  • Not all power supplies are created equal.
Chargers/PSUs/powerbricks aren't the most exciting of topics but it's a common purchase there's better chargers than the ones Apple ships with its laptop. The UGREEN Nexode is a three port charger, that advertises the ability to power two laptops, but what about three?
Using a Kill-A-Watt charger, I put the Nexode to the test. Spoiler, it works well with a few minor caveats.
The Ugreen has 3 ports, two USBc and one USB-A. The bottom port has a max output of 140w and the middle USBc port has a max of 100w. Ugreen advertises it has automatic adjust power dispensing has thermal guard to prevent it from overheating. It also comes with a 240w compatible USBc cable that's rated for USB2.0 speeds.

Great review. Lot of reviewers waste so much time in what it could be covered in 2 minutes max in terms of if it delivers what it advertises and etc, but the fact you took it to the paces to see how it handles it and tested if it got too warm or not (since that's my biggest concern reading some reviews online). Great job.

7 Months and it's still going strong, no changes. Seems like it's here for the long haul. - Greg
Update 10/6/23: I’ve taken this to Europe and subjected to to 240V and it’s still alive and kicking
Update: 03/14/24 It's been roughly a year and still around, it's become my daily charger for home now as I have a second 140w charger for travel by AOHI Gan which is a bit smaller which is also worth a look. Both have dropped to about $80, which makes these a much better buy. There's a lot of no-name GaN chargers for cheaper now although I'd prefer to plug in my $3k laptop into a brand I've heard of.

I bought one semi recently. It basically basically outputs the power you would expect at the various usb PD modes, like 20V @ 3.0A to get 60w~. Sure you could test the claims about power negotiation and variable power delivery, but also becomes a function of the device and the cable too.
I don’t know if I’ll be making any more power supply centric videos in the future seen as how little response this got and it’s…. Kinda boring :)

The 22W is only with devices that specifically support it - Apple being one of the biggest standouts for *not* supporting >10W charging on their iPhones
Most Android phones will pull >10W from USB-A

I have a lenovo legion 5 laptop. There is orginal lenovo product in the market that gaN charger and supplies 135w.
but I think about buying this 140w ugreen instead of it.
do you think I can charge my laptop only using one port and get 140w? because lenovo's charger has only one usb-c port but ugreen has more ports and looks more useful.

    • @dmug

That’s something that’s defined by the laptop as it negotiates the power delivery. Not familiar with that particular laptop off hand.

@@ПётрМошкович I'm using and ugreen one is charging in same rate that about 40-43w as the normal 230w brick.. But for the Rapid charge Ugreen is charging about 70-80w while 230w brick is charging about 120w or above but that's actually not a problem for me because still full charge is about 50 minutes with rapid charge and it takes about 1 hour or above a little with normal charge for Ugreen and I can say it's gives results near to default 230w brick charger..
but you can't play games with this charger and also there is a yellow emblem on the battery sign that says you charging with slow charger but don't care about it.
this charger has 140w charging capacity but lenovo legion 5 supports until the 100w charging with type C for non-Legion chargers and that's why you can't rapid charge with 140w but even 70-100w are enough for rapid charge and also there is more port on the ugreen charger and you can charge your phone with leftover 40W while charging your laptop with 100w..

Great product that is way too expensive. Good for those who really needs the space-saving. For lazy me that doesn't travel with 3 laptops (or rather, hardly travels at all) I'll just buy 3 of 60W PDs for less money combined.🤣

    • @dmug

Fair enough, I don’t want to carry multiple bulky power bricks when I go places and it’s so much easier to find one free outlet vs 3 or 4. When I travel I usually have 1-2 laptops but the extra ports are more for battery pack/phone/apple watch.

With the 2023 Mac Pro being such a disappointment, I’m starting to migrate over to non-apple computers. I really like the framework laptops and I’m sure it’ll be my next and hopefully last machine. To prepare for the said laptop, I got this exact charger today, only to realize that you had a review of the product. I guess it means I made the right choice.
As for the USB A port being advertised as 22W, I believe it’s 22W for QC devices, which doesn’t include apple products. In those cases, apple products charge at 12W, which is what you got in your video.

    • @dmug

It doesn't draw a full 140w. When doing stress tests, it never drew a full 140w, normal operation for an M1 Max (its more power sucking than the 16 inch) is about 55w and full load is only topped out at about 110w, whereas the M1 Pro was around 100w in my tests
Here's another site. Apple silicon is just really power efficient.
