Space:1999 stopped airing after 1981 because there were so many royalties attached to it that it was too expensive for stations to carry it, not because it was out of fashion or the victim of diminished popularity.
I saw this movie at the cinema, before I'd seen the second season of Space: 1999, or even knew anything about the 2nd season. So, I had to figure out in my mind what was happening, like with Maya.
"Well, I think it would be very exciting to have a moon base. I used to watch this corny show called "Moon Base Alpha". It made no sense, but it was cool. Like, there was a base on the Moon. We should have a base on the Moon. It's 2018: why is there no base on the damn Moon?! There should be one, and we should go there... a lot." - Elon Musk, 2018, digitized
I can't believe a trailer made a few years later for a movie compilation could succeed in making it look worse than its TV show origins. Those credits look like hell!
@gadzooks004 i agree the lack of syndication reruns in the last twenty years is abysmal for the british american tv companies well you would have to ask them true only two seasons were produced so as a syndication sale it most likely was not looked well upon the internet conventions have kept this show alive certainly not the tv companies from both sides of the pond.
Why do producers changed the name of TV shows when they release episodes into theaters?.. It's like they want people to think they're going to see totally different movies..
I believe it's down if the show is percieved to have not been successful. S99 was a modest success, just too damn expensive to recoup. So they did this. Battlestar Galactica did the same thing, changed the title slightly, edited two episodes together.. .BSG did this alot on the 80s. Editing two episodes together into two hour movies.
yah, how horrible... the tv show deserved more respect than that... i'll take the hour-long tv episodes any time... woe to the unsuspecting moviegoer who wasn't aware that this was a compilation of tv episodes!
I saw Space 1999 in South Africa were it was dubbed into Afrikaans and called Alpha 1999 do you have any recording of Alpha 1999 in Afrikaans at all please or is there a sight were I can get the DVD of Alpha 1999 please
@DesiluTrek well it was the eighties computers and graphics were in thy're infancy then desilu trek the studio and star trek pretty obvious what your mind set is i will agree more imagination could of gone into the visuals
@DMAXful there is a nuclear explosion which causes the moon to leave Earth orbit, throwing it into deep space. Thing is this trailer is shit, it's from the second season. The first was the best and dark and well written. Star Trek started off well then bad writing turned it into a pile of shit too. I am a fan of both, because when they were good they were excellent. When they were bad they were trully terrible.
R.I.P. Martin Landau.
As a kid, the comics for space:1999 were amazing.

100% correct. Massively insulting to those who'd been loyal fans (of Y-1) trying to keep it alive.

My first ever look at "Destination Moonbase Alpha"!!! It was the 2 part Bringers of Wonder episodes spliced to make the "film", is my understanding. ©1978... OH the optimistim...unlike the hell of REAL Evil today... It was just for fun damnit... We Gen Xers had no idea just how good we still had it and believe me I SWORE never to sound like mom and dad.... still, I don't envy my grandkids' hell dodging today. Alright enough... THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE POST.....signed, an Alphan
