I always watch your bass clips and are amazed by your knowledge, feel and groove, Mills can be difficult, you played this better than most ever will . @@TJH3113
Mike Mills is my favorite R.E.M. member...his voice...can't put it in words exactly but totally fit this southern, alternative-folk thing R.E.M. had going on...and his bass playing is underrated. And great job on this too!
Mike Mills always seems to add stunning melodic and technical bass lines when you least expect them in songs and when they hit it's awesome. Being a big fan of REM throughout their musical adventure, hearing him rattle out some absolute bangers is just great. To hear it here is just as good, you did the song justice, with that end jam being the icing on the cake.
hey its my bass! i bought this bass from this guy on reverb! cant believe i found this on youtube! he had this posted with the listing. such a beautiful bass. i love it.
Very good bass cover. As you can tell from my display picture, I like Mike Mills, and especially his bass technique, quite a lot. This is a very good bass cover, I like your bass tone and the fact that you played it "fingerstyle." Interesting Peavey bass, it looks super neat.
I've never been much of a REM fan myself either Troy..............but I DO LIKE a few of there earlier 80's songs very much!!! This one ranks pretty high on that list too!!! GREAT Cover My Friend!!! LOVE the "demo" after the song!!! :)
Great playing Troy!!! Always spot on and the peavy sounds good 👌. Like the end with you adjusting the tone . Thanks so much for the posting. ✌🏻my bass brother
Very cool as usual. Hey I’d love to see you do a cover of Rolling Stones “Sympathy For The Devil”. There’s a few out there but seems like you’re one of the few people that actually knows how to record a bass cover so that the bass can actually be heard.
Thanks. I saw that when I was looking for how he played the chorus which is something I rarely ever do. I'm hearing something different from what his hand position is saying, that's why I split the baby.
@@TJH3113 yeah you're definitely not playing it the way it was performed in Letterman, but I think you got the studio version right. The Letterman performance predated their second album, so they hadn't recorded this yet, and Mills must have changed it in the meantime.
Troy, your playing is superb.... I like the fact that you recognize bass excellence and emulate this in your videos. Driver 8 ????..... Lots going on there, no?
I love playing REM tunes. Mills, and drummer Bill Berry, always play to serve the song. As is usual, you've done a great job on this. PS. I'm a vintage Peavey fan... Almost collector (too short of funds to get the basses that would complete my collection). I have the single pup first gen Fury, which is really a hybrid of the T-20 / T-45 line. Instead of the the T-40 dual coil pup, it has the Super Ferrite you'd find in a DynaBass or Patriot. It too is warmer and bold on the low end. Unlike my Fury, my DynaBass has a 3 band EQ, and I can get closer to that Rik sound on that one. But that Fury has become my favorite bass. It's an ash body, and the wood SINGS! It's the only bass I own that I can play without an amp and you can hear the notes almost as if it was an acoustic. It's become my favorite to play.
Thank you. It's amazing how many older Peavey instruments are available, in great shape and for very reasonable prices. I was looking at a single p/u Patriot not too long ago. Congrats on your collection.
Mike Mills could really thump on a bass guitar, he had a real knack for putting it where it belonged rhythmically. He had a feel for the pocket that was almost unteachable it was so good, but please don't say that his sonorous and airy voice was ever any better than Stipe's because the world never would have known about Mills if there had not been a Stipe fronting REM's awesome rhythm section.
Arrangement is everything. Whatever stuff you play on bas has to make sense in bigger picture. Otherwise it is not working. P.S. thanks for the Peavey T45 demo, the best on RUclips so far.
Yes, I watched again 😎. I know you're not much of a fan of R.E.M. But don't dislike them either lol. Gotta say Mike Mills is very underrated in my opinion. The guy can play a mean bass. And I have a request if you feel up to it. R.E.M., What's The Frequency Kenneth ✌
@@TJH3113 yeah, my favorite REM era is the early stuff on the IRS label. Mills' playing is really active, and you can tell that he was influenced by a lot of the new wave / post punk players like Graham Maby. However, it's really hard to beat What's the Frequency. I'd love to see you tackle that one (or any REM, really).
Great Cover Troy...I was wondering if you would think about playing..."Cirice" by Ghost...You might have heard them play that when you went to see them recently.
I checked out the song and loved it (their official video) and recognized it from the show. I checked my phone and saw that I'd taken a short slip of it. I guess I really liked it. We enjoyed the show so much that we're going to see them again in December at the Barclay in Brooklyn. I can't believe I'm actually going to Brooklyn.
Nice bass. I get what you mean on plug and play. I mostly like 2 pickups, but either rely on one or the other or both. I love my thumb bass. I keep both pickups blended together because it sounds like one special pickup. I never bother with the preamp and just use the volume knob.
This is a good choice, and a nice job on this song. I much prefer REMs older stuff... BTW - Blue Oyster Cult's 'Reaper' came on the radio yesterday and I said hmmmm . this seems like something Troy would do... just a suggestion, especially given your preference for 70s songs lately.
Graet basses. Revently got one, 1982. A word for all out there, who are about to purchase one. Chances are they have a broken thus rod + it is difficult to reach. It can be cured but just keep in mind.
They are, but I didn't really bond with the T-45. I tend to prefer single p/u basses and, because I love the T-40's, I thought I'd love this bass, but I did not. I've found that with every Peavy "T" series bass I've had, I've had to take a different approach to accessing the truss rod.
No, this was one of the few that I sold off. I just had a hard time getting a sound that I liked out of it. I thought I'd love it, since I really like the T-40's and I favor single p/u basses.
Just. Recently got into reading about Peavy basses... Theres a model called G bass by Peavy.. Seems like an alternative to and aria sb.. Have you seen it?
Sorry for the dumb question, but does “broad and warm” mean the quintessential “fat sound” vs your preferred “clear and focused” - Like when they say “ that is a fat bass” ?
I feel similarly to REM as you. Good but cant say I'm a huge fan. Have always liked the bass work too, he has some great lines. Plus anyone who appreciates John McVies work and can serve a song like he does is good in my book! You did great as always. I was digging the tones during and after the video, it's a beautiful bass. You for sure selling it or are you on the fence?
I always liked R.E.M. and Mike Mills' bass lines, but man, he seldom played with THAT much control and finesse. I thought the Peavey sounded pretty focused, though I don't know how you set the SamsAmp to get this. You also like to have that controlled fret buzz that also brings out treble. If only that pickup would be right at the bridge...
I don't know about that. I think the bass sound a bit Precision-ish, but I'm pushing it to it's limits to get it to sound the way I'd like to hear it, if you know what I mean. A lot of people think that I use distortion but, I believe, it's really the fret buzz they are hearing. Hmm...I could get a pick guard and have the pick-up moved back a touch.
That's a good idea. I bet you would enjoy playing it much more if it were placed right next to the bridge, not unlike on a Wal, except the Peavey's bridge is extremely long, so it would be closer to the Stingray placement. Do you like the sound of the T-40 with only the bridge pickup on?
I also think it sounds like a P bass. ANd I dislike pickups too close to the bridge, too nasal sounding. It's one of the things I like about Rickenbackers: the bridge pickup is fairly far from the bridge compared to a Jazz.
Actually, I do not like the sound of either T40 p/u on its own. I really think the sweet spot is where the Guild bridge p/u is placed. Which, coincidentally, is only 1/4" off from where the Ric bridge p/u is located.
I'm way late seeing this video . Have to disagree with this bass' ability to cut thru the mix though. It sounds great, and you kept playing after the song was over. That's proof! I'd buy the crap out of that bass.
I managed to get it to cut through but I really had to go to extremes with the eq. This isn't really the bass' natural voice, it took some arm twisting.
it's correct but you have a bad groove
Thank you, Marco. I'll try to work on that.

Brian you're right about Mills being 'underappreciated,' but anyone who knows a great player will say he is awesome.
IMO. The bass always made the song.
Man, Mills bass melodies made many of the early R.E.M. songs. Buck was great but his guitar needed the bass melody.
I have seen a few bass tutorials on this but I gotta say, your timing and technique are first class.
Thanks, I'm glad you think so!
Wow, beautiful. 2024 sadly just discovering this great music.

The last two minutes aren't in the version of the song that I know and love. I must have the radio edit?
Many hardcore R.E.M. fans say that it was the best part of the song. Supposedly, it inspired Michael Stipe to shave his head.
Interesting factoids.
