MeetUp65: Storytelling Conference was visited by Michael Hoge, one of the founders of Piranha Bytes, responsible for the plot of the first part of the cult "Gothic" game. He also worked on subsequent parts of the saga, and in "Gothic 3", he even lent his image to the Nameless Hero. During the conversation, he talked about the secrets of working in the industry!
If this talk had been marketed correctly, there wouldn’t have been just five people in the audience. Five thousand people would have attended the conference just to see Mike Hoge.
He truely was missing in the later games of Piranha Bytes. Björn never was able to create a world that was as immersive and fun to be playing in as he was.
@captaineierstock2278 While reading your comment, I thought about, how Mike Hoge for Gothic is like Cor Angar for the Brotherhood ,
both being so devoted for the Thing,
while Björn Pankratz would be more like Cor Calom, self centered and more comittted to the thing, that HE think is right, rather than the thing itself. :p
Björn was the lead designer of Night of the Raven, which was really great. But basically, you are right.
They all did a great Job. Björn too.
@@bomfirit75 Yes! In fact, they all did a splendid job!
I often think, that Gothic maybe could have been as important as The Witcher, if this game was released years later,
when gaming became more common and was no "niche-market" anymore.
Maybe!
Fun fact, I randomly met Björn and Jenny once at a train station.
And as a hardcore Gothic Fanboy, of course I had to step up to them and tell them how Gothic really is the best game ever and wanted to thank them.
He was a bit off annoyed and his answer came out a bit rude. Jenny excused him for his rudeness, explainig, that they wanted to move on.
I think they were developing Elex 1 at that time and kind of wanted to forget that old and yeah kind of tragic story behind developing Gothic...
@@mrm1987 well its easy to shit on someone who at least tried to keep creating video games when the old team split up. It's not like Mike et. al. never were forced to leave the industry.
Michael Hoge altered the fate of hundreds, but he paid a high price for it...
He is weak... and has forgotten much... but he is alive! So happy to hear something from him and especially learn from him
Perfect!
You play Gothic several times and learn.
What a gem of a comment!
Took me a moment😅
❤
Someone organize a new event with Mike. Nobody even knew about his appearance due to poor marketing. I would have loved to come to the lecture and so would many of my friends, but no one knew about this event. Mike we are waiting again in Warsaw❤❤❤
Soo much background information, this is gold for the Gothic community!
Yeah, exactly and even more so for me who is creating board games from the inspiration of PC games and my favourite is the Gothic series 🙂
Wow, I played gothic 20 years ago, it's fascinating to hear him speak about the game after such a long time.
Legend!
A very interesting presentation!
I would love to see him working on remake
at this moment i think it's not possible due to this shitty remake have alerady planned story and there's no place anymore for Mike unfortunately.. im sure that if they hire Mike at the beginning of developing this would be really amazing remake cuz there's no person who know Gothic story more than him and also hes great designer of the original game - wasted potential of Gothic 1 to get good remake@@ordowikmezoik7013

Unfortunately there were only 5 people in the audience and the whole presentation had a pretty bad quality. A presenter always needs his own remote control device to decide on his own pace, when a new slide should come or not. Michael Hoge created one of the best and most immersive games I have ever played in my life. I hope he will come back with a better setup.
I know, right? It's strange to me that the creator of Gothic series is so undervalued.
. Im just happy to see a recent lecture
I agree, I was very happy with Mike Hoges presentation but the organizers made me very angry. This man is a visionary, who was implementing revolutionary RPG ideas 20 years ahead of everyone else, and you are rushing him to finish in some measly 30 minutes? Dont even give him his own controller for the presentation and have him ask for next after every slide? Insanely disrespectful all around to a great man and an absolute legend
It's a real pleasure to hear a master of his trade talk about his passion! I was very pleased to hear from Mike again and to see that he is well and truly up and running.
Thank you for the fantastic Gothic series! And thank you for sharing this super exciting lecture! :)

I see another legend has entered the commentary section😆😃
@@FarmerSlideJoeBob Hehe, thanks 😄 But "let's leave the church in the village" 😅
I am so grateful he is having this presentation, his work means so much for me.
I wish he would make a new game!
he is working on the gothic remake
@@henrikbuchholz1983 Did you watch the interview? He stated that he was shown the remake, but it not actually involved If I am right
@@rafaauwellknown4430 ah right it was kai rosenkranz
This Video was damn important and good to see Mike so well again :)
A true and honest presentation from one of the best! Thank you!
what I felt when playing gothic 2, was soul, I could actually see the intent behind it, back then in the mind of a child i ony saw the magic, but now I know its all about trying to actually make it alive and being aware of how that aliveness might work, awesome talk, thank you!
Danke Mike für das beste Rollenspiel aller Zeiten, Gothic 2 !
Mike's the reason we got The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077
How dare they develop a Gothic remake without you 😥
Nah, i think Alkimia is doing a good job so far.
I would rather say: "How dare a guy like Pankratz became his successor ar PB."
@@tomhack4318 I'm sure if he wanted to he would have been able to join Alkimia just like Kai Rosenkranz does. Also I dont want to play the defending role but putting all the blame on Björn for the fall of PB is a bit harsh, considering the old team decided to split up. Björn kept carrying the torch, even if the Gothic spirit got lost on the way.
There are Phoenix and Nemesis projects for this :)
Thank you Mike for this Presentation and the answers. It was really interresting how you explained the delevopment of gothic and also some background infomations. Vielen Dank Mann, Danke Mann, wirklich.
I love gothic no matter what. And it will always love it.
Thank you for the upload
Herr Hoge, vielen Dank für dieses Interview. Sie sind so großartig wie immer!❤
There's like 5 people there and the whole thing is a mess. What a disgrace, he needs to give speeches at better events. Still that was some good info on how the franchise came to be.
But his presentation is interesting and good IMO
what an important video! Thanks for uploading. Mike, you rock
We love you mike
Its so good to see him on screen again, Great Charisma.
this game was ahead of its time
I'm pretty sure after Gothic 3 when the nameless hero went thtough the portal with Xardas, he came out on the other end giving a talk about game design.
Michael Hoge! Just a legend! Thank you for my childhood, when i can't go to sleep without knowing what a hell swamp guys searching in a orc cemetery))
That man is a legend!
maksmon222 quoted Xardas speech from the intro of Gothic II. LOL.
One of the best game designers the world has ever seen.
He's the only one who can bring order to the gothic remake...
💯
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
How about we first wait and see how the remake actually turns out? I mean... even Mike here says "liked it, let's see how it ends up". Perhaps we get a great remake for a change?
Someone should have asked him how much weed they smoked to come up with the sect camp
Yeah man. The good old swamp weed will help everyone.
I love him
its a fucking shame that he wasnt allowed to end this. Please mike if you ever read this, just make a reading of this with 20€ entry and hundrets will come!
Mike was the soul of all Piranha games.
I miss him so much. What a gem lost in the sand! I hope that one day he will be able to emerge from it and shine in the sun as he did in the past.
I will wait, hope, and pray. I love Gothic like the first day, and Risen 1 is my only favorite. Never has a game come close to being it, but Risen 1 is pure love.
Michael Hoge, you're in my heart, and I'm proud of that and especially of you.
Mike, you are the star of my childhood. !❤🩹
Greetings from Russia! Huge thanks for creating these amazing games that turned out to be a significant part of my life and of many people around me! It was enlightening to learn from the first hands how these worlds came to be! Now, If only there would be more time for this presentation during the event...
Very interesting insight
Thanks for the presentation!
21:20 Yeah, that feeling quickly turned away once you learn that this is the basic sword for this chapter. I feel, to incentivise this more, they should have given that sword at least 10 more damage so that it's not just the same as a random sword. That's why I never even got that interaction until like 10 years later where I deliberately tried out how much certain NPCs would react.
That's going to be great! Even the first few slides about the Gothic idea. It's funny because I enjoyed Prince of Persia 3d A LOT before playing Gothic, even though it was pretty clunky sometimes. I wish modern games would follow these Principles more, an alive world, Items should really be benefitial, texts short but detailed, so you don't need a minimap, and so on. And all of this is much easier to achieve with a smaller world. Unfortunatly big maps are seen as a quality sign somehow :(
Thanks for this video.
Thanks a lot, Mike!
With love, respect and gratitude from connoisseurs of Gothic and Risen from the countries of the former USSR! Hurray!!!
Vielen Dank, Mike!

Rest assured, it still does feel like you're there when you turn on Gothic today.
God, the face he makes when asked about Gothic 3 gets me every time :)
Invite Michael Hoge again, please!
So much presentation left to do, so many more questions.
This man and his peers deserve an entire panel, not 45 minutes!
Hoge to bridge! :D

Great lecture! I hope to see Hoge working on some rpg in the future. Greetings from Brazil
Those two unfortunates asking for personal counselling when they were at the conference. Lol, and they didn't even understanded in the end. Imagine
Please join the Team of the Gothic Remake or create a New Studio and start the production of Gothic 4 ❤❤❤

While the modern gaming world constantly salivates over overpaid game designers rehashing old stuff, ultra realism in graphics and giant but empty procedural worlds Mike Hoge calmy presents how he invented a completely new genre with one hand and laid the cornerstones for one of the most beloved franchises in gaming ever with the other.
What a legend.
Jest słaby i wiele zapomniał.. Ale żyje! Postarzał się nasz Bezimienny :)
Brilliant und so sympathisch. Ich wünschte er würde nochmal was starten 😔
Hi Mike!!
17:30 😂 Ehrenmann
Antiholz, was machen sie da?

Uczy, prowadzi kursy, robi w Candy Valley Network. Chyba cienko przędzie niestety, robił gierkę Spacetime i założył własne studio, ale nie pykło.
at the end. nothing legendary. nothing happend as planed. just chaos 😂😂😂😂 thats it. nothing special behind it. no koney, no time, rushing out 😂😂😂😂😂😂 thats it
Thats your takeaway?
Lighting, sound etc were not handled well by the event organizer
