Jeff really has come such a long way in caring about his friends. If this were season 1, it would probably be Annie trying to convince everyone else to tell their secrets to make Shirely feel better, with Jeff being the most reluctant. Here it was his idea and he voluntarily went first. Even Annie, who's always about doing the right thing, was mortified and refusing along with the rest of the group. I love Jeff.
Speaking from experience, sometimes you have to spend some time being the worst version of yourself to realize that it doesn't increase your happiness, it destroys it. Harmon clearly has a deep understanding of psychology, his characters are so fucking real. I know he wasn't here for this season, but you know what I mean.
"Oh, look! It is my favourite study group. They all really typify the diversity we have here at Greendale. A ruggedly handsome leading man. A mom, an activist, a perfect student, a lifelong learner, a sidekick, and... Abed." LOL!! I cant you guys XD
This isn't my least favorite episode of the season, but I'd call it... the one that had the most potential. I think every episode this season had a good concept overall but they all missed out on that potential, and I think this one had the ingredients to be a really great episode, very similar to Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas. And because of that really high ceiling, it sorta felt like the biggest miss for me. However, I think it had maybe one or two moments that still made it more enjoyable than most of the other episodes.
Yeah, a lot of the emotional punch didn't really hit. I think a lot of that was due to the setup not really building enough suspense, the secrets not really being that great and the emotional resolution being rushed. I agree if they'd spent some more time developing the story it would've been a lot stronger. But I still enjoyed the episode.
I think maybe if they established the group hadn’t even been seeing each other for a week and maybe have Pierce being left in the woods be the thing that ruined their relationship it could’ve been better. Show the group maybe start questioning if they’re the people they thought they were because they’re all kinda horrified by how any of them could’ve abandoned Pierce in the woods whilst in a drugged up state, then the resolution could be that they realise they’re not perfect and they can’t base opinions of each other off of their worst moments. That’s at least better than them not talking then suddenly talking after they share secrets
I don't hate S4 like alot seem to but I don't like this episode. I feel like the secrets revealed are really OOC (Annie) or are never brought up again meaning they aren't worth revealing. I have the same problem with two future episodes in S5 and S6 for the same reason. Though I do like the first song.
The secrets revealed here have been set up since the first 3 seasons as character work. I guess they wanted to show that everyone slips up sometimes and the group's bond is so strong now that they can reveal this without any judgement. The fact that they could do this with humor and to my distaste, songs is laudable. This doesn't have to be brought up again, not for a 6 season long comedy.
Dan Harmon always tends to deconstruct genre when he did the more gimmicky episodes. There was some point to it, like the flashback episode being a way to waste the studio's money, or paintball embracing the structures and tropes of action movies. This is just Community + muppets.
- I don't think the Annie reveal was too far OOC. Don't forget that she used to be addicted to Adderall because she wanted good grades. She's also used her body to her advantage to get her way (Glee episode for example). - I wouldn't be surprised if Shirley had left her kids behind in order to tail her husband because of the history between them. People have done worse when it comes to finding out if their partner's cheating on them. - Troy is a bit of a goof, so he may not think about how setting ants on fire might lead to an out of control fire. - The Pierce, Britta and Jeff secrets are no-brainers.
It's the first ep of season 4 that I don't rewatch before watching your reaction, so I don't remember a lot. But I do remember this one being the episode I disliked the most. Now on to watch the reaction.
I think season 4 is actually better than season 3. The Chang Coup was getting very silly even for Greendale; Season 4 makes some effort to ground it back to season 2 silliness a bit more.
Ok so they had a convention a while later with the cast sitting down with puppets except I think some were new and bigger, especially Abed's, so anyway Abeds actor wasn't familiar with the big puppet and didn't know he had to put his hand in it so when he noticed he said "Oooh, I didn't know you put your hand up it"
Huh. I feel like this episode epitomizes why people DEFEND s4. At the bare minimum, if you don’t have That’s an Adventure in your head after this, you are a robot.
There's no connection between the crazy adventure and the lives of the characters. It's just crazy for crazy's sake. That wouldn't have happened in any other season.
Przemysław Zańko what episode did you watch...? This season is not a bad season of TV, but it is a bad season of community. It’s more of a caricature of its former self, with no original ideas, bad execution, and no real depth. However it does have rapidfire jokes.
I think it has dealt with a lot of built up plot points extremely well. It lacks Dan Harmon's specific writing twists, but it still thrives with the story it's been given.
Chris, this is what you have to do: 1) Watch a show and react just like you would normally. 2) Then edit up the episode like normal. 3) Then film a puppet show, using the edited video as your audio. 4) Then make the video for RUclips with the puppets reacting to the show. (You could cut out step 2, but then that means 30 mins of puppeteering vs 10 mins, plus any intro/outro talking) You could easily do this for a Parks and Rec episode, but it would be even crazier to do it to something like The Walking Dead or Westworld (especially since Westworld would give you plenty of time to get the puppets)
I cannot stress enough how emotionally distraught I am of that weak reaction to Jeff's confession. I am absolutely beside myself!!!! FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!!

Sara Bareilles's song "Gravity" was also used in a previous episode when Annie and Jeff were sharing looks in slow motion.
