Gamestop is cancer for gaming. At least where I live. They will try to sell a used version of a game instead of a new one if they can. What is wrong with that is that they will actually try to "steal" a sale from a game manufacturer . It's lousy. Gamestop needs to die.
The irony was that I went to gamestop to get a refurbished Xbox 360 around 2 years ago, and I learned that the only system they had was the 200 dollar xbox 360 super-slim. But conveniently, another customer right next to me had an Xbox 360 that she was going to sell for store credit. And right when I was going to pay for the Xbox 360, she asked me about if I wanted to buy her Xbox 360 for only 60 bucks , which I did. So quite literally, I bought an Xbox 360 right in side of a Gamestop and we both got better rewards as I got a perfectly functional 360 and she got actual money.
That reminds me of something. I brought a PS4 to Gamestop once to trade it in for cash, and when I entered the store this one guy tried to offer me $150. But I refused because Gamestop themselves would've $200, and I decided to take the $200 instead of the $150.
If I was the cashier I would be like: "NOOOOO! YOU CAN'T DO THAT! IT'S ILLEGAL! I'M GONNA SUE YOU! Hey! Come back here! You can't just give the money to her! Stop! Come back! She is scamming you. please...come back to gamestop 😭 NOOOOOoooo I DON'T WANNA GET FIREeeeeD 😢 plz...I need that money... "
There "Premium Refurbished" systems can't be tested because not once but twice I got an Wii from them and there was still a game in the disc drive. That was 3 years ago now, so not sure if they have changed there "refurbishment" process or not.
I'm pretty sure the extent of their testing is just powering the system on, and nothing more. I bought a "Premium Refurbished" Wii U from them a year ago, and the first problem I ran into was that the gamepad/tablet would lose connection to the system if you moved beyond 2 feet of the console, when they're supposed to be good for over 20 feet. I had already planned to return it then, but I also noticed that it wouldn't read either of the 2 games I bought with it, and the discs were in pristine condition. I ordered the system on their website and got it in the mail, but thankfully there was a GameStop within 40 miles of me that I was able to take it back to and exchange for another one. The employees were very helpful, and fully tested the one they gave me while I was there.
Although I get behind the theory that there is minimal testing done of consoles at their refurb centers (which largely lacks testing the disc drive at all), it is perfectly reasonable to presume that if it's true that they do test the drives, then the two you got with discs still inside was simply two separate oversight issues. It would be easy to forget to eject every single disc/cartridge when saddled with such a menial and mindless task as checking out the functionality of old "retro" consoles.
We get all sorts of consoles with games still in them at thrift stores, usually pretty good too. I got a psp from mine for basically free, forgot what it came with.
I paid 50 for a nice one from Half Price Books and modded and installed WADs the same day. Gotta be careful with used Wii's cause they can't all be Homebrewed
@@mattsephton Apparently modding and or hacking a console is illegal there now and the legal penalties are pretty stiff as well fines and possible prison up to 5 years
I bought a "refub" PS3 from Gamestop a few years ago. It was actually a reboxed brand new old stock system. Apparently when the PS4 came out Sony offloaded all their warehouse inventory of PS3s to GameStop and GameStop just took them out of the box and put them in a refurb box.
+NaNBytes All fair points. The point I was trying to make (not clearly, I’ll admit) was that his recommendation was to not buy from GameStop because they sold him a flawed product, but he completely ignored the part of the product that could potentially reverse that recommendation - that GameStop provided a warranty. Had he gone back to them and they had refused to render a timely and hassle-free remedy, then by all means, make that recommendation.
Repairing stuff like this instead of taking it back is better for a few reasons: 1. The price of gas is usually more than the price of just fixing the problem for people that have the tools already. 2. GameStop definitely isn't going to repair the board. They're likely going to either chuck the board or the entire console, which really shouldn't happen for easily repairable boards. 3. I haven't checked GameStop's warranty, but knowing their trade-ins, you likely aren't going to get a cash refund. Why would you get a replacement or "in-store credit" from the company that sold you a broken console and lied about it being "refurbished?"
HackyBoi No offense but you seem to have the wrong idea about refurbs, all being a refurb really means is they took it in,cleaned it up,reset it to factory and powered it on to see if it worked. And it isn't exclusive to Gamestop I was the not so proud owner of a factory "refurbished" Laptop from Walmart that would always lock up when browsing the internet and I've heard horror stories about Bestbuy's "refurbished" tvs.
Joey Parkhill I bought one mid-2017 and it’s still going strong. Only issue that has come up is it likes to pick & chose what DVD it wants to play, which isn’t an issue for me because I also have a PS4
Theory on the damage: They did all the heavy cleaning of the unit after testing it. Perhaps the eject button was grungy and they cleaned it too vigorously. As for my experience, I got an XBox360 with a full speed fan mod. It was soooo loud. And it died within 2 months. Took it back with my extended warranty, found out that warranty only covers ONE replacement. Grrrr. Got a used system rather than refurbished this time. It’s been working great for 3 years now. Nice and quiet too.
How dirty can people get a wii with only two entry points for dust? I have no Idea why I'm asking having cleaned a gamecube that's interior looks like it was in a flood and dust storm.
I just bought a limited edition Zelda New 3DS XL from GameStop, and it was delivered last week. My experience was great. The system looks brand new, I don’t even notice any light scratches on it. I guess I must be lucky, but count me as a happy customer
Its not luck, buddy...its just GOOD SERVICE!! these issues are internal (the warehouse/shop where these machines are taken) The machines can be fine brought in, but then messed up when they're cleaning it. He shouldv'e simply exchanged it and explained the problem. I have, and will continue to buy from Gamestop *Fist raised!*
@@nexxusty why no? Did you mean to put something different, but there was maybe a glitch or something that caused all but those two letters to ultimately get posted? Or maybe auto correct is the culprit? Like, maybe you first had typed "nobody has stopped buying things from Gamestop as direct result of this video", but just as you pressed the post button your pinky finger accidentally pressed and held down the backspace on the keyboard, and you hadn't noticed cuz it was a touchscreen keyboard (plus you had a helluva night the previous evening cuz your boyfriend or girlfriend broke up with you via text message and you had way too much to drink and can't recall anything that happened after 9:38 pm but had seen some photos already plastered all over your favorite social media platforms, and none of it looked very "fun" for you), and we've all been there, haven't we? Yuk yuk!
I bought a Wii and Wii U both from GameStop and haven't had any issues with them! I even home brewed my Wii so I could play my GC backups and not have to switch discs all the time, and it works great. I think this was just an unfortunate case where the piece may have finally snapped off in transit as you mentioned at some point and resulted in the system you got. I imagine they'd have exchanged it no problem but glad to know this could be an issue I face in the future.
I bought a Nintendo switch lite at GameStop, the cashier said there were no new ones but he had a refurbished model that he had just cleaned and checked himself. I bought it and took it home, when I opened the box I was greeted with a couple of cracks on the screen. I touched one of the cracks and it started to spread. So I took it back, but the guy said it wasn't like that when I bought it. Came back another day when he wasn't there and got an exchange with no problem.
You have to solder the front of the button as well. There are five solder pads at the board, three at the back of the button, where pins are, and two closer to the edge, that are supposed to firmly keep the button enclosure, to stop it from wobbling when pressed.
You're better off just sifting through their regular used systems, there's always a clean example hidden away. Game Stop just takes junk, cleans it a little and sells it at a high price. But its still JUNK!
I've owned pre-owned consoles from GameStop they've always worked fine. It's the "re-furbished" you gotta stay away from. Refurbished, to me, means once broken and then fixed by a zit faced teen age employee.
You really should get better at soldering, you shouldn't need hot glue and it shouldn't wiggle after repairing, you shouldn't put solder on the iron then carry it to the board, you should apply the solder on the iron and pin while it's touching the pin of the button, the button also has other pins for reinforcement to prevent it from breaking off.
Depending on weather the pads were actually there or not He may not have had a choice. It looked like they were indented, which could indicate the pads came clean off the board. If this is the case he was really lucky that he managed to get a connection at all. That would leave nothing but the edge connections to hold the button to the board. Now if the pads were still there then he just did a piss poor job of soldering. Either way I have to day I was annoyed that he could not get the button soldered on straight. The method he used to solder the joints did not look right. (You put solder on the joint not on the iron. The solder will travel towards the heat source. if done right.) If you feel you need to do that, then you messed up somewhere. In that case tinning the pads and or the leeds is a much better option. It requires much less skill and tends to result in a far superior outcome. Heck, he could probably just have picked up some solder paste for a similar effect. Last note, did anyone see him use any flux? Now this isn't a soldering tutorial, so there may have been skipped steps, and what we saw may have been misinterpreted. Still, don't use you-tube as a training site for how to solder. Very few videos get it right and the ones that do tend to not get the most views. (E.G. real nerds tend not to be very good at being charismatic.)
@@FrozenKnight21 Yes I agree but the pads were there, just the button came off, the pads could have been re tinned and then it properly re-attached with flux or rosin core solder.
I drove 2h to a GameStop to buy a backwards compatible PS3, paid a premium for it, took it to my parent's house only to find out that it was gonna play 1 disk for 15 minutes. Took it back and was accused of ruining the system by playing a PS2 disk in it (the whole reason I bought the machine), and refused to get me another one shipped out to me and only offered me in store credit or a regular slim PS3.
Just saw this video. I have no frigging idea why Nintendo keeps using the same obnoxious buttons even today on joy-con R and L buttons. It is so easy to break it off if you accidentally press it harder than you should. Would it kill to put a small daughterboard similar to what Sony and Microsoft are doing like forever? It was obvious back then that it sucks and it is known today as well.
"Premium Refurbished" = Rest it to Factory Defaults and cleaned it a bit. How much was it? Edit: I dig your "I'm taking out screws/soldering GameStop's failure" tune.
I work in the repair business. But not for GameStop, we do repairs of Laborequipment. And if you think how that work is done I think that happened is. They tested the Wii first. If something was wrong they repaired the Wii. In most cases it means changing the optical head unit with the Laser. Then you test the Wii again partially assembled. After that you clean it and assembly the Wii. I think here they worker made the mistake and the eject button snapped of. And I think he also skipped testing the Wii after assembly because it worked after repair. Or maybe he only checked it with turning it on. And also it's possible that he tested it and the eject button worked one last time and snapped of because the solder joints there weakened before. It should not happen and I'm really not sure if GameStop is really so bad like the internet believes . Maybe it's something wrong with there internal repair guidelines. And sadly that's easy fixable for them they could ask people that have enough knowledge to help change the way of working. But they wouldn't listen to me even if I'm willing to do it for free. But I also have one point I must defend them. You said that you need to be prepared to open upen up your Wii and repair it yourself. That's wrong , you have guarantee. And as far as I know if something is wrong with your refurbished unit they take it back without problems and give you another one.
How to do GameStop damage control in 8 steps: 1. Skip to the point where your company is past it's prime 2. F*ck up a refurbishment meant for a reviewer 3. Panic 4. Contact reviewer 5. Sponsor them and send them a bunch of *correctly* refurbished consoles to save face 6. Get a new CEO 7. ??? 8. Profit
nothing some hotglue couldn't fix, my main issue is that the people buying consoles form a retailer are not likely the kinda people who are comfortable fixing it themselves.. and calling these things "refurbished" is a bad joke~
It's not packed well at all, which likely explains this physical damage. I have had this experience myself involving poor packing & rough handling during shipment.
I once bought a PS Vita from Gamestop, had to find a way to bypass the system menu to actually format it cause the last user left tons of personal information and a horrible parental control setup.
I'm not a huge gamer. We have a local small chain of stores called Gamer's Alley. That small group of stores beats the pants off of Game Stop. Gamer's Alley has better prices on used gear, and generally offers better trade in on used gear. In short, I have zero interest in Game Stop.
True story, I bought a refurbished Black PSP GO with a Warrenty from game stop. You should've saw the worker's faces when I brought a broken PSP GO in for the replacement warrenty. They had to order a psp go from a diffrent store, which normally they dont do because I had to go to a diffrent city to buy the PSP GO in the first place. When it came to the store a week later it was a white PSP GO, if I was a Dick I couldve forced them to get me a Black one but I didnt.
I had an issue when I bought a used original XBOX a while back. A few days after my purchase, the HDD inside the console died. It was slow and making unusual sounds that indicated a dying HDD before it went dead. Fortunately, I was able to get a replacement XBOX and that one worked fine. But ever since, I just didn't trust GS anymore with used systems. First impressions are everything in the "premium" industry.
The Wii is an entire generation that I am quite happy to miss out on. If I want to stand up and move around, I will just go do something real. Those Wii games I want to play really don't require motion control and can be emulated. As a game collector, I think collecting disc based games is a waste of money. they do not last over time because of disc rot. I have plenty of CDs from the '80s and '90s that have failed. Data discs only need a tiny pinhole of disc rot to render them unusable. I had my first PC game disc from the '90s fail several years ago. People report that Dreamcast games are starting to fail. Playstation games last longer because of the dark color, but it is only a matter of time for those as well.
In 2004 I bought a refurbished OG XBOX from Gamestop. For the most part, it was a piece of junk. Old and scratched discs would work just fine, but brand new games would not. Spent like $30 on a brand new copy of GTA:SA (silver box) and it would not work. Ended up pawning it and all of my games for like $75.
Hey there, I work at a tech retailer. Functionality check or quality inspected mean we plugged it into the wall and watched it turn on, THEN turned it off and threw it in the box.
I think they took the eject button after ripping it out and sprayed it with stuff they yeeted it in the place it was with some very weak glue and put it in the box
Me - "I've got this limited edition solid gold Atari signed by Elvis, Neil Armstrong and David Bowie". Gamestop - "We'll give you 15 bucks for it and put it on sale for a couple of million"
If I recall, a good game to test how well your Wii's disc drive is working is The Last Story. This is because the first cutscene's audio I believe is completely streamed off the disc in real time rather then being loaded into memory (meanwhile everything else is). So the characters will move around, and do lip flaps like normal for the whole scene. But the dialogue audio will pause, and be get to be completely out of sync with the game. - It even continues playing after the cutscene has ended. Back in the day, this was how I first realized that my Wii's disc drive was having issues. (Well that, and it also Red Steel had these long awkward pauses durring cutscenes, with the Wii's disc drive going crazy)
Any of the guitar heroes are also good as many things can happen from the intro video to jumping all over the place to songs not playing but background video is (they cheated on Wii versions the crowd and stage is pre rendered only the band is 3d)
I wouldn't test it, but I remember a few times when I ejected "Super Mario Galaxy", it still still run, just without any music for like 20 seconds to around a minute. I think it might've been a glitch caused by the amount of scratches on it or the usage of the Action Replay Wii I got at Target as it's not supposed to happen.
All Wiis support dual layered discs. Even the Wii mini. The issue is that older Wii consoles, specifically launch systems (before '08) have difficulty or are completely unable to read these discs due a dirty lens or, a much bigger problem, the disc drive may be failing.
I have a feeling this console and accessories were cosmetically cleaned and that's about it. I've gotten a few consoles from GameStop before and it seems that half the time there's something going on related to the disc drive. I had to immediately swap out the laser on a Xbox 360 I got, and of course I've mentioned before that I got a Wii with a broken and clicking disc drive... Which had a game the testers left inside. No idea how that came about. Positive note? I've gotten 3 free games thanks to testers leaving discs forgotten about in the drives! Wii Sports, Black Ops (360), and Black Ops 3 (PS4), all 3 of which I'll gladly play!
Well, we all love cheap stuff. I'm going to be honest. That things had a pounding but that really is a poor design for the eject button. Nintendo didn't care, they sold really well. I'v never had that issue with the eject button coming loose though (will explain soon). Also - I assume that is much the same thing as buying EB refurbished consoles? I have two of those with no issue. A ps4 and a Wii U. You know, I have two Wii consoles one of which I bought for the games they had in a bundle lot through facebook and the other was given to me because the previous owners probably felt bad for it. Both Wii consoles were thrashed, one had crayon and water colour paint still all on it, disc in the tray in a plastic bag full of other crap (I have a useless balance board now, yay). The second one? Ugh, it was passed to me by the guy just throwing it on the ground and then having a car amp thrown on top, thing was so scratched as if a bear ate it and shat it out. He found it after years of losing it, was upside down and squashed inside of a shipping container that leaked. It looked so bad, the nest of cables had snapped from just a heap of stuff thrown on it even the ends of the compositie cables were flattened. Wii fit was inside the drive (shit). How they both work I have no idea.
Wouldn't surprise me. My experience from buying cleaning and fixing consoles is that it's nearly impossible to sell a console If something is wrong with it.
Having had worked at GS for quite a few years, I usually recommend the pre-owned vs the refurb systems, for the pure fact of they had their hands on the system in that store usually, and can test that functionality on the spot. I also didn't care if someone asked me to pull the system out of the box and test it as is. In saying that in this case, especially seeing how that button was held in place, it's entirely possible with the age of these systems that the solder had been weakened over time and shipping the system may have just completely killed it. GS had their shipping contract with UPS when I worked there, and I feel like that's enough said. I have a million bad things I could say about GS, especially considering my leaving wasn't on good terms. But I'd say it's hard to judge based on that alone.
The contract just changed again to USPS. It previously was with FedEx. That being said, the way they pack things is just by shoving some paper into the box, check out Austin Evan's Xbox GameStop video. I still work there but will probably leave soon due to the sheer incompetence of all the people at my store and the company itself
Being honest I just don't know about people nowadays? They claim to be gamers but still go buy refurbished systems from Gamestop. This isn't the 90s and internet is widely available so plenty of videos are viewed on this subject?Point blank should never be buying refurbished systems from Gamestop.

I've bought things from there, but a lot of people simply don't trust online stores and markets. Gamestop is incredibly convenient for just being able to go and buy something, have it instantly, and have some sort of repair guarantee.
Because, at least with Gamestop, it's less of a hassle to return bad systems. And if you don't know how to fix them, why bother with online when returns are much worse? And, many like me would rather go purchase locally and have it in our hands immediately instead of waiting two or more days.

It's (apparently) a vertical mounted switch with no additional support... It's literally held in place by solder. While this SHOULD have been found while being inspected, Nintendo shouldn't be given a pass here. They designed the switch that way.
V endetta that’s arguably a distinction without a difference. It’s clear MVG was parroting the “premium” quality of the unit in jest, since it’s very clearly not of high quality. He was also feigning elation over fixing the already “premium” unit, which qualifies as sarcastic in tone.

I often have issues running GameCube discs on refurbished Wiis. Those discs spin faster I believe... something like that. Now and then I'll get a Wii that runs Wii discs fine but GameCube discs with very mixed results, often telling me "error - refer to manual" as soon as any 3D graphics are loaded into the game. Might want to check that out as well in the future with Wiis.
@@CAPCOM784 The one I got brand new back in the day started doing that two or maybe three years ago. Now when I play GameCube on it, it'll get into menus but as soon as anything in-game happens it will just crash. Never happens with Wii discs on it though. The other I have is alright, but I've had friends who report similar experiences with their Wiis.

Legend you can’t say that it depends on the right system you buy because i bought a refurbished wii before and all it had on it was a scratch and worked like a dream so you can’t really judge on one system
Actually most of my consoles are refurbished except my ps4 and they dont have any problems. Refurbished systems I own: 2ds, 3ds, wii, ps3 slim, xbox one, gamecube and ps vita. I bought them all at gamestop
@@PackardKotch Thats not how trade ins at Gamestop work. When we check it before the trade, if everything works it gets accepted, boxed up, and put with others to be sold at that location. If something doesnt work it gets bundled up, put in a defective box, then sent to the refurb center. The stores themselves don't do the refurb work, so don't take it out on them. I always recomend preowned over refurb to my customers because Im confident in my ability to test a system as opposed to relying on someone else at the refurb center.
GameStop? I don't buy from there. Haven't in a long time. No thanks. I couldn't do that same repair (haven't the skill nor the equipment nor know anyone that does), so yeah, I wouldn't buy it at all. I'd rather buy from a place that resells retro games like Game Fortress in Arvada.
I had a really cool video game store in my town but they went out of business during the summer and their store in the next town over got bought out. I still support Gamestop so that way I still have a store to go to. Even if I get something bad or broken from Gamestop, I can still just drive back to the store and refund/replace it, but with Amazon or Ebay it's not guaranteed
Our family bought a Wii in about 2009 and hauled it to our grandparents house every day (30 mins each way) and poured literally 1000s of hours into it. Now, in 2019 it finally stopped reading discs.
Not speaking to just GameStop game systems, but the word "refurbished" is supposed to mean a product that has been sent back to the original manufacturer to be tested, repaired if needed, cleaned, and then sent back to a customer or retail outlet for resale. But today the word refurbished is being thrown around by any idiot with a rag and a bottle of Windex. If you see the word "refurbished" ask the seller for proof that it was sent back to the manufacturer or a manufacturer's approved repair facility and actually refurbished. If they cannot or refuse to give you this information, you are dealing with an idiot with a bottle of Windex. As for the GameStop refurbished systems, they aren't refurbished. They send the moron sales kids behind the counter to the back room where they keep their systems that were sold to them and have them clean them off, put some plastic on them, and drop it and some accessories in a box. There is NO "refurbishing" going on there.
Refurbished =/= original manufacturer refurbished. A third party company is 100% capable of picking up broken systems and repairing and refurbishing them. It has been long enough now that spare parts are easily come by. However you're correct that GameStop isn't doing this.
@@MrCougar214 No, because you implied that a 3rd party company is only capable of this if it is manufacturer-approved. Just take a look at Apple and Louis Rossman and you will see that that is wrong.
False. I used to work there and you described what happens with pre-owned. With pre-owned, the system is cleaned and data wiped. Its also tested and made sure to work. If it doesn't work, its marked as defective and sent back to the Gamestop warehouse in Texas where they decide if it can be refurbished or not. If it can, they "fix" it. The store employees have nothing to do with refurbs, they just accept them when the shipment comes. We aren't told to test them as it is assumed the warehouse employees fixed the issue(s)
I gave them my red old 3ds that only turns on when the screen is tilted a certain way and when I traded it in they turned it on and it worked so someone has my faulty 3ds 😳
Just like its name GameStop, it simply just stops your gaming.
Gamestop is cancer for gaming. At least where I live. They will try to sell a used version of a game instead of a new one if they can. What is wrong with that is that they will actually try to "steal" a sale from a game manufacturer . It's lousy. Gamestop needs to die.
Jonas Rosenven i also heard they sold used games as new ones
I avoid shopping at gamestop like the plague.
far from everyone knows how to fix that damage
I bought my Xbox One S at the local Value Pawn. Had it about a year and a half no problems. Put that shit on layaway too cause im a broke bitch...
IrritationNation GameStop: how to have you cake and eat it too.
Gamestop: Am i a joke to you
That reminds me of something.

Looks like your Nintendo Wii needs a new Nintendo Switch

I bought a "refub" PS3 from Gamestop a few years ago. It was actually a reboxed brand new old stock system. Apparently when the PS4 came out Sony offloaded all their warehouse inventory of PS3s to GameStop and GameStop just took them out of the box and put them in a refurb box.
I mean it had a 30 day warranty? Take it back was in order, I think.
@@nathanielwilliams9177 you are an amazing fella you know
you're forgetting the cost of gas and time just to get there, probably would be easier to fix yourself
Repairing stuff like this instead of taking it back is better for a few reasons:

@@MarzipanFondue52 I guess you'd have to demand they do something about that. But you're right, that would be a hassle.

You have to solder the front of the button as well. There are five solder pads at the board, three at the back of the button, where pins are, and two closer to the edge, that are supposed to firmly keep the button enclosure, to stop it from wobbling when pressed.
When you use USB loader and barely use the eject button because you downloaded your games onto the external hard drive
When your system mysteriously stops booting up and you require an eject button to restore your NAND..
When you use BootMii for brick protection on Boot2 and stop that shit
You're better off just sifting through their regular used systems, there's always a clean example hidden away. Game Stop just takes junk, cleans it a little and sells it at a high price. But its still JUNK!
Refurbished is actually an old Latin word that loosely translates to "cleaned with a Clorox wipe"

(Well that, and it also Red Steel had these long awkward pauses durring cutscenes, with the Wii's disc drive going crazy)
wow... i had that on my wii and the disk reader broke entirely, that information would be useful earlier :/
and then test Brawl. Brawl will test if your Wii supports dual layer DVDs because not all Wiis do.
MrMario2011 just buy the consoles and bring them back but take the testdisks before ^^

You talk too much
lucky!
Thanks bro. Hope this still holds up. Although, why did you leave?
The contract just changed again to USPS. It previously was with FedEx. That being said, the way they pack things is just by shoving some paper into the box, check out Austin Evan's Xbox GameStop video. I still work there but will probably leave soon due to the sheer incompetence of all the people at my store and the company itself

But the way it is supposed to work is that Gamestop accepts both good and bad systems, they then send them in for repairs and once they are repaired, they get these seals of approval, and if they failed to fix it, it's supposed to be scrapped and whatever parts still work be taken to be used on other systems, that is what happened to your system as well, it has nothing to do with the previous owner, nor you, nor anyone else, other than whoever Gamestop used, not doing their job, or at least, not doing it properly.

Actually no. There are no standards for what a company can call "refurbished". Always buy new.
Refurbished =/= original manufacturer refurbished. A third party company is 100% capable of picking up broken systems and repairing and refurbishing them. It has been long enough now that spare parts are easily come by. However you're correct that GameStop isn't doing this.
