    Somewhere I heard that op amps are essentially comparators that do a poor job of comparing, and comparators are op amps specifically designed to do that job. I think Dave Jones said it ... something like that. 😄

      Yeah I read something similar to that early on when I was relearning electronics. And heard it mentioned here and there ever since. I think the Art of Electronics covers the differences in great detail.

    Hi, using lm311p, on breadboard the output always stays at active low (0.65v). Not getting active high, the output is in the off state, regardless of the differential input. Any help ?
    MC3302P works same as lm339 ?, any modifications needed?

      TI datasheet says lm311 is an open collector comparator. So you'll need to add a pull up resistor that provides a high output when the IC isn't providing a low output. That's all I can think of.

    Can I use 12v on this ic?

      Texas Instrument's datasheet says 36V max 38V if there is a B at the end of the part number. So 12V should be OK, but you should consult the datasheet for all of it's power limitations.
