Two important things to note, 1. I ran into problems with my install crashing VNC. All I chanced was VirtIO to AHCI and everything has worked flawlessly. I am unsure if this is specific to my hardware but I figured I ought to share my experience. 2. TrueNAS is slightly different now (12/3/21) than in this video, when he inputs two cores, that has been changed to vCPUs (virtual CPUs). If you are running a dual socket system, change this to two, otherwise move it back to 1. Instead change the number of Cores/Threads based on your system. I have a FX 8350 and 4 cores 1 Thread worked perfectly.
Hi and thanks for a good explination on running windows 10 on freenas. Now I got a couple of questions. 1) Will the virtual win10 hav access to the smb share as a normal pc? 2) If you install teamviwer, will it work as normal on the virtual win10 machine? 3) Can the Virtual win10 use the local USB ports on the freenas pc, and copy files to and from an external HD to the SMB share? 4) Or do you have an easy or fast way to transfer files to to an external USB Disk on the freenas server?
That brings the question, is his videos that well made, meaning he covered everything we MUST know or, is freeNAS an absolute magnificent peace of software? Well, it could be both....
I followed exactly what you did but I get the following after boot it up : Boot Failed. EFI DVD/CDROM Boot Failed. EFI DVD/CDROM 1 Boot Failed. EFI Misc Device . And then it boots into the UEFI Interactive Shell v.2.1
Hi and thanks for the video. I did as you showed , getting fedoras drivers but unfortunately windows is not recognising any suitable driver on that iso. I downloaded latest stable which is now 01.225 and i have a windows iso 21H1 . Any idea what could be wrong? Thanks.
I have succeeded with the older version of VirtIO drivers - 0.1.171-1. Newer ones (0.1.196 and 0.1.208) did not work for me, I had the same issues with machine crashing & VNC disconnected.
i have no internet connection even the driver is installed anyone know how to solve it the divce dont have ip add im giving it one but still no internet accses
That is a difficult questions to answer. You can run as many as you have resources for. Mostly pay attention to how much ram your using. You don't want to starve the TrueNas for memory

@@paulmarlow7176 the point I was making is he taps a random key at precisely the right moment (6m21s) to access the boot options. Doing that solved the problem for me. Good luck.
I spent the last hour struggling with this. Tried different settings, trying anything to get the install to be stable. Eventually the thing that did the trick was simply not using the virtio drivers. It's weird since the forums seem to indicate instability without them, but it's what worked for me. Just now booted into Windows with VNC.

Thank you so much for this! The other videos I found sucked. You make it so simple!
Keep the vids coming man, love your work. Thank you so much for the help with VM's in truenas :)
Great! It works! If you run into trouble locating drivers for Windows 10 install, go to DVD drive, AMD64, and W10
Thank you so much!
Perfect amount of detail and brevity. Good job.

Can't get the Virtio storage drivers to work with windows 7. Frustratingly, neither does the VM mouse input.

I would recommend using Proxmox to host your VMs
Do you need a spare drive or can you partition your drive that you use for freenas?
You can partition the drive, but having a second drive is always preferred for performance.
Thank you!!!!

There is a little work you have to do to get USB devices in the VM. I will put this on my video list.
After a little more looking into it. I would say that this is not feasible at this time.

Can we get OSX on a VM on FreeNAS??
Using TrueNAS with a Ubuntu VM, how can I use remote desktop from a windows 10 to connect to it?
Install OpenSSH onto your Ubuntu VM and connect using that, or use Remote Desktop (mstsc)
