I live in the Florida keys. It can be very arid at times, yet the everglades cherry tomatoes have been volunteer sprouting every years since I planted them years ago. They're the best tomatoe variety because they're the the least genetically modified of any variety. I don't feed or water them, yet they keep me fed with pounds if fruit every year
What a Miracle!!! You have tomatoes coming out your ears! Lol You might consider donating some to a church food bank or something. I think I need to find those seeds. Thanks for sharing!!! 💗
Yes I do! I also have a bunch of other bigger varieties so I definitely have an abundance. I do give a lot of the surplus away and my family and neighbors know they can come and help themselves too. 😊
I was pulling weeds today ( JULY 20th 2023) and found a huge everglade tomato plant spreading. I didnt even know what it was. My wife loves tomatoes so I dug it up and brought it home.
I need to plant some along our back fence. I love cherry tomatoes. Do you remember the girl in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that turned into a giant blueberry? My husband says one day thats going to happen to me, only I'm going to turn into a giant tomato! LOL 😆
Lol 😆. Yes me too. I’m obsessed with tomatoes. My kitchen counters are covered with them right now because I always have to try so many different varieties!
I am in zone 10b and have never been about to plant and have Everglades tomatoes survive or come back. What is the best month to plant them in zone 10b
This looks so great! Do you have recommendations for where to find everglades tomato plants? I have one in a container, and would like to plant more. Thank you for the cool and informative videos.
Thanks! I don’t know about where to get plants. Maybe I need to start selling them lol. You can get seeds from here: www.echobooks.net/wild-tomato-everglades.html
If you have one, next year, you can, if you let it, have more than you could ever want. They really do grow just like that. However, be careful what you wish for. They can become more than you can handle if you let them. They germinate easily, one small tomato can have dozens of seeds, each one a little monster in the making. Usually two are about all I ever plant at once, and they grow in one of my elevated raised beds so I can see when they try to get away. And, if any fall out, they fall on the concrete.
Great! No, they shouldn’t need cold stratification. Yes, they should be in full sun or mostly full sun. If they are in partial shade they may be ok because they can sprawl out and grow towards the sun, but full sun is ideal.
How many plants did you originally plant and how long ago were they planted? Can they be trimmed back so they do t take over? I can’t find Everglades tomatoes or seeds anywhere in my area west central FL.
I originally planted two plants the previous year and those plants eventually died, but they had spread out and left seeds around the area where they were planted and new tomato plants sprouted up in some of the places that tomatoes had fallen. I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t trim them to keep them under control. Next year I think I will try to grow them on a trellis. I keep thinking I should start an Etsy store to sell seeds and cuttings, but I haven’t been able to get to it yet. I see someone mentioned David the Good sells them and that’s probably a good source. Or else I would suggest getting them from ECHO farm here: www.echobooks.net/wild-tomato-everglades.html
That is really interesting because I have grown isis candy tomatoes a couple of times and they didn’t do well for me. In fact, I have grown a lot of varieties of cherry tomatoes and isis candy were among the worst in terms of plant hardiness. Do you know what company you bought your seeds from? I wonder if the difference was in the seed source? As for the Everglades, I have a theory that the self seeded ones maybe do better than the ones we plant on purpose? Several of the other comments made me wonder about this. The original mother plants that this one came from were nowhere near as large or vigorous so it seems like the second generation might be better adapted.
this is hilarious, they are so easy to grow there that they are like a weed in your garden. In my climate i have to germinate them in a heated machine, keep them on a window sill for weeks, then put them in a glasshouse in the day and take them in every night for weeks again, then wait for frost to pass and plant them in the glasshouse. At that stage they are starting to open their first flowers
Lol. Sorry to rub it in 😆. Don’t feel too bad though. Most big slicing tomatoes and beefsteak types are a lot harder to grow here. We can do it, but we have to time it just right and plant in a pretty short window between when the last frost happens and before the summer rains and 90 degree weather arrives. Only cherry tomatoes grow easily, and they are not the ones I prefer.
That’s sad 😞. How long were they growing before they died? Mine don’t live forever, but they usually self seed and new plants grow in various places around the yard.
Yeah that’s understandable. These are not my favorite type of tomatoes to eat, but since the other types are on their way out for the summer, I’m happy to have these.

Awesome!!! 😊💜
Not only do they grow well but are one of the best tasting cherry tomatoes. I am growing mine in a greenstalk planter.

Wow! Yours look great, mine not so well this year
Sorry yours are struggling this year. Maybe you’ll get some volunteers next season that will be stronger and more acclimated to your yard. Good luck!
WOW!!!
Hello friend
Oddly enough I've never had luck with those. Maybe i should just throw them around and then neglect them 😂
Yes, you probably should! 😆

Do you sell seed?
I grew a few plants this year but they didn't do so well for me at all. The Isis Cherry plants lasted longer.

Where do you buy seeds
ECHO Farm. Here is the link: www.echobooks.net/wild-tomato-everglades.html
I was sold some seeds that were worthless. Would you sell me some tomatoes? I'll seed them myself. I'm in North Polk.
They have the plant at Peterson nursery

The same every year gets 3 or 4 feet lots if tomatoes then looks like sunscald.. I have regular to notes in same area they are fine
I had to chop mine down. Got so tired of harvesting them. And my friends don't want any more. I can only can so many.
