I hate that I can never decide if I like Whitney’s version or Mariah’s version better! Haha! They’re so different, but still both so emotional. Whitney’s version is just classic! Her voice is strong, powerful, and resonant. And she kept her version really traditional. Mariah’s was strong and resonant as well! But it was softly intimate, poetic, and melodically complex. And I know that eeeeveryone loves her whistles! And so do I of course haha! But I think it REALLY worked and payed off here. Cause soooooo many singers use their head voices for that, “Freeeeeee”. And it’s beautiful! I just think that using the whistle in that moment, made her version that much more special! And it was such a smart and tasteful choice to use her whistle register there. It is said that everybody had chills in velvety low notes she started with but at the moment she started belting and hit the whistle everybody started clapping, shouting and even crying, and people were interviewed outside and said that her rendition was the highlight of the night, she was there like an angel with a beautiful voice to remind people they were safe. Now I wish people from the other side of the World or in nerthern Central america can start feeling safe too.
I love Mariah's rendition because she isn't following everyone by trying to hit those hit/loud notes on the same words that everyone else does, rather she does her own thing with soft tones and those runs and just like when she does a cover song, she makes it her own.
