Never used a grasshopper, but they look nice. I took an old piece of welding lead and cut the jacket off and braided it so its about 4 feet long, I just double it over wrap it around the pipe and pull it back through itself and then hook my ground to it. Works well for when I cant get a ground on something.
Thats how we all do it around here. Easy to turn the pipe on the pipe stands. I also see guy's bend copper pipe into a j hook and hook the ground onto that.
That’s the number one rule that most people break and it gets them hurt… If something starts to fall, let it fall. You’re not going to be able to stop it, just let it go. I’ve seen more people get hurt from trying to grab something to keep it from going over or push it something to keep it from falling toward them when they should’ve just run or jumped out of the way. When you’re dealing with big heavy stuff you’re not going to be able to stop it whether it’s a piece of pipe or a tree you just cut or whatever just let it fall. If it tear something up, that’s too bad you’ll just have to fix it. But as long as nobody gets hurt everything can be repaired.
Austin, you mentioning cutting the bottom tacks first was a question I asked my pipe instructor in school. He said that if we couldn't roll the pipe to cut it, always start at the bottom and work your way up to a certain point, then you can cut the rest downhill and the pipe won't fall on your head and kill you. Didn't know that little trick about how to set jack stands so they shouldn't fall over. It's hitting me hard now since we had a mess up the other day after a dolly flew out from under a project we were moving and the front end got damaged. Oh, that reminds me of a trick we use at work when sending out big jobs in pieces. Use spray paint to mark the areas you don't weld! Blaze Orange or bright green does best since your eyes pick up on them easier than red or blue. A quick request if you deem it informative or useful for a video. Could you explain how to make those jack stands? I don't feel like paying an arm and a leg for them if I can make them myself.
Look up boat stands. Easy! Triangle base of angle material 3 angles coming up to vertical tube Base built! Top is acme treaded rod with a nut and your roller/s welded on top. Take your roller with acme thread stick out the bottom and screw the nut on and drop it in the vertical pipe of the base. Simple.

This is kinda off the subject but not really. If I’m welding off the back of my truck should I disconnect the battery or ground the truck to the earth? Thanks for any info. Your videos are awesome 👍 very educational
THERE IS NO "MOISTURE IN THE METAL". I am sure you know that, but there are plenty of people who don't. For those who don't know, the moisture he was referring to was the condensation from the torch combustion. If you heat the plate past the boiling point of water, condensation won't form over your soapstone lines. Sometimes the moisture will make the line appear fuzzy. Before someone gets snarky, I started welding in 1997 building metal buildings in a shop, went to welding school for a semester and began a construction career. I have welded tanks, repaired heavy equipment in gold mines, tubes on boilers, pipe in refineries, built robots in a custom fab shop and now I am retired to the farm. I have seen welding once or twice... For the most part, Austin is spot on with his advice. And ALL welders can do it better than someone they are watching.. Remember that, too.. 🙂
hey man could you plz do a video on oxy propane cutting? theres no really good videos on youtube about it. and alot of people wanna use propane to cut. my local junk yard has 500 foot cables hooked to huge tanks of propane and a bunch of oxygen tanks ran in parallel. im setting up a torch myself i bought 4 torchs 1 victor, 1 harris 36inch for cutting. 1 24 inch harris and a old airco torch. i wanna be able to use propane for my rose bud and cutting but ik i need acytalyne to braze. im saving my victor to braze with. best brazing torch i ever used

I would be interested to see how one would turn out if you just welded the entire thing out and then used your beveler to cut the legs just below the 45 pieces and then re weld the legs on when u get to the install site. Ofcourse you would want to use a sanding pad and very nicely sand your cap down when finished.
Yeah when you weld it you shrunk it plus the Heat gain of the Sun I've never measured it but I know it 40ft if you weld both ends solid to something on a 90-degree day when you come back in the morning and it's 45° you will pull chunks out of concrete I tried to tell him and they wouldn't listen
I just got pipe welding I just have a regular Miller bobcat welder is that good one for doing pipe welding or should I invest in the money into a a SA-200 Lincoln welder

I braided 3 pieces of 2 Guage battery cable together, about 4 feet worth. Attached some 4/0 lugs on each end, best ground for pipe ever.
