The confusion is from Algernon Blackwood's "The Wendigo," which despite the name, was clearly about a skinwalker... Everyone's been basing their Wendigos on that interpretation ever since.

PERSONAL ENCOUNTER WITH SKINWALKER: First of all I would like to say that I have been obsessed with skinwalkers for the past 6 or 7 months, I know a lot about them and since I live in new Mexico i was hopeful that I could maybe spot one someday. Now on to the story; So about a month or so ago I was having a sleepover with my friend and being the rebellious teenagers we are we were gonna do ding dong ditch. So it's about 11:00 o'clock at night with no moon so it's very dark. We were laughing and messing around, (keep in mind my house is at the top of a hill and is just up the street from an intersection) we had just turned on to another street and were almost to the bottom of another hill, and that's when my friend noticed that about 500 yards away was this black figure and she asked what it was, I figured it was a trash can and so I turned on my phone light planning to show her and tease her about the big scary trashcan. But when I shone the light in that direction a pair of glowing eyes met our gaze. I froze and started to notice it's features; at first I thought it was a dog since stray dogs are super common where I live, and that's exactly what it looked like except for the fact that it was right near a mailbox and was just as tall as it if not bigger. It was on all fours, black, furry, but...I shit you not...its paws were backwards. So there we were, all three of us in the middle of the street frozen. Then my friend just yelped and started running towards my house. Ofcourse with my shitty physical condition my hip popped and I couldn't run so she had to grab my hand and practically drag me up the hill and my long ass driveway. When we got home we flopped onto the couch and just started laughing, and that's that I remembered that a week prior my other friend and I were lighting fireworks outside (again around 11 o'clock ) and we heard screaming, and not just like playing around screaming, blood curdling screaming. This went on and off for about an hour (during that time my friend pulled out her phone and recorded it if any of you want to hear it let me know) so me being stupid once again wanted to find where it was coming from. So we followed the screaming to the house right next to mine (there is about an acre separating us) and we listened for about 3 minutes considering what to do. Then the screaming started shifting to the house next to that, and once again we stood there for a bit trying to decide what type of situation this was. And then it shifted again, only this time it didn't just stay at one house, it kept moving from house to house. Eventually the screaming paused and we again stood in the street for quite some time deciding whether or not to call the police (for whatever reason we didn't) and then we both agreed to just go inside since it had stopped for a good 15 minutes. Looking back on it now I probably would have ended up doing more but as far as we know no one was hurt or killed which is what leads me to believe these two stories are connected. So now to more recent events, a couple weeks ago I was up late about 2:30 doing laundry (our laundry machines are located between our kitchen and my dads bathroom right next to our back door where my two big dogs are.) when I heard a distinct tapping on the kitchen window, and I froze and turned off the laundry room light because the window is in clear view of where I was standing. So then logical me kicked in thinking that it was just one of my dogs messing around, so I decided to open the back door to give them a treat, but they were no where to be seen which was odd but our backyard is about half an acre of land so they were most likely play fighting then chased eachother to another part of the yard. I then proceeded doing laundry only to hear the noise once again except louder, but the most creepy part was that it had knocked in the same rhythm as it did before. So the events that had occurred recently came to mind and I decided that it was highly likely to be a skinwalker. So I finished up my laundry, closed all of the blinds and made sure the door was locked. That night when I was laying in bed I remembered I had to clean a fish tank, (I have a bunch of pets at my house and do pet chores weekly) but then I felt dread remembering that when I clean my fish tanks I dump the buckets of dirty water outside, and if there was something outside I certainly wasn't going out there. I ended up not doing the water change but now I'm thinking about the possibility that whatever had tapped on the window had been watching me and learned my routine of having to go outside to dump the water. (it's safe to say that I always make sure to do pet chores during the day now.) and lastly the most recent of odd occurrences. My dad and I don't live in the country per say, but our neighborhood isn't exactly suburban, and we live way out in the desert where seeing coyotes, rabbits, snakes isn't rare. My dad loves nature and makes it a part of his daily routine to feed the birds and rabbits in the morning and throughout the day many of them gather in our yard to eat and drink. But recently, my dad and I haven't seen a single rabbit where we live, and all of the common stray dogs that sometimes come to our yard to drink have mysteriously disappeared, I have no idea if any of this is connected but it was just too strange not to include. Well that's all, sorry for the long post but if were to post this somewhere where anyone would actually believe me this would be the place. If any of you have any ideas on to what this could be please let me know. If enough of you like this I might even make a video on my channel dedicated to this. I'll do an update if anything else happens.

I love listening to your stories and hearing your nice and soothing voice thru my headphones at night. Your stories always help me fall asleep at night. Especially these super long hour+ scary story compilations, bcus i can usually play one of these really long videos and fall asleep, and not have to worry about getting woken up in the middle of my slumber from the video ending and having to wake up and scroll thru to find another long enough video to last me while I try and fully fall back asleep again lol. Skin walkers are a Native American thing, they're are NOT something found outside of the US. Love hearing the stories, but I hate when someone sees something weird and just assumes it's a skin walker.
angela yazzie if you go into /x/ or Reddit, where you'll find most of the stories on these channels, skinwalker ends up becoming an umbrella term for other similar beings like fleshgaits and wendigos
ye naldooshi (or however you spell it) refers to the navajo type of skinwalker, but there are tales of very similar beings on every continent besides antarctica. Skinwalker, being an english term, has come to refer to any kind of witch or medicine man that uses their power and ingenuity to wear the skins of animals and add said animal's power to their own. Furthermore, the skinwalkers I've known (actual Navajo skinwalkers btw) were all able to act like "normal" members of society, though most people can tell there's something wrong about them, and they almost always smell faintly of rotten meat and old blood. They usually like to stay near where they live, but they can move to new places, like different states or even to different countries.
Great stories. I lived in Rapid City, SD for 6 years and used to hike in the Petrified Forest. I had some very frightening encounters . Not sure what it was , but after listening to these stories, it could very well have been a SkinWalker.

The first story was most likely neither a Wendigo nor a Skinwalker. Skinwalkers in Sweden isn't a thing that should even be considered as they're an American Native thing. It was most likely a Fleshgait or something completely different and new. Fleshgaits are basically skinwalkers but they were never human to begin with, as to compare with Skinwalkers whom start out as shamans who delve into dark magic or murder to gain power.

The one with the two college students, the chuffing deer, and the big dog: I think what these ladies witnessed was ordinary Whitetail Deer communication. The description of the vocalizations and body postures are not unusual-common in fact. I think they surprised the deer and their behaviour was a response to that. I think this is a case of two young people who don't know very much about the behaviour of wild animals and who were shocked, then subsequently frightened, by what they saw. Deer don't just stand about quietly and placidly in pretty poses-they actually have some very strange-looking behaviours and make rather startling sounds. The big clue for me that these were real deer was the witness's description of the way the one animal "walked" on its hind legs-like a dog as opposed to a person. The usual Skinwalker stories have the animal walk like a person or a broken doll. The first one they encountered, with its "arm against a tree" was probably feeding on high browse. Note: Real deer are not always frightened by the presence of humans, especially if they live close to people and have become habituated such as these deer would have been. I mention this just in case someone thinks that real deer would have run away immediately.
Cynthia Olen completely agree. I don't see a lot of deer around my parts, but a friend on Instagram posts videos of the deer in her area. A recent video showed them sort of running away from her but stopping to turn and make hissing sounds at her, and they looked very angry lol. Would certainly be very spooky if you weren't aware of that behavior.
They would have run screaming if they had heard a wild pig chattering in the bushes! And fox screams?...eerie! Skunks having a screeching territory fight sound like several women being axe murdered all at once (had that happen under my house, once). Yeah, nature is full of freaky sights and sounds! LOL

Luke Mcfillen when I used to smoke, and went outside at night, alone ofcourse, I felt jumpy and nervous. I never looked up at any other houseroofes, in fear of seeing something. I feel a bit nervous about looking out through one of their huge windows. If they ask me to go outside now in the dark, since I quit smoking, I actually say nope, and tell them that I'll do it before I go home. Or until neighbors starts to wake up and walking their dogs. But not at 2 in the morning, when the whole village (sort of) is sleeping. Typing it here, right now, I sound pretty childish. 😂

But my little yorkie is very alert, if she stays calm, I do too.

Good stories! I have a couple myself but am afraid to tell em to anyone for skin walker stories are sort of taboo in my culture since I’m Native American myself. However, if they’re told by non-Native American then it’s acceptive. I rather tell it in a private chat room because some of these stories could cross back to hauntings in this day in age. But you’re doing good with these ones. Just all so frightening to be listening to them when things on the outside are lurking about in the dark.

PERSONAL ENCOUNTER WITH SKINWALKER:
First of all I would like to say that I have been obsessed with skinwalkers for the past 6 or 7 months, I know a lot about them and since I live in new Mexico i was hopeful that I could maybe spot one someday. Now on to the story; So about a month or so ago I was having a sleepover with my friend and being the rebellious teenagers we are we were gonna do ding dong ditch. So it's about 11:00 o'clock at night with no moon so it's very dark. We were laughing and messing around, (keep in mind my house is at the top of a hill and is just up the street from an intersection) we had just turned on to another street and were almost to the bottom of another hill, and that's when my friend noticed that about 500 yards away was this black figure and she asked what it was, I figured it was a trash can and so I turned on my phone light planning to show her and tease her about the big scary trashcan. But when I shone the light in that direction a pair of glowing eyes met our gaze. I froze and started to notice it's features; at first I thought it was a dog since stray dogs are super common where I live, and that's exactly what it looked like except for the fact that it was right near a mailbox and was just as tall as it if not bigger. It was on all fours, black, furry, but...I shit you not...its paws were backwards. So there we were, all three of us in the middle of the street frozen. Then my friend just yelped and started running towards my house. Ofcourse with my shitty physical condition my hip popped and I couldn't run so she had to grab my hand and practically drag me up the hill and my long ass driveway. When we got home we flopped onto the couch and just started laughing, and that's that I remembered that a week prior my other friend and I were lighting fireworks outside (again around 11 o'clock ) and we heard screaming, and not just like playing around screaming, blood curdling screaming. This went on and off for about an hour (during that time my friend pulled out her phone and recorded it if any of you want to hear it let me know) so me being stupid once again wanted to find where it was coming from. So we followed the screaming to the house right next to mine (there is about an acre separating us) and we listened for about 3 minutes considering what to do. Then the screaming started shifting to the house next to that, and once again we stood there for a bit trying to decide what type of situation this was. And then it shifted again, only this time it didn't just stay at one house, it kept moving from house to house. Eventually the screaming paused and we again stood in the street for quite some time deciding whether or not to call the police (for whatever reason we didn't) and then we both agreed to just go inside since it had stopped for a good 15 minutes. Looking back on it now I probably would have ended up doing more but as far as we know no one was hurt or killed which is what leads me to believe these two stories are connected. So now to more recent events, a couple weeks ago I was up late about 2:30 doing laundry (our laundry machines are located between our kitchen and my dads bathroom right next to our back door where my two big dogs are.) when I heard a distinct tapping on the kitchen window, and I froze and turned off the laundry room light because the window is in clear view of where I was standing. So then logical me kicked in thinking that it was just one of my dogs messing around, so I decided to open the back door to give them a treat, but they were no where to be seen which was odd but our backyard is about half an acre of land so they were most likely play fighting then chased eachother to another part of the yard. I then proceeded doing laundry only to hear the noise once again except louder, but the most creepy part was that it had knocked in the same rhythm as it did before. So the events that had occurred recently came to mind and I decided that it was highly likely to be a skinwalker. So I finished up my laundry, closed all of the blinds and made sure the door was locked. That night when I was laying in bed I remembered I had to clean a fish tank, (I have a bunch of pets at my house and do pet chores weekly) but then I felt dread remembering that when I clean my fish tanks I dump the buckets of dirty water outside, and if there was something outside I certainly wasn't going out there. I ended up not doing the water change but now I'm thinking about the possibility that whatever had tapped on the window had been watching me and learned my routine of having to go outside to dump the water. (it's safe to say that I always make sure to do pet chores during the day now.) and lastly the most recent of odd occurrences. My dad and I don't live in the country per say, but our neighborhood isn't exactly suburban, and we live way out in the desert where seeing coyotes, rabbits, snakes isn't rare. My dad loves nature and makes it a part of his daily routine to feed the birds and rabbits in the morning and throughout the day many of them gather in our yard to eat and drink. But recently, my dad and I haven't seen a single rabbit where we live, and all of the common stray dogs that sometimes come to our yard to drink have mysteriously disappeared, I have no idea if any of this is connected but it was just too strange not to include. Well that's all, sorry for the long post but if were to post this somewhere where anyone would actually believe me this would be the place. If any of you have any ideas on to what this could be please let me know. If enough of you like this I might even make a video on my channel dedicated to this. I'll do an update if anything else happens.

I'm so glad I came across this channel almost a year ago. This has been one of my top favorite horror story channels ever! I love listening to your stories and hearing your nice and soothing voice thru my headphones at night. Your stories always help me fall asleep at night. Especially these super long hour+ scary story compilations, bcus i can usually play one of these really long videos and fall asleep, and not have to worry about getting woken up in the middle of my slumber from the video ending and having to wake up and scroll thru to find another long enough video to last me while I try and fully fall back asleep again lol. Skin walkers are a Native American thing, they're are NOT something found outside of the US. Love hearing the stories, but I hate when someone sees something weird and just assumes it's a skin walker.
angela yazzie if you go into /x/ or Reddit, where you'll find most of the stories on these channels, skinwalker ends up becoming an umbrella term for other similar beings like fleshgaits and wendigos
ye naldooshi (or however you spell it) refers to the navajo type of skinwalker, but there are tales of very similar beings on every continent besides antarctica. Skinwalker, being an english term, has come to refer to any kind of witch or medicine man that uses their power and ingenuity to wear the skins of animals and add said animal's power to their own. Furthermore, the skinwalkers I've known (actual Navajo skinwalkers btw) were all able to act like "normal" members of society, though most people can tell there's something wrong about them, and they almost always smell faintly of rotten meat and old blood. They usually like to stay near where they live, but they can move to new places, like different states or even to different countries.

Great stories. I lived in Rapid City, SD for 6 years and used to hike in the Petrified Forest. I had some very frightening encounters . Not sure what it was , but after listening to these stories, it could very well have been a SkinWalker.

The first story was most likely neither a Wendigo nor a Skinwalker. Skinwalkers in Sweden isn't a thing that should even be considered as they're an American Native thing.
It was most likely a Fleshgait or something completely different and new. Fleshgaits are basically skinwalkers but they were never human to begin with, as to compare with Skinwalkers whom start out as shamans who delve into dark magic or murder to gain power.

The one with the two college students, the chuffing deer, and the big dog: I think what these ladies witnessed was ordinary Whitetail Deer communication. The description of the vocalizations and body postures are not unusual-common in fact. I think they surprised the deer and their behaviour was a response to that. I think this is a case of two young people who don't know very much about the behaviour of wild animals and who were shocked, then subsequently frightened, by what they saw. Deer don't just stand about quietly and placidly in pretty poses-they actually have some very strange-looking behaviours and make rather startling sounds. The big clue for me that these were real deer was the witness's description of the way the one animal "walked" on its hind legs-like a dog as opposed to a person. The usual Skinwalker stories have the animal walk like a person or a broken doll. The first one they encountered, with its "arm against a tree" was probably feeding on high browse. Note: Real deer are not always frightened by the presence of humans, especially if they live close to people and have become habituated such as these deer would have been. I mention this just in case someone thinks that real deer would have run away immediately.
Cynthia Olen completely agree. I don't see a lot of deer around my parts, but a friend on Instagram posts videos of the deer in her area. A recent video showed them sort of running away from her but stopping to turn and make hissing sounds at her, and they looked very angry lol. Would certainly be very spooky if you weren't aware of that behavior.
They would have run screaming if they had heard a wild pig chattering in the bushes! And fox screams?...eerie! Skunks having a screeching territory fight sound like several women being axe murdered all at once (had that happen under my house, once). Yeah, nature is full of freaky sights and sounds! LOL

Luke Mcfillen when I used to smoke, and went outside at night, alone ofcourse, I felt jumpy and nervous. I never looked up at any other houseroofes, in fear of seeing something. I feel a bit nervous about looking out through one of their huge windows. If they ask me to go outside now in the dark, since I quit smoking, I actually say nope, and tell them that I'll do it before I go home. Or until neighbors starts to wake up and walking their dogs. But not at 2 in the morning, when the whole village (sort of) is sleeping. Typing it here, right now, I sound pretty childish. 😂

But my little yorkie is very alert, if she stays calm, I do too.
This is so funny! I used to think the same thing, when I used to smoke! Sometimes I took the dogs from work with me on the porch. They are not the smartest tools in the shed, but they might keep "the things" out there busy enough for me to get inside. It's a horrible way to think like that about their dogs, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do to survive, right? =)

Good stories! I have a couple myself but am afraid to tell em to anyone for skin walker stories are sort of taboo in my culture since I’m Native American myself. However, if they’re told by non-Native American then it’s acceptive. I rather tell it in a private chat room because some of these stories could cross back to hauntings in this day in age. But you’re doing good with these ones. Just all so frightening to be listening to them when things on the outside are lurking about in the dark.
