This is avery itneresting video, what has held me back from doing this, that there is no direct option of passing through the NIC exclusively to the VM. Assignign an IP address which is not working is one way to stop DSM connecting to the modem. Wondering if there are any other security aspects, to be looked at?
Man, this is a great video!!! Thanks for sharing! What if I want to isolate my home network from the NAS? Is that possible? I mean, if I just want to use the pfSense to expose certain Synology VM to the internet and isolate the rest of the home network. Thanks!
Thank you!! And thanks for the suggestion on making a video on installing PLEX using container manager. I'll definitely look into it... Creating a video on PLEX is something that I've been looking to do for some time.
Depends on what you are going to use it for and what the bandwidth usage will be like. The more it is the less this is a good solution. I personally am going to use this virtual solution for a video doorbell and that's it.
Is there any way I could remove the router from the network ? To have my NAS connected to the ISP modem and then the switch to be connected to the NAS on the second port ?
Hi, thanks for the great video. Right now i have only one ISP modem/router. In this case, can i still use pfsense as i firewall? I mean, you have one modem and router but in my case, i have just one device from ISP (all in one)
Glad you liked the video!! Regarding your question, you can still use pfsense as your firewall. You should be able to plug one of the LAN ports on your ISP modem/router into the WAN port setup on your Synology NAS setup with pfsense. Then the LAN port of pfsense could be plugged into a switch that could then connect to other devices on the LAN. Hope that helps? Good luck!!
@@digital_aloha Thanks for reply, My ISP modem can not working bridge mode. I can only disable dhcp and wifi on the ISP modem. If i'm using port forwarding and vpn right now, how can use this options after pfsense?
@@okanerdem That is a tough situation. What you can try is using port forwarding from the two routers to do what you are trying to accomplish. I've had some mixed results with this setup, but that may be the only thing you can do if you can't set up your ISP modem in bridge mode.
Hi @digital_aloha, another question about security perspective, if we using our nas also as FW , We are using one of ethernet port for synology and We expose one of the ports. Is it a security issue?

Everything is done correctly (I checked 5 times already). But somehow it's not working. Only one twist that I haven't followed from your video is that I am using the same router to act as a switch (access point). Help me please if you can.
Not exactly sure what the issue is? What happens if you plug the LAN port directly to your computer? If everything is setup correctly you should get a DHCP IP address from the pfSense LAN network.

That is a good question. I actually don't have a dedicated pfsense box so I can't test.

I could connect the router to the switch later and have it as AP
