- Australian guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel played in his family band from the age of six, touring his home country in the early 1960s. He gradually developed a formidable technique in many musical styles, including jazz, rock, and especially, country, where his deft playing is particularly at home. Following his origins, he played electric guitar with several rock bands in stadiums all over Europe. Yearning for something purer and closer to his heart, he has found his greatest success as a solo acoustic guitar artist. Emmanuel's albums have gone gold and platinum, and he is widely revered as a master finger-picker, even collaborating with his hero Chet Atkins on a popular '97 release.

I saw Tommy perform here in St. Louis, MO back in October of 2023. It was a surprise birthday gift that included a meet & greet with 'the master.' THE BEST CONCERT I've ever attended... and I've been to many. As a musician, meeting Tommy Emmanuel in person was a thrill beyond words... just like his performance that evening. It was life-changing and inspirational. Can't wait to see him perform again. 😎🎸👍
One minute I am so inspired listening to this amazing person and musician and the other minute I feel like giving up and throwing my guitar out the window. This is what you can be after 50,0000 hours of playing enjoying every minute of it.
I first heard Tommy play live in the late 1990s at a small club in Sydney called the Basement. I was never the same after that. Have attended a dozen shows since then and have been gobsmacked each and every time. One of the greatest guitarists of all time.
My all time favourite human being. Tommy is so authentic and spiritually solid .
I was seriously fortunate enough to not only experience a whole week of Tommy and Phil playing the Kirra Hotel in 1985, I sat at their table during the gigs (my friends were supporting the act). Tommy and Phil are (were) incredible musos, and people to be around. Two of the funniest guys you will ever meet. Those were the days...
Thank you so much for having Tommy on this podcast. I absolutely loved it. I can also see that you guys (like me) were moved by his beautiful music, his skills fine tuned over a lifetime, his generosity of spirit and his honesty and humility. What a gift he is to the world of music!
Its a joy to hear the master musician Tommy Emmanuel talk about his process when feeling the music, writing and coming to the right idea for a song, and honestly I haven't heard many (really very, very few) who will tell/share about all this difficult, really hard and personal stuff like Tommy does.
We, the ones who enjoy music, who like to enjoy and discover every single minor detail of every song, either we know music or not, want and need more geniuses like Tommy to tell thier stories, their way of doing things.
We are really lucky, we can hear and watch Andres Segovia, David Russell, Sabicas, Paco de Lucia, Yamandu Costa, Ana Vidovic, Wes Montgomery, John Mayer, Billy Strings, Billy Joel, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tommy Emmanuel and many, many others great masters from our houses, at any time of the day.
The man is almost 70. what an inspiring human
The undisputed master of the acoustic guitar!
This was a wonderful interview. Tommy has a special place with us here in Chico, Ca. And great job to the sound engineer, guitar sounded fantastic!
Were you at the Chico concert that he recorded?
Yes, the PBS special. It was pretty amazing. The video director is a friend.
It's on my repeat playlist on RUclips.@@DaveElke
Tommy's music is so powerful it brings out a feeling of inspiration and fulfillment. Beautifully amazing talent. He is one of the lucky ones who found what he was born to do and did it.
Tommy is just such a mesmerizing story teller and exceptional artist! I didn't want to interview to end. He is a true legend.
Look at that guy in the background he's really enjoying Tommy and his music.
Having grown up with the boys, mostly during the heady Sydney years, knowing Phil and all that accompanied those challenging times, I still recall one night at the Trade Union Club. I had been driving the Truck for the Zarsoff Brothers and Kevin Borich, around the same time. That time with Tommy and Phil at the Tree radey, and the band is etched in my brain for life. Now Tommy is not only Australia's greatest guitar talent, more likely the greatest acoustic guitarists in the world. Miss you guys. Blessing for Scarlett 🙏
Pay attention to Tommy's right hand. That's just FLESH on the strings- no nails- and a thumbpick (!) Stunning articulation. And his sound live and unplugged is far different than when he's running live through his AER which brightens his tone and gives it more snap. Unplugged or amped up- just gorgeous tone with merely fingertip callouses. Wow- just WOW . . .
As a devout TE fan, I’ve religiously watched countless interviews with him since 2009… this one is easily my favorite. I’ve never seen such an in-depth analysis and comfort level from Tommy in a sit down. Kudos to all involved in making it happen. That was an incredible watch.
Tommy, your description of 'how to play' Lady Madonna, working and working at the skill to eventually release your mind from that and let it just do the damn thing, is a beautiful manifesto on the process of doing virtually anything. It's how you learn another language, how you learn how to cook, really it's how you learn to live life. Humble yourself to the 'process', and sooner than you think you'll have that process nailed down and you will never have to worry about it again. And then you can play.
Thank you, Sir. What a wonderful lesson.
It’s hard to believe, but I think the master has become even more masterful 👏👏👏👏👏
This is possibly the best TE interview on the internet. Thank you for capturing it.
As a writer myself I feel like I just finished a college course on composing. Absolutely beautiful, poignant, and stunningly inspiring !
Well said Danny. Never a truer word spoken.
I cannot think of a finer musician and genuinely good bloke.

You're a legend! I was just about to do this, but you did it so much better.
What an amazing man! Music maestro, humanist and philosopher. Surely an idol to which we should all aspire!
Hearing him describe his music and playing is such a treat. Thank you Tommy!
Listening to this does something to my brain
It always interesting to listen Tommy`s interview
Thank you, dear teacher!
Thank you so so much Tommy, your raw honesty and articulation of how you process your head and your heart along with your instincts but then out of the depth of your soul comes the wisdom that there is something that must be satisfied. Wow. I am
In the middle of an album and have been struggling of late. This has helped me so much. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
And God bless you!!!
Big person with a big heart❤️, Tommy is the reason I changed my way to play the guitar because he inspire me a lot with each of his songs...
Thank you so much for share this interview, made me feel Tommy closer❤️ Greetings from Spain
I am so proud to have seen him in my home town in the UK many years ago. He has been a musical hero of mine for many years. I eventually emigrated to Australia where he and his late brother Phil played together. I consider Tommy a musical genius and I do not use superlatives comfortably. however, I can with Tommy. Ty Tommy for everything you have given to music.
Tommy is the definition of humble genius. It's interesting to note that this is one of the few Tommy interviewers that doesn't physically respond to Tommy's playing. I recently rewatched the Rick Beato interview with Tommy. Conversely, Rick is laughing, moving, responding.....like most of Tommy's fans. Not saying this guy doesn't appreciate Tommy's magic, but it really stood out for me. Nonetheless, props to him for having Tommy sit down and share his wizardry. Seeing Tommy next month in Northern VA. It's been about five years and I'm way overdue. Cheers!
Sure, the greatest guitar player in the history of guitar
Wow... Thanks for sharing this. I will be seeing him play in Rome in a few weeks for the second time. For 20+ years I dedicated myself to electric guitar playing, idolising players like Slash and Nuno but you move on in life and the acoustic is so much more satisfying.. so I am dedicating myself now to this and Tommy is my #1 by a country mile. A great musician and a great guy.
59:58 love fuelled art, exquisite beauty… Thank you Tommy for your generous heart.
Won't mind meeting him with his next visit to London UK...
Learnt so much from this video !
Gracias Tommy , cada nota que tocan tus manos en la guitarra son las mejores palabras que un oido puede escuchar !!!!
🎉hes awesome
Super insight into just how music and Tommy's magic come together ❤
Makes a lot of sense if you play for decades.
Love his insight into his writing techniques!
Tommy is a genius. An artist without compair. Thank you, Tommy, for bringing to us your uncompairable interpretation of what guitar music can be. Our lives are richer because of you.
The interviewer's reaction at 42:44 says everything about the unbridled genius that fills Tommy. Tommy is the very embodiment of the generosity of music, but as much credit goes to the interviewer for listening and insightfully prompting Tommy to expound further resulting in this master class in composing and arranging for guitar. Easily the richest 1:22:45 with Tommy I've ever heard.
His playing is truly heaven sent
Tommy you're always a joy to my soul. Thank you.
Wow, what a great interview and thank you Mr. TE ... you said some things that helped me understand myself with my guitar study/playing/ ... and bewildering times. Some aspects I would shun not understanding these are the good spirit helpers. Maybe I won't forget but better need to remember, recall and ... I guess put it down on ... track. Thanks again for the inspiring comments about playing (I will call it writing too...) be good and I hope you T are able to read this in your busy good service to others.
I'm listening Tommy for about 15 years now, I've seen him live in February this year (2023), and through all that time, I don't think I've ever heard him do a hearable mistake, but in this video I've heard one! At a minute 28:27. Finally! He is human! But he is The Greatest of all time anyway 🙂
Tommy will be playing in Australia soon....one of Australia's national treasures and gifts to the world.
Great interviewing skills for letting Tommy express himself with minimal interruption.
Great breakdown
Tommy is the one of the best storyteller guitarist in this world and the video is so inspiring.Thank you guys.
How humans can watch this and not feel compelled to react is beyond me......
Glorious dialog, was thrilled to hear what's going on behind Tommy's masterpieces.
He is awesome! Definitely Genius!❤
Wonderful interview, Leo. So interesting. Thanks.
It is so inspiring to hear him play and explain how important it is to focus on the musical nuances in order to make the guitar sing. I am completely amazed at how aware he is of this, especially in the context of the times we live in, where most guitarists have immense technical abilities but produce very little music. Many should embrace this philosophy, as I believe it will make the guitar a more popular instrument, not only among other guitarists but also among the general public. 🙂
55:55 min {ending song... silence} "I like it when it speed up a little bit at the end"... And then comes for me "my (guitar) inspirator" of what music is all about: love! Thanks for posting this interview.
SO DEEP andSO RIGHT. In depth look at a musicians CREATIVITY
I think Tommy really loves to elaborate on more of the intricate sides music. Most just want him to play and I GET IT!!! But this is such great info to hear how he brings his music together. 👍👍👍
"Practice sets you free...." Pure Gold right there......
Amazing guitarist
The insights here are so good!
Great. A detailed deconstruction of what and how he does it. Just wonderful
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!
So great to hear. Thanks to all involved.
I have one thing to say. Since the first time I heard Tommy, about ten years ago, I knew he was Anointed with the ability to Entertain like nobody else, Amen ! If I were to say anything else, it would be, where have I been all these years that I didn't know Tommy Emanuel or someone like David Phelps.
TOMMY是天才,一般人很難懂。
主持人很有水準,才可以問的這麼深刻👍
太棒了🥹
Helluva master class!
Great interview the man's a true legend
Oh my goodness, when Tommy plays the beegees song it's like listening to Bach. Who needs a backing? Perfect work Tommy
It took Tommy to get me to listen to an 80's pop song lol. I don't remember them being awesome arrangments of world class guitar playing though.........zzzzZING
Accomplice One is a beautiful album. And beautifully mastered/recorded. Thanks for the music, Tommy!
can't find it on Apple Music, is that the precise album's title? tnx
THANKS. It's so interesting to see the way A Genius.artist..guitarist.( im sure that should be one word)such as Tommy,to share his stories.Of course his words are played instead of voice, guitar.Live to hear what inspired him and sparkles us with em any chance he gets and I listen again any time I can.!
Tommy is awesome
Tommy Emmanuel is not a human being yet his music embodies the spirit of humanity. i understand he worked so hard he achieved super-human skills. but every time you see him play he is performs even stronger and carries more emotion, limitless perfection...
Tommy is the best and a wonderful human being.
Tommy is the epitome of expressiveness!
Just excellent.
Tommy's take on that first song! Wow! Intense!
I've seen a heap of "top guitarists" in my time but NONE of them are worthy of carrying Tommys guitar on stage for him. He is just simply the BEST.
Simplesmente EXTRAORDINÁRIO e MAGNÍFICO. Obrigado pela partilha.
Worlds best accoustic player
Stevie Ray Vaugh's song Lenny was an ultimate love song
I'm gonna post this, thanks.
Wow, I’ve never heard someone else explain how I feel about songwriting like that. With anything I write there is a setting that pops in my head and I have to write with that or else it’s gone. Also he’s right about us being different from day to day, some days everything clicks when I play and sing and some days it’s like, “Nope!” Lol 😂
Tommy... he is a true influencer. Thanks Tommy
I am so mad I missed this. I had no idea tommy was in town
跪了!太感動。
Its criminal to allow adverts to start running after Tommy Emmanuel has started playing. Please limit adverts to the beginning and end of your videos if you are going to have this man on.
Thanks for this, VMFA. Thanks, Tommy! I took Joe Robinson’s “Double Stop Challenge” this month. I’m learning double stops, although haven’t been forthcoming with a good melody yet. Your “Mona Lisa” explanation was a master class here. I’ll keep working on it. 👍😊
The song in Bm it's like 'the Sun is rising' of Alisa...cool..thank you, our dear maestro✊✊✊
Imagine being TE's manager and trying to tell him his stage presence was wrong. I hope they got the sack quick-smart
Too. Damn. Good. For. His. Own. Good.
1:01:12 How deep is your love
1:06:16 Mona lisa
超好聽的!
Imagine this guy is in your survivor group during the apocalypse
When he started playing Lady Madonna slow it was like listening to Bill Frisell
I talk about this sort of thing in a live stream I posted today on Facebook on the timeline I use called Jos Tristan, but I don't appear in searches, I'm bamboozled.
This is what it looks like when you’ve played a guitar your whole entire life
That's what it looks like when one grows as a musician their entire life
💗🌟🙏
Its true 💝🎶🙏🍀🎶
The last song isn't Classical gas...but Glasscal cas ;) Great stuff..
Thanks Leo for this great interview with a fine guitarist! Job well done. Out of curiosity, what’s that acoustic guitar on the top left? Thanks!
Why have the mic on the right of the host when his guest is on the left?? It just means he’s never talking into the mic
Oof. Edit. What did he say? 2:09
we have to get the interviewer out of the freezer
