Dirch Passer yes, the Danish Rodney Dangerfield of sorts. And much like the cases of Tiny Tim and Tommy Cooper, he practically died on stage in 1980 shortly after curtain call collapsing backstage.
In the original version, Reptilicus actually flew, but that part was cut for the US version for being too silly...y'know, as opposed to everything else...
YES!!! I saw this on a local UHF TV station way back in the 70'S . Loved it. Of course you did leave out the night life in Copenhagen. One of the truly great awful movies ever. Thanks for the review.
Actually, the U.S. version is dubbed in English. The original soundtrack was also in English but the accents were so hard to understand, it was re-recorded with American voice actors trying to put on a slight accent. The scene of the father getting eaten looked a lot better on theater screens because you couldn't see the blue screen out line. The American version is the better one to see if for no other reason than the green acid slime, which is not in the foreign version. However, in the foreign version you do get to see the monster fly. Actually he must be using the force to fly since the wings never flap. You also get to see the monster's foot smash into the roof of a house. The same house that the family is in where the dad gets eaten. But that scene with the dad was also added only in the U.S. version. Also in the foreign version you get to see more girls in bikinis at the beach, as well as some shirtless scenes with the main young male star. There is also a few scenes of the monster smashing some tanks or flipping them over. Last but not least, a lot of the monster's scenes in the foreign version are not slowed down. This really gives off the impression that the monster is a small puppet. Oh wait, it is a puppet.
@@greggrobinson5116 No, I'm not the director's son. lol I've just studied a lot about this movie as well as many other horror/sci-fi movies. Those genres have always been my passion, so when I see a movie that grabs my attention, I usually try to find out as much as I can about it. When it comes to "Reptilicus", there's a wealth of info available concerning it's production, director, etc.
Yes Claus Toksvig was a news reader. He moved to New York with his family in 1967 to be a foreign correspondent for the danish television (DR), and later to London. Claus Toksvig reported on the Apollo 11 mission to danish viewers.
This was one of several sci Fi/horror films from around this period which were novelized in the US by Dean Owen. Others included GORGO, and KONGA as paperbacks. They included what was considered some mild erotica for the early 1960s. I believe PANIC IN THE YEAR ZERO also was in this series by Owen.
If you look closely, one of the citizens of Copenhagen almost executes a one and a half when the bridge opens. I used to call this flick, "Ridiculous."
Thank you Thank you so so much for reviewing this!!! I love this film for it's heavy cheesiness haha! Thank you ever so much again!!! I loved this review lol I heard that this film was to have a sequel in the 90's to compete with Godzilla 1998 but it never happened. and thank you again! I look forward to even more reviews from ya! :D
The "sequel baiting ending" is not endemic to Japanese kaiju movies - it comes from American monster movies, such as "The Blob" and others. The denouements in "Godzilla" and "Rodan" is pretty final, and Toho didn't start leaving endings open until "Mothra" in 1961 and didn't become a trope until after "King Kong vs. Godzilla" the following year.
Dark Corners just exposed the fact that the monster could barely operate on land and had wings that were useless. Why didn't they use the bicycle weapon? The lady scientist after the military was beaten back should have said when triggered by looking at a bicycle: "We could stack huge rings of bicycles around the monster like Czech hedgehogs till the stumbling monster wears itself out trying to move." She makes an impassioned plea on the TV and radio for Danes to bring out their bicycles and stop the monster. Instead of the monster going after the population, the population goes after the monster in an uplifting twist. There are kids and the elderly donating bicycles. Everyone can make a difference. Well, maybe if there is a sequel.
Dark Corners Reviews Thanks. I followed the mystery box to the link and the information there said the flying scene was deleted in the American version by American International Pictures due to poor special effects. It is amazing AIP rejected something due to poor special effects considering their own domestic productions. I guess while the flying scenes were deleted, the spitting and eating the people scenes, which to me were far worse in quality than the shown flying scenes, were kept. Instead of making some clay human figure and feeding it into the mouth with stop motion filming so that the movements between the monster and victim, lighting, shadows, colors and dpi seamlessly matched, it appears they decided to glue two dimensional cutouts of the victim on transparencies and shoot the monster footage through those in stop motion. The spitting was the same thing. They could have at least run a tube from the back of the monsters throat and shoot dyed water out of the monster's mouth. Were the monster scenes shot and later the producer decided we must show it eating people and spitting - glue some stuff in because the money has already been exhausted on the model monster work? I wonder what decision making processes by supposed professionals led to this? These are some of those things that at the point one feels inadequate or incompetent about one's self, one can look at this work and feel good about one's self.
You should see the import version. The monster does a lot more destruction plus he uses his wings & flies......well sort of. But only the U.S. version has the monster spitting out the green acid slime. This movie really should get remade. I'm actually surprised that with today's technology, more kaiju movies aren't made.
By any chance, have you reviewed the Quatermass films (Quatermass Xperiment, Quatermass II, Quatermass & The Pit, Quatermass Conclusion and even the pseudo-Quatermass film "X, the Unknown"). Hammer tried to appropriate Quatermass for X, The Unknown but were shot down by creator Nigel Kneale. Now, I'm referring to the Hammer Films not the six-part serials that appeared on BBC Television. The first two movies, along with X, featured American actors in the lead, in a bid to sell the movie to American distributors (Hammer also did this with "The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas" and "The Trollenberg Terror," both with Forrest Tucker; you definitely need to review that second one). The last two Quatermass-titled movies had British casts.
Actually it is dubbed. Bu they did two versions, one in Danish and one in English, almost done to match each other frame by frame, with the same Danish actors. But in the English ones, the Danish accents were so hard to understand that they decided to dub it over with English voice actors.
If Lars von trier did do a sequel therdd Ed be a scene where the female scientist would have a flashback to when she had made love to reptile is, uncensored. It would explain the green splooge scenes.
Mr Dark Corners. Scenes of the Monster Flying was deleted from the movie after it came to America. The producers thought that scenes of the monster flying looked too ridiculous so the scenes of Reptilicus flying were cut.
Love monster movies, but even as a kid, the first time I saw this I knew it was rubbish. When an impressionable young horror fan laughs at this, it's pretty bad. This one and 'The Giant Claw' eventually became two of my favorite comedies. When given lemons, instead of making lemonade, squirt the juice in your eyes so you can't watch this movie. Good review though. Very amusing, Thank you.

Reptilicus was always my favorite, I first saw it on the AMC channel around 1994. Even then I was laughing at the lackluster effects and sets.
To be fair there are only so many sunny warm days in Denmark so monster or no you take a day at the shore.
Fun fact: The news announcer is played by Sandi Toksvig's dad! (I think he was a news reader in real life).

2:47 Yeah, since this one came from a piece of frozen tail, think about how many more would sprout from the bits !
Silly looking monster aside, this isn’t really a bad movie. And in a distinct advantage over japan (and Britain with gorgo) NO KENNY!
I can remember seeing this film at a drivein theater back in the twentieth century.
The effects where Reptilicus eating people look like it was animated by Terry Gilliam.
Gilliam would have done it better.
