The fact that XG is capable of showing the RAW and visceral side of their production via xtra xtra shows that this group is in it because of passion. It's not just a money grab. And I'm not saying this as a jab to the industry as a whole (*cough cough), but the truth is, XG is truly doing it differently. As fans and consumers of their music, we couldn't be more detached from the production process, and yet, we can feel the sincerity behind their musical choices. I'm just happy that I'm here for it and can't wait for their future!
I appreciate that you were the first reactor who understood X-Gene was basically an introduction to the album and who XG is and didn't complain about the song being too short. I think albums have gotten away from having concepts, thus getting away from having interludes and a prelude like Hesonoo and a short song that is an intro to the album. And that what X-Gene is, this is our rap line and what they can do, this is our vocal line and what we can do. Who we are, we are 7 women (x gene) who are 1, we are going to give you 100%, whether you love or hate us we are going to be us and give you nothing you've seen before. This album is our beta test 4 songs in totally different styles so you can see what we are capable of.

I remember when I got tired of the over sexualization of women in western music (it just became a bit too much for me) then I discovered K-pop and was mesmerized by how feminine and cute the girls were. But with XG, there’s just something special about them. I AM NOT COMPARING THEM BUT the only group I’ve been this invested in was BTS. And I’m no noob, I Stan many groups but bts has always been number one. Now xg is right there next to them
I GET IT though!!! There are so many great groups out there but I seriously got obsessed with XG as soon as I really discovered them. They're just DIFFERENT.
"THIS GROUP IF PERFECTLY PUT TOGETHER" IS SO ACCURATE. LIKE SIMON WAS A GENIUS FOR CHOOSING ALL THESE GIRLS TO DEBUT TOGETHER BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS SO BALANCED FROM VOCALS, RAP, DANCE, AND VISUALS, AND CHEMISTRY. THEY ARE JUST EVERYTHING.
EVERYTHINGGGGG. Like, I cannot get over it! Their overall talent, firstly. But then the different styles and tones in the vocals. And even the way they physically look together - they are like dolls where you have the same basic frame, but then you can customize the specific look, hair colour, clothes, etc. That's them. They match each other PERFECTLY but each have their own individual styles and vibes. And they work really hard to be soooooo unified, without losing that individualism. It's incredible. And then the balance of strong dance & charisma & star quality they ALL have. Simon is truly a genius. And these girls are phenomenal artists.

Completely agree! I was obsessed with the Shooting Star and Left Right performances. And I feel like they have pushed the envelope with the art direction of the TGIF and Puppet Show MVs, really leaning into the bizarre/unique/fantastical visuals. Such all around talent! It's like.... YESSS! So, Shooting Star and LEFT RIGHT kind of introduced us to this big budget, highly edited kind of music video style but TGIF reeeeaaalllllyyyyyy went there with creating their own world. So now it feels like PUPPET SHOW combined the sound & feel of the earlier songs with this fantastical visual world of TGIF and it's all put together so brilliantly. Amazinggg.

Khadija!!! You gave me all I wanted to see on this XG mini album reaction. I was so excited for the lead up to you watching Puppet Show! Your reaction was everything -- love your "ad lib commentary" 😂. Yes, the harmonies, R&B runs and ad libs were EVERYTHING in this song. Juria, Jurin and Maya's presence when in focus in Puppet Show were extra extra amazing. Visuals and mood were sooo riveting. The drumb beat style fast rap for the rap line was fire as well, they just never miss in my book and I am literally playing every song and every video on repeat every day. Sigh. Also, in case you haven't watched yet, I've been totally into Maya and Cocona's rap song they put together for Street Woman Fighter Season 2's Tsubakill dance crew called "Show You Can". There is a killer lyric video out, as well as a performance video or two from Tsubakill. The rap/song itself is a throwback for me to the grimey funkie marching band days of my youth -- when we'd have a dance break and the drum line and brass section would just go off...(just me? 🤣)

Hi Khadija, it’s been awhile. Awesome deep dive on the album. Did you know that Rachel West, the songwriter for Puppet Show and GRL GVNG actually did some backing vocals and ad-libs on Puppet Show?. You can hear her parts when Harvey comes in with her singing “ah ah ah ah”. Then the chorus parts singing the last words of the verses. And it goes on for the rest. The last chorus ad-libs were Chisa when Maya is singing the chorus parts and then with Jurin, it’s Juria and hitting that high note. I have to say the production of this song is great. The messages especially the lyrics. I love the fact that Simon and XG had Rachel do some vocals shows they respect and appreciate her so much. It’s so XG
@@MarkCalicaAhh that's very cool, though. Yeah, often a songwriter will record a demo version of the song for the artists to hear.... and the final version might have some of those demo recordings left in cuz they just sound great! I love that for her!
Anyone else noticing the interesting change or progession in this group? Look at how Mature they looked in Tippy Toes and Mascara? Almost like they are aging backwards or starting off on Earth and then by Shooting Star they are about to transport into a new world. Left And Right shows them in a spaceship heading to that new world/planet and then you get to Girl Gang and they made it to that planet and have become the dominant species. Its the most interesting concept/packaging Ive seen. Almost like the reverse of how Aespa has did it.
Hmmmm that's an interesting point. I do think they were more mature in those earlier videos but I guess those seemed more like the generic "hard" concept to me. Now, they've evolved into something totally unique and their own and I love it!

Favorite songs on the album are New Dance and Xgene with Xgene close behind it I think if you ever have the chance, finishing their documentary is probably for the best so you can see the journey and work it took for them to get as good as they are. I would love to subscribe on Patreon and will see if I can soon so I can keep up with the documentary reactions. But, truly, XG is completely different from everyone else I've ever seen in my life. There is just something so unique and carefully crafted about them...!

Oneus’ new comeback hasn’t left my head for days. Every other thought is BAILA BAILA CONMEEEEGOOEEE it’s a gorgeous song. I was really worried about their sound after Ravn left, because he was pretty instrumental in it, but between Erase Me and Baila Conmigo, I’ve been reassured. They still have their sound, but the other members have really stepped up, especially Leedo and Hwanwoong. I recommend you catch up on them. XG is one of my favorite girl groups. I do worry about them doing SO much…it feels like they aren’t carving a sound out for themselves, but are being shoved at a bit of everything. They did so much pre-album and it was really varied so I worried they wouldn’t be able to grasp onto a solid sound for themselves. Every group has a sound, in kpop I’ve noticed that the genre seems to be made up of what we westerners would consider many different other genres (pop, edm, r&b, hip-hop, jazz, disco, rock, techno, etc) and each group has this mix of genres they tend to use and that is what we get used to for a group. Does that make sense? It’s 5AM and I don’t know if I’m making sense. Some groups take on all those sub genres in their sound but they do it over a period of years so you have a lot of time to be acquainted with them and they get a hard following. I worry if they do too many too fast it’ll leave people with their brains spinning, or will have people pulling out the “noise music” card they use if the artists mix too many (like they like to use on NCT and StrayKids. But still, they did this over years and got a hard following in Czennies and Stays). I hope to see more from them, because they have so much talent.
I get what you mean. I think that's a criticism RiVerse made a lot of times over the years - it's hard to know WHAT a group's sound is cuz it's changing so often. But, I'm kind of in a place that I just see that as being part of k-pop. There are different styles and concepts and a group's ability to deliver each concept WELL is part of how talented they are. I think other groups doing too much too soon could hurt them, but I have a feeling XG will be okay. They are performing at such a HIGH level, that people are falling in love with just them as a group. So whatever they put out, they will still keep building a strong following based on the skill level alone. And as they continue, they can carve out their sound more and more. In a way, I kind of feel like 'Shooting Star,' 'LEFT RIGHT' and now 'PUPPET SHOW' have a very similar sound/style/formula. If I had to guess, I'd say XG's sound is along these lines. (P.S. Oneus is on the list! Thanks for the rec)

@@MarkCalicaAhh that's very cool, though. Yeah, often a songwriter will record a demo version of the song for the artists to hear.... and the final version might have some of those demo recordings left in cuz they just sound great! I love that for her!

Anyone else noticing the interesting change or progession in this group? Look at how Mature they looked in Tippy Toes and Mascara? Almost like they are aging backwards or starting off on Earth and then by Shooting Star they are about to transport into a new world. Left And Right shows them in a spaceship heading to that new world/planet and then you get to Girl Gang and they made it to that planet and have become the dominant species. Its the most interesting concept/packaging Ive seen. Almost like the reverse of how Aespa has did it.
Hmmmm that's an interesting point. I do think they were more mature in those earlier videos but I guess those seemed more like the generic "hard" concept to me. Now, they've evolved into something totally unique and their own and I love it!

But, truly, XG is completely different from everyone else I've ever seen in my life. There is just something so unique and carefully crafted about them...!

Oneus’ new comeback hasn’t left my head for days. Every other thought is BAILA BAILA CONMEEEEGOOEEE it’s a gorgeous song. I was really worried about their sound after Ravn left, because he was pretty instrumental in it, but between Erase Me and Baila Conmigo, I’ve been reassured. They still have their sound, but the other members have really stepped up, especially Leedo and Hwanwoong. I recommend you catch up on them.
XG is one of my favorite girl groups. I do worry about them doing SO much…it feels like they aren’t carving a sound out for themselves, but are being shoved at a bit of everything. They did so much pre-album and it was really varied so I worried they wouldn’t be able to grasp onto a solid sound for themselves. Every group has a sound, in kpop I’ve noticed that the genre seems to be made up of what we westerners would consider many different other genres (pop, edm, r&b, hip-hop, jazz, disco, rock, techno, etc) and each group has this mix of genres they tend to use and that is what we get used to for a group. Does that make sense? It’s 5AM and I don’t know if I’m making sense. Some groups take on all those sub genres in their sound but they do it over a period of years so you have a lot of time to be acquainted with them and they get a hard following. I worry if they do too many too fast it’ll leave people with their brains spinning, or will have people pulling out the “noise music” card they use if the artists mix too many (like they like to use on NCT and StrayKids. But still, they did this over years and got a hard following in Czennies and Stays). I hope to see more from them, because they have so much talent.
I get what you mean. I think that's a criticism RiVerse made a lot of times over the years - it's hard to know WHAT a group's sound is cuz it's changing so often. But, I'm kind of in a place that I just see that as being part of k-pop. There are different styles and concepts and a group's ability to deliver each concept WELL is part of how talented they are. I think other groups doing too much too soon could hurt them, but I have a feeling XG will be okay. They are performing at such a HIGH level, that people are falling in love with just them as a group. So whatever they put out, they will still keep building a strong following based on the skill level alone. And as they continue, they can carve out their sound more and more.
In a way, I kind of feel like 'Shooting Star,' 'LEFT RIGHT' and now 'PUPPET SHOW' have a very similar sound/style/formula. If I had to guess, I'd say XG's sound is along these lines.
