Any tips on prepping the thread and keeping it from getting tangly/kinked while stitching? Ive used tiger thread for projects for years and have never had issues but switched to the lin cable for a bridle project and its quite twisty/tangly?
On cabled thread, look out for the thread wanting to twist around itself when slack. Every so often let the needles drop completely and watch them untwist.
@@LeathercraftMasterclass thanks! I also found going down in thread size helped a ton. I think was using a thread that was a touch to big for my awl size and all the friction pulling through the holes was to much. I was using 432 with a 1.5mm wide awl blade and switched to 532 and it has been much smoother sailing. Still have to let the thread dangle occasionally, but overall its much better.
Hi Phil, what are your favorite colors and which are the universal favorite colors e or used the colors of thread? Maybe everybody his own choice, but to attract buyers you have to burry your colors.
I like all colours really, I don't think I have a favourite. Universal colours for leatherwork are black, brown, tan, off white. Yellow also pairs well with many natural leathers.
I have a question. I saw the "Poliestere Special Maroquinerie thread", always by Fil au chinois. Do you try it? It can works to handsewing, or it's better the linen one? 😊 Thank you.
Hello, I have been using Sinabroks pricking irons that are "Flat" with 5mm spacing. I have been using .020" - (0.51mm) braided waxed cord from Maine Thread. I mostly make journal covers and small accessories. I was considering switching to Fil Au Chinois, but can you let me know what thread size you think would be best for the journal covers considering the pricking irons I am using? Not sure if it matters, but the leather I am using is English bridle, mostly 4-4.5oz, and 3-4oz for smaller items. Thank you
I'm going to have to pick up some of this thread! You've also changed my mind about stitching. I started out preferring straight dashes like ------- but watching you make high quality European style leathergoods has made me see the beauty in ~~~~
Excellent review and video. Very professional. Thank you for taking the time to produce it! And very interesting. I just ordered several colors. My customer is looking for a bright green stitch on his new custom leather watch bracelet. I sent him your video to explain the quality of this thread. Cheers from McCarthy Aerospace Watches!
@@LeathercraftMasterclass Would you agree, that linen would be more suitable for small leather goods like wallets and watchstraps, where the thread is constantly examined by the eyes. While polyester on bags and luggage, where the seams need more strength than looks?
Love the simple and clear video! Being new there's sooo many things to consider from tools to leather to dyes/finishes to thread... after a while it all blends together. Have you ever used the famous bonded nylon Vinymo MBT? If so what's your opninion. Thx!
Hello. Thank you very much. I haven't used Vinymo thread as I am not too crazy about the synthetic shine that it brings to the seam. It makes the stitch look too similar to a machine sewn product for me.
@@LeathercraftMasterclass Hmm I see what you're getting at. Some of them indeed don't look hand stitched. However, I think I'll try to combine a relative thicker thread with a 5.5-6.5SPI think that would atleast give a better result?
Hola Phil! Nice review! What do you think about the fact that this thread is not quite suitable for the humidity? in that case poliéster would be the more durable solución? I would like to know your opinión. Thanks!
How many times do you run your thread with the wax? I find if I wax coloured thread the wax shows even after the product is finished. I don't mean bits of wax, that I can get rid of by brushing it off. I mean that the thread no longer looks like pure red or pure blue but looks like whitish red and whitish blue. Thanks.
Try melting the wax into the thread prior to stitching or use a hairdryer to carefully melt the wax in after stitching. Your wax is just sitting on the surface.
Leathercraft Masterclass thanks a lot! Just i need to know is the one year course good for beggars or its good to be a pro !? Because i do leather jobs and I need some tips to do my job perfectly.
What size did you use?? And what size needles please l, I am trying to figure out what is the best size for small bags. The size you used looks good not too thin or too thick.
Happy to hear that. I just buyed this thread for the work for my mother gift. 😊 I hope it will be nice. 😣It will be my first big work. My I ask you something? How I must calculate how much thread I need for a work, 🤔 please?
For thin leather, the thread should be 4x the length of the seam. Example: a 10cm seam requires 40cm of thread, plus a little extra for the needles. Thicker leathers 6x or more.
Just got three spools of this (532) thread or «medium» among their five thicknesses. Very surprised at how thin it is compared to the other threads I have tried. Also how unwaxed it feels for a waxed thread. I really cannot feel any wax on it at all. But the color selection is great.
Hi Phil, I totally agree. I love stitching with this thread. This investment is a good one and I am very thankful for your Insta review of a ‚linen‘ thread from a well known Chinese brand. This rewiew enlightened me about the production of linen thread and the price differences. Thanks for transferring knowledge. 🙏
FAC, first thread I used in my leatherworks. FAC has a classy look to it and full vibrant color. The only thing I can say is if you are going for a highly weather resistant application, such as a military watch band, then polyester does have a benefit as it will likely be more water resistant than the natural fiber. However, if you properly seal the thread and maintain the item regularly a natural fiber will likely have good longevity.
Yeah totally agree. Knife sheathes and axe sheathes that I've made all have cabled polyester, strikes a nice balance between looks and utility. Polybraid by Twist is a good one, I just don't like the look of Tiger anymore.

Yes I've tried it. It is a little soft for me. I prefer a more dense linen thread.

5mm is huge, so you could use the thickest thread they offer which is size 332, though 432 will be closer to the thread diameter you currently use.

When do you use polyester tread and when linen?
It's really a personal choice. I like the look and the tradition of linen, it's not really based on practicality.

Thanks for your enquiry Ronin. There are two Plans available, the 6 Month and the 1 Year. Both are one time payment options. Hope this helps! 👍

Yes, it's a very subtle waxing, not enough to scrape off with a fingernail but enough to condition the strands.

Hi Phil, can this type of thread end by melting it?
No it cannot as it is not plastic based. Thanks for tuning in Victor 👍
