Going for a wide gear range makes a lot of sense. To go to 8 speed means switching to a cassette system. Which means a new hub. Which probably means a new wheel along with a new shifter.
Why bother when you can get the same range from a 7 speed?

If I upgraded from my 6 speed freewheel to a 7 speed, what would happen? Could i get away with it? Would the gear alignments be too wrong? Would I have to change the shifter too? Would I need a different chain?
