It's the appropriate response, though. You shouldn't respond seriously when someone decides to take stories told in jest as serious news as if they're reporting on something real. I wouldn't say anything was "fake", necessarily. But that the outrage is preposterous, because it relies on bad faith interpretation of the conversation had on a comedy podcast, that's a position I could take.
That the entire story is fake? That seems incorrect on the face of it. Exaggerated for comedic effect, definitely. Told without caveats and normal politeness, because of the format of the conversation, absolutely. But not "fake".
