These birds are absolutely the sound of spring and summer. I’m so thankful to have grown up in the country and blessed to still live in the country. Best part of spring and summer nights is sitting out in the swing listening to the whippoorwills song their songs. 😊
Here in Western Oregon one of my favorite “sounds” of spring and summer is the call of the Swainsons thrush. It’s so beautiful echoing through the words that it almost brings me to tears when I hear it. It’s so haunting as it echoes through the forests in the ravine on the mountain side behind my house. The acoustics of the trees make it very ethereal.m.ruclips.net/video/lpLnRUnoJNQ/видео.html
I love to hear them sing, if you whistle back at them they will do it back at you , if you do it real fast they try to do it too & get confused, i just love them This is the first time I ever saw one'
With their camouflaged feathers, they sit still on the forest floor or a low branch during the day. They will fly if a predator is near or their nest is threatened, however.
I've rarely seen em at night. So dainty and we'll hidden but boy can they play a tune. I still drive out to the country on cool spring night, roll windows down at night shut off everything and listen.
I live on the edge of the city and one of these flew into my terrace and slept on the ground. It convinced me that not sweeping all the wood chips off the ground was a good choice. My studio faces my terrace so watching the little guy sleep while I worked was such a treat.
Thank you and thank God for this video my father and I looked for years for even just a photo of a whippoorwill, this is great!!! This is the best yet!
What a gorgeous little creature. We were hiking in the NJ Pinelands this evening and heard two of them. It was the first time we'd ever heard one but we knew exactly what it was because you could hear the distinct "whip poor will" sound. They are classified as "Special Concern" in NJ, which means they are on their way to being threatened and/or endangered if they are not protected. What a terribly sad world this would be without birds.
I’m always hearing these in my little farm town. Now I’ve been mostly in a city and it really sucks because I miss whistling to them and hearing them do it back 😔
We almost never have them in our care, so it was a rare opportunity to see one so up-close and personal. They really are magnificent. I missed the shot of him flying off, but you're right ... he blended in to his surroundings so completely (after flying off as well).
Beautiful little birds I think our area they were wiped out years ago when they sprayed the trees from the air for the tent caterpillars, gypsy moths (?) So sad we dont hear their night sounds any more 😢😢😢
I grew in an averaged-sized town, but there was a whippoorwill living in the next-door neighbor's tree. He/she sang every night in the summer, but I never saw him. One day, years later, I was walking in a park full of large oak trees. I walked by one and did a double-take, because nestled right up to the tree trunk was a whippoorwill, beautifully disguised against the bark. Sadly, there are no such birds where I live now, though there are a few in Highland County, Virginia. Loved your video!
I had one living in the woods that meet my property line. In the middle of the night, it would make its rounds just outside the windows of the first floor while loudly calling. It drove my cat insane night after night. Listening to the whippoorwill yelling its head off and running around the perimeter of the house with my cat chasing it from window to window in the middle of the night drove me insane. Yes, cute and funny but kind of annoying when you have to get up early for work. Whippoorwills don’t care if you get any sleep or not. LOL
It pains me to know these little guys are listed as nearly threatened. I had just donned on me a couple of nights ago that it's been a little over two decades since I had last heard one.
The bird honestly looks ill. Half opened eyelids and an aversion to flying are generally tell-tale signs of a sick bird. I'm glad he flew in the end though. Hopefully I'm wrong and he's doing well now. :) Pretty little birds.
The bird had collided with a window the day before. It was medicated, monitored, and checked over by a rehabber before being cleared for release. It flew well, once it decided to make a move (still can't believe that I didn't capture that on camera!). It was released late in the afternoon, but it probably was still a bit early for it to be really alert and active. I'm hopeful that it did well on release.
I mentioned in an earlier comment ... my camera corrects for fading light. This was around dusk, and after I stopped the video to start another, he flew off beautifully and I missed the shot. He was sleepy when we first brought him out, because he had been in a dark box, so we gave him the time he needed to wake up and get his bearings. It was unusual for us to have one in care, so I wanted to share the video - the chance to get such clear close-ups of one of these amazing little guys is rare.
@@tielmum very cool, but doesn’t answer the question. Why release during the day instead of at night? I’m simply curious; not saying that’s what you should have done. I wouldn’t know anyway; I’m just a lowly birdwatcher.
While watching this I started to think the poor little thing is nocturnal and is confused by the day light not knowing what to do. I paused the clip for a second then coming back to it I saw where someone posted the same thing. The little bird should have been put out at night. Maybe the sunshine hurts his/her eyes and that's why it is dosal. Maybe it is in shock with day life or so use to captivity is cannot adjust to the free world such as the prisoners I use to work with. Often prisoners return back to being in captivity because they cannot handle the real world anymore. I googled to hear what this bird sounded like. For nights in end something is in the tree where my bedroom is next to and others in my complex are going nuts too. Between the fireworks still going on every night and these 2 birds I literally am not sleeping. Some say it's an owl some day this bird some say it's an alarm clock but most say they are 2 birds. This bird is in NC but, maybe with our winds and eco system changing they are now in VA too. All I know is even with the windows down it is so very loud I had to sleep on my bathroom floor the other night.
Whippoorwill's endeavour to feast on souls departed at death. They tear into the soul as a hungry pack, rending, ripping, tearing, gobbling down as starved wolves would consume huge piles of minced meat. Success ensures they sing ceaselessly till sundown. Failure instantly silences them. Of course, there's no truth here but never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn!

I love the fact they love to respond regardless if it’s a human doing it.
I have an app on my phone trying to attract more can I?
Out of my 64 yr.s i have not yet to see one. I hear them all the time at night here in Georgia.
This bird is a mood all by itself...
They are nocturnal. He probably had no idea what to do in the daytime.
That's the truth.

Thought he looked asleep also lol
Kenny Hill That makes my heart happy! I love hearing them sing when my windows are up during the spring. 🌷🤗
They have such amazing camouflage. Not just the colours but irruptive patterns
He’s like, “let me sleep, dang y’all”
One lived near my grandmas house in WV. Grew up hearing it in the evenings but I have never seen one until right now. Thank you for posting.
evening release next time....
My first memory of living in The country,, bright stars and a sky that seemed to go on forever with the whipoorwills playing intro

I've never seen one of those birds before they're quite adorable

Awww lil sleepy boi
they sleep on the ground and fly at night. They're one of my favorite sounds at night and wish there were some in my neighborhood.
Love these birds especially their mating call... I'm from Massachusetts so I hear them most of the summer and it's so relaxing to hear...
I always called them toad birds lol we have them all over Alabama and Georgia. And the south in general. We only really hear them from 1-4AM

Wow he's bigger than I imagined they'd be. Love how his markings are like patch work and he's so easily camouflaged! Thanks for sharing!

'You're like, in no hurry at all'
'You're right, ma'am... I am not'
It’s nocturnal. He’s like, damn y’all
I’m supposed to be asleep right now
Mine is singing is soul out right now.
"Lady it's my bed time. Let me sleep awhile, and bring me back when it's dusk, then I'll be ready to go, but for now... 😴."
Bird blends in perfectly with mulch
Cute ☺️ The Waltons had an episode with the whipperwill call
Cutest little guys ever. I love the sounds they make.
When I moved here 27 years ago to this valley in Missouri I use to hear them. Now I don't hear a one even though it is still very remote here.
I sit on my porch every spring n summer listening to them♥️
Wow up in person very rare sight to behold
so beautiful with his mottled colors. His (her?) song is absolute music of summer and warm nights to come.
Such a cool bird. I listen to them all night, and they change their call in the morning.
BEAUTIFUL SWEET LITTLE WHIP POOR WILL 💞❤️
Not so cute when they are calling at 4:30 in the morning right outside my bedroom window.
Gorgeous wee creatures., colouring so perfect in tune with nature.
Beautiful little birds I think our area they were wiped out years ago when they sprayed the trees from the air for the tent caterpillars, gypsy moths (?) So sad we dont hear their night sounds any more 😢😢😢
He'll go after the second 40 winks. 😌
They're beautiful birds. I saw one once at the beginning of dusk high up in a maple.
God Bless You and Yours 😇
They look so awesome
Such a cool bird and Iove their call.
Aaaaaw little buddy is sleepy they are nocturnal hehe
When the whippoorwill
Whistles in the wind
Oh, you can whistle back
Oh, nice and chubby babyyyyyyyyyy

Awww, it's so cute. We have these, where I live, especially, during Spring & Summer.
That's because they eat insects. They retreat from the northern areas of their range for winter.
Why did. you space Your words
@Rocco B. me either
Yeah i thought it was very cute

That was on my birthday! 🖤
Love their call!
Poor thing just wants to sleep. I feel your pain bud!
Their defense is camouflage so they tend to sit still until a threat is gone … unless its another whip poor will thats the threat
He's like lady I'm trying to nap here lol
You can see he was still sleepy
Wow that’s amazing thanks for sharing and for being nice to it :)
My favorite little songster
Trying to release him in the middle of his night time when he wants to sleep. Whip-Poor-Will's are strictly nocturnal.
Amazing vid
It pains me to know these little guys are listed as nearly threatened. I had just donned on me a couple of nights ago that it's been a little over two decades since I had last heard one.
"He looks too blue to fly."
I found one of these injured what grains can i feed it... Anyone, please help me out. Would be great help.
Why??? Don’t they know it’s nocturnal??? Poor baby.. I hope they realized it and did the right thing to set it free.
Read my previous comments. It was dusk.
daytime release for nocturnal?
You are feeling sleepy sleeeeepy
Can these bird live in tropical countries like Singapore?
Do these show up in West Virginia? Maryland?
Yes we have them in WV
The problem is that they are strictly nocturnal. A night release would have been better.
They manly come out at night
thats a really cool looking bird
Why are you disturbing it
Congrats to you
Can you keep one as a pet please someone respond
Isn't that a nighthawk?
My Narcoleptic butt: "Yeah, same."
great to see them although they are very still
❤️
LOL he was trying to chill😂

Yeah, that's a fair assessment. I'm really glad it recovered though! Here's to hoping it's out and about and doing just fine. :)
It's a nocturnal bird. They are most active at dusk and full moon nights. He probably didn't know what was going on. It's not a day time bird
He's nocturnal.... He wanna sleep.
It’s the middle of the day. The poor guy’s dog tired!

Why doesn’t it get released at night?
Read the description.

Nocturnal ma’am!
He looks displeased
Must have been treated so well, he didn't want to leave lol
Just leave him alone, and he will go when he is ready

why at 2:17 is sound like a hit marker in bo3?
He believes he is invisible
Looks sleepy as all hell. Like u guys interrupted hims nap.lol
You should of released it at night
Poor fellow just wants to go back to bed
They're nocturnal.....release at dusk
Key word: aloof.
Did he fly? I hate videos like this, if you released him you should have shown in the video that he was well enough to fly. He didn't look well.
Read the description attached to the video.
@@tielmum Thank you! I was on my phone and didn't even think of that. Thank you for the lesson.
Reminds me of our teenager... awake at night & comatose during the day.
he looks all doobied up on reefers.

Jeez, stop poking at it and let it do it at it's own rate.
He looks too blue to fly.
It want make it long it's setting prey being n captivity messed him up
