Pretty sure someone once said something along the lines of, sharing is caring. Though, I haven't listened to that with all of my ghost plant props that are covering almost every available flat surface in my yard right now.
Since the pandemic I decided to start a garden and spend hours watching RUclips videos. I have several favorites but I must say Kevin you are my #1 go to for information. I have read your book and you make everything so clear that even a novice can comprehend everything. I am 73 and have a little trouble hearing some of the shows, but voice is marvelous and clear as a bell. Thank you so much for all you do.
So glad I saw this. I just planted five today and got a couple wrong. Now I’ve turned them around. Appreciate you taking the guesswork out if it! Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
I bet over 90% of those cuttings take. The resilience of cactus and succulents never ceases to amaze me. Also, if I lived anywhere close to you I'd happily take those throwaways off your hands!
I JUST got a dragon fruit plant yesterday and watched your entire series on it. I thought my you tube subscription list was messing up, showing me an old video of yours! Thanks for the update!
If you have any of those aerial roots near the bottom of your cutting, leave them on and put them in the soil when you pot the cutting. They will turn into underground roots and give your cutting a big head start on growing roots.
After cutting through flesh it’s good to coat in cinnamon, natural antiseptic, it’s also key time to angle cut to main stem to expose 1/2” for better rooting
The tour down memory lane growing your dragon fruit made my eyes watery I mean it especially cause I might receive my dragon fruit plants anytime tommorow or Thursday 😊 I'm so stoked about it!
1000th like. That was the first time I’ve ever done that before and I have had youtube since 2010. AND its on a video about dragonfruits which are my favorite and my mind is absolutely diluted its 5am and ive been awake since 7 am yesterday. NO SLEEP. 1000TH LIKE. DRAGONFRUITS. MY LIFE PEAKED.
My dragon fruit plant is so tiny! They’re incredibly sturdy. I had a piece I was propagating and my son knocked it over and I could not find it on the ground! I found it a week later and stuck it back and dirt and has new growth! I’m so impressed
Kevin… Thanks for this DF series. I grow them also, have had blooms that didn’t turn into fruit. I will try some of your tips this spring and summer. The flowers are so beautiful and mildly fragrant. The little spines, OMG… Like lethal weapons !!! Take care and Thanks Again. Debbie in N. Central Texas !
Since I’ve never had my questions answered here even after subscribing etc…. You need to pollinate with a non sterile version. I had the same thing happen to me . That variety bloomed but didn’t become fruit ….needed non sterile pollen. There’s other videos about self pollination
Please remember us beginners who need a source for cuttings to work with! I found my cuttings on Craig’s list...drawer made a little cash and I got a good variety of affordable cuttings to start with
Thank Kevin, for your good tips how to grow dragon fruit plant. I just started, so I am so excited to see my growing. Thank you again, I will let you know my progress on this big adventure in growing this exotic fruit.
Nice! We've been able to propagate well but not once getting them to flower. I think the pruning is going to make the difference as I've been to scared to trim back anything. Thank you for the tip!
Bought your book I love it! So i propagated (or tried to) a snake plant hahaha......so now I have what appears to be a squash plant growing I'm blown away at what's going on hahaha.
Omg, this is so helpful. I was given some last year and I had no clue how to take care of them. I’m so excited now. Do you have a video on what to fertilize them with? Thanks again.
I started my dragonfruit from seed about 2 years ago! It’s grown insane (and I live in Chicago and take it inside for the winter.) now I keep propagating and have so many I don’t even know what to do with them! Also wish you’d use something more sustainable than the plastic nursery tape. Thanks for the video!
Awesome! Mine needs to be potted up but I have been putting it off because I was afraid of hurting it. Now I’m feeling more brave. Will check out the playlist, I hope there’s a video that shows how to repot and how to know what size?
Thanks for the great dragon fruit videos, Kevin! Just saw you had a book today and bought it on Amazon and I'm looking forward to reading it this week! I noticed on an earlier video you cut the stem off about an inch up, as you said it wouldn't root well, but in the first one you planted on this video, you just planted it with the stem. Did you learn new information between the videos? What's the best way to plant it that you know of? Chop the stem up about an inch and let it heal over for 3 or so days before planting, or plant it with the little stem intact? Thanks again!
As a tip, I've had great success rooting them with the soil being maybe a third full in pots like that. Saved me 3x the soil, allowed me to put them in sun sooner, and because bottom of plant was in more shade I had more success getting them to push out new growth closer to the tops and more vertical reaching for light. Only down side is less insulation if in colder climates or places with more wind chill.
I’m pretty sure those pieces with a lot of roots on one side could be placed horizontally on your growth medium with the roots down and it would do awesome.
Here’s a tip! Cuttings with aerial roots will convert them into ground roots, skip the whole rooting process and you can already have a semi established root system
So about a month or two back I congratulated you on your super fast channel growth from I think 390k to 450k subscribers, now you're at 721k, that's crazy and you must be so proud that it's not only the plants you manage to grow! Lol.
@@epicgardening it really is! Imagine that: you nearly have the same amount of subscribers as people living in San Francisco, each with their own life yet watching you. It's such a hard number to actually comprehend. Crazy. Congratulations! And with the new garden there are many more on their way! By the way, I noticed your videos were "only" 1080p, have you thought about going for 1440p or even 4k? Even if the recording itself is only 1080p the higher bitrate that 1440p/4k get really help with all the foliage details.
Dragonfruit isnt actually a succulent although it looks like it. It's actually a tropical fruit which is heat/drought tolerant, but it actually loves water. That being said don't down your new cuttings :)
It’s a succulent. In fact, it’s a cactus. But it isn’t a desert cactus. Its native habitat is tropical rain forests of Central America and South America.
When I first moved into my spot there was a 20'+ tall dragon fruit growing over and through a fruitless olive tree, an avocado tree, and an avocado stump. Took me several weeks to clear the entire jungle. I'm probably going to experiment using tall avocado stumps as a base trellis for these, and see if I can recreate an avocado dragon fruit symbiance. 🤣
From my experience if you push the cutting that deep into the soil, you will get rot. I use a rooting hormone to get them going also. I'm running out of stock to root & graft, did some pruning earlier today.
I bought a yellow and a purple dragon fruit, and I'm so excited to them ripened right off the vine. I think they're bland in the store but I've heard they are so much tastier when you grow them. But, like, isn't everything? Haha
Ok so it’s 5y later so perhaps you will never see this but I grow epiphylums which are very similar to dragon fruit if not a an actual type of dragon fruit. So last year my very first dragon fruit bloomed simultaneously as my several epi’s. So for the first time ever my epi’s set fruit😮😮😮… So when it seems they were no longer progressing I cut open the “fruits” to investigate. They were the size of a walnut and once opened looked exactly like the white dragonfruit flesh. Naturally I had to take my life into my own hands and do a taste test… AND I am happy to report that it even tasted like a dragon fruit but much milder. Unfortunately the actual dragon did not set fruit…😢 So now I’m on the same dragon fruit journey as you are! I am trying to grow and propagate multiple varieties of DG… and I have taken them away from my epi’s… Thank you for your help and inspiration! I just bought your book, the first one. So excited. One of my epi’s grow a deep, brilliant fascia ad orange flower that blooms for 2-3 days… stunning.😍 Cheers!
When planting dragon fruit from cuttings and the cutting starts to grow those new stems/shoots/ sprouts which you have to prune can you plant those as well? And how fast do they grow? Do they grow slow like seeds or fast like the cuttings?
Nice! Why didn't you do a flesh to stem cut on middle cuttings of the branches? I think it leads to less rot. As long as you don't overwater, they should root fine. Also rooting hormone works too in my experience. Good luck moving the mother plant :)
Thank you!! We have drogon fruit trees growing up near the roof already but havent given us any fruit at all. Maybe its time to do this propagation. Thanks
Kevin: congrats on the house. So pumped for you. When propagating, how do you know which plants need drying out before replanting versus those that can just be thrust back into the soil right after pruning? Also, is rooting hormone only appropriate for wet propagation?
General rule of thumb I use is for cacti/succulents / LARGE cuts, let callous. soft-tissue cuttings, like basil etc, immediately into water. rooting hormone works in most situations, but is never 100% necessary
Instead of nursary tap for a more organize product I like to use Jute/Hemp twine/rope. I found I got too much microplastics from using garbage bags, and wire ties. I'm diligent to get them out but not all seeing :)
Thank you for the video! I have 4 cuttings and just gave my friend 1. Lots of small stems came out to the side. Should I try to tie them to the post now or wait a little longer. Omg, this is so helpful. I was given some last year and I had no clue how to take care of them. I’m so excited now. Do you have a video on what to fertilize them with? Thanks again.
I use chicken manure and you can find it at lowe's and it helps a lot. don't know why but it makes my dragon fruit flower a lot.

Ok do I still have to let the cut dry first
True
I have three aerial roots at the top of a cutting. Are you saying I can plant the cutting in my cactus mix upside down?
Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work. Take Care
Thanks so much for the tips!
Love it. Great video!
Hello new friend here watching from Philippines
Awesome vid kevin.
I forgot to train and stake my brothers dragon fruit (4+ years)
Hopefully I can make som more cuttings from it!
I’m growing dragonfruit too. I planted mine in a container this spring. It’s starting to grow fast.
Welcome to the club

they need a lot of sun, and you need to let them droop downward when they get to around 6-8 ft.
Thank you for such informative video tell me kindly for watering if I give daily much water or less or I give it once in a week ?
Depends on climate. When dirt is dry you can water. Typically once a week.
