When I am packing I first start with all the towels, table clothes, placemats, everything cloth I use in my house to buffer between dishes… I know they are all clean and they definitely save my dishes and cut down and one use paper and plastic and everything gets washed post move 😊
There are so many changes when you move in they can understand that something's happening but they don't understand why so that's just their trepidation they're fear coming out you're doing the right thing by talking to him and calming him.

We took our cat on the train to our new home and she loved it! people made a fuss of her and on our connecting train, another cat was making a journey. We put their carry cases together and they just chilled for an hour. She loves our new home with a small garden and now has two cat friends. She seemed lonely in our last place so its lovely for her now.

Did you buy the moving crates? Or were those provided by the moving company as part of the service? In the US, we use cardboard boxes to move, so either obtained by purchasing or dumpster diving for recycled boxes.
