cut into.
