Defunct coasters are often shrouded in mystery, blinding those who had the chance to experience them with nostalgia. Are these famous defunct coasters actually any good? Would they be able to stand up in a world of modern tech if they can no longer rely on historic impact? What do you think?!
Really interesting video Jack with well thought-out commentary, I really agree with your thoughts on the departed rides. I’m not quite old enough for Crystal Beach Cyclone, but I have done a few of these, Vortex - Kings Island - Just awful. Jank is the word. Great American Scream Machine - Six Flags Great Adventure This was actually better than Green Lantern that replaced it Big Bad Wolf - BGW Basically America’s version of Vampire. It was what the swinging coaster should be, using the terrain to go on a real adventure. However Verbolten is an amazing replacement and has a lot of loving nods back to the ride it replaced. Volcano The Blast Coaster - Kings Dominion The long queue was always an ordeal but the ride was worth it - the inversions were like doing cartwheels up in the air, really fun but very, very short. Dodonpa - like having your heart restarted by a defibrillator such a sudden shock when it launched, so sad it’s gone. Son of Beast - Kings Island The loop was the best part, the rest of the ride beat you mercilessly Top Thrill Dragster - Cedar Point The lap bars made this one, this one hurts the most. Duelling Dragons - IOA The coasters were some of the lower tier B&M inverters and never had more than a 5min wait. I preferred the blue one as it minced about doing weird things inverters don’t normally do to line up with the other side. Hagrid’s is so good though, we can forgive them for slaying the dragons.
thank you for your in depth comment Stu! It’s great to hear your thoughts on these, you’re very lucky to have experienced most of them! Dragster I would’ve loved to have done (and Ka) did you get to do top thrill 2 last year? And interesting to hear you say that about duelling dragons! I’m obsessed with the idea of them; maybe I didn’t do a great job of peeling away the nostalgia as I thought! Though I can agree Hagrid’s is an awesome replacement :D
2024 has shown that nostalgia isn't the way forward for theme parks, however, some coasters were taken too soon, but there are some coasters still around that have out stayed their welcome. Some of these I would love to have done.
to be honest I think I would have really enjoyed big bad wolf, i have severe fomo from that one. But i think fear of missing out affects how people look at rides and attractions. But you are right nostalgia affects everything :,) great video btw
Thank you!!! I need to get back on Vampire to remind me what BBW could’ve been like! (Haven’t been to Chessington in over a decade lol) 2024 was a rough year for fomo with so many unique coasters closing, my resolution is to prioritise endangered coasters!
I was lucky enough to do all of these besides Ring Racer and Moonsault Scramble and yet Big Bad Wolf is one of the ones I miss the most. (TTD tops the list for sure.) Dueling Dragons was also incredible, especially back when it still dueled, and it remains my favorite queue of all time.
Interesting! To be honest I haven’t ridden many old Arrows and for its time it would’ve been fantastic. However, I think nowadays people would ride once, get a headache, then go reride more modern coasters with better elements!
Nice! Batman and Robin almost made it into this video but I thought there would’ve been too many launch coasters! Never heard of Rye Airplane before but it looks great!
@ Rye airplanes was built in the 1920’s and demolished in 1957. It was supposed to have been a really intense coaster maybe the same as Crystal Beach Cyclone

Totally agree! If only we could run the theme park world and make sure no coaster closed too soon ever again :D
Zimmerman jump scare at 13:26 🫣
Sorry I should’ve put a trigger warning ;D
not going to lie i dream about duelling dragons
Not going to lie, me too!

Awesome, you’re a lucky guy! Wish I had the opportunity to experience even one or two of them!
Vortex at KI would still be a popular ride at the park today similar to viper

Interesting video!!!
Thanks Miranda! Do you have one that would would’ve ridden? :)
My defunct coaster bucket list is
Orient Express
Dragon Challenge
Batman/Robin Chiller
Kingda Ka
Original Bat
Crystal Beach Cyclone
Rye Airplanes

Fortunately, I was able to ride volcano in 2017 before it closed forever
Lucky! Looked really unique
Yeah just looked into it, looks awesome!
I really want to go to Japan
Oh yeahhh, imagine if Do-Dodonpa was still open 😍
