  • We changed the door panels on our VW bus. Pretty simple and straight forward job but maybe this video will give you some ideas on how to upgrade your bus door panels. Let us know what you think of how they turned out and we would like to hear the ideas you have for your door panels.

    I really like the carpet on the ceiling and the rear hatch.

      Thank you. It not only looks great but it helps with sound dampening and makes the bus more cozy.

    They do look good but I think I would, maybe will, use the GoWesty panels to avoid the time. Love the idea of using the carpet.
    I haven’t named my bus though I do feel like it’s like a member of the family. I’ve thought about it but nothing seems to fit so far.

    I think it would look cleaner if you put the abs on the door first then glue on the carpet. To hind the clips if possible.

    Great job! My SO and I are getting ready to replace our door panels, so this was a good vid to reference. Happy to see another SD couple restoring an old vanagon 😊

      Glad this helped! That was exactly the intention of the video. If you see us rolling around SD give us a beep and a wave!

      My pleasure. Good luck! It is not a hard repair and very fun to do to spruce up your doors.

    Very good guys. I had to replace the sliding door mechanism (The roller and nylon latch part, at the rear of the door). I bought a interior black padded door panel and the holes don't line up very well. Looks like I'll get some of the same type of fasteners that you guys used. Happy trails!

    Nice job. I wish I had seen this before I recovered mine. For mine, I ripped off the old vinyl, from the old masonite panels and repaired them. After that I used new vinyl to re-cover them.. It was a pretty annoying job but it came out nice. I can definitely see how the carpet would reduce noise.

      hahaha That is why i made the video I had not seen anyone else do it yet. and yes, the carpet reduces noise a lot!

    Good video guys|
    FYI on the clips - you are supposed to jam them in! The screw head if for removal - in just "pushes" so you don't strip the head!

    Different materials seem to be a lot easier for you to get in the States. I'm in the process of replacing all my carpet with a 4 way stretch. I've also thought about doing the door cards, but I have to agree with you, the clips all look naff. I think maybe brass self tappers might look better!?!? I'll let you know 🥴

      Please do. I want to see how yours come out with the brass self tapper. Very good idea.

    Cleaner look would have been installing the body clips in the panel and installing the fabric over them. Also you can buy abs plastic panels with all the holes pre set up. Go Westy has them FYI

    You showed us where to buy the abs sheet and the clips but not the carpet. What was the total cost per door?

  • @salamalycoom
    @salamalycoom 2 года назад

    I used the same door clips and they do suck, so I replaced the plastic screws with metal one's works fine and reusable.

      Where can I get the door clips and what kind of screws did you use?

    • @salamalycoom
      @salamalycoom Год назад

      @@brigitteebert6102 Ebay. 8mm scrivet clips. The insert is OK but I used metal screw from the hardware store that are the same size. I suspect if you do a search you could find a better quality version.

    Great Job! I need to do the back lift door panel as 1989 Camper Van's blew up (cracked in many places and the holes for the clips broke out). Was the ABS too thin and would you go thicker or did you find that the clips would not hold with the carpet and a heavier ABS? I used the clip fasteners before and mine looked like yours, except mine pushed in and expanded to hold. Then, the screw feature was used to remove and back out the center pin so you don't have to use an upholstery tool. If you want a different clip, there are many different ones out there, even nylon anchors in the door holes and black metal screws with a washer to hold your panel. Thanks for doing this video. I am in SD too! See you around!

      The ABS fit JUST right! I can now totally recommend the thinner sheet I posted on the video, and they are local to SD. You can go in and they will cut a piece to size for you. eplastics.com is a great resource. I am pretty sure the clips would have worked just fine on a thicker piece including the carpet but I can not be 100% sure as we only used the thinnest. Thank you for the heads up on the different clips. I will definitely look into those for if we have to take off the old ones. These ones we used are ok but... I prefer a sturdier metal one. Thanks again for the kind comment on the video, I was hoping it would help other people out with their decision. If you see us around town give us a BEEP!
